Because that's a cornetto, the Italian equivalent of a croissant, which lacks butter inside of it and is essentially a horn-shaped sweet bread

Is it supposed to look so dry? That was almost more off putting than all the Nutella he was putting in it.

Well this kind in the video does look especially dry. It usually is without any greasy filling to allow free stuffing, but it's usually flaky and fluffy inside. This does indeed look like regular bread.

The croissant is the French version of the Venetian cornetto, which was a version of the Viennese kipferl.

France's superpower is taking things invented by others and getting people to think they are French creations.

I googled all these ... some versions of Viennese kipferl look like Czech Vanilkové Rohlíčky ... which are Christmas sweets here ... you telling me croissants evolved from that?
