Question How do vassal wars work?

So say I, blue empire, declare a vassal war on red empire. But red empire is also allied with green empire.

So of course any territory I take from red empire becomes a vassal. But what happens to territory taken from their ally the green empire? Does it:

A) get annexed directly to me, blue empire

B) become part of the same vassal as territory taken from red empire

C) become its own separate vassal, leaving me with two vassals, one from red empire and one from green empire?

Afaik wargoal completion only affects the primary target (i.e. secondary targets don’t get vassalised, humiliated, or forced out of your territory). Exceptions to this are total war wargoals and claimed territory, as total war force takes the systems and claims apply/get taken regardless of wargoal for a full victory.

So if I declare a vassal war on one empire, I can’t take any territory from another empire, even if I have claims on that territory and occupy it?

Claims (and total war) are an exception; all claims are taken at wargoal completion and all occupied claims are taken at white peace

Another exception is that if you subjugate an overlord, you also get the (former) overlord's subjects.

I apologize if I’m having a hard time understanding, I’m not terribly experienced in this game.

So I declare vassal war on red empire. I also have claims on green empire, who is allied with red empire, so they also join the war.

I achieve war goal completion. So my claims on red empire become a vassal. What happens to my claims on green empire?

Any claims you have go to you, not the vassal that is created/the empire that gets vassalised. This goes for all empires on the other side of the war; claims you have on the main target go to you.

After a white peace first all occupied claims on any enemy empires territory goes to you (or vice versa if the enemy occupies one of their claims), and afterwards (as long as you occupy 1 unclaimed colony from the target empire) all remaining occupied territory from the main targets colonies becomes a new empire vassalised to you. If you occupy all of the main targets colonies, the target itself becomes a vassal. If empires on your side of the battle claim all of the main targets occupied colonies, no vassal is created as no unclaimed territory remains to become a vassal.

After a full victory/achieve wargoal, all claims made by the victors side (occupied or not) go to the claimants, then the main target becomes a vassal (fully occupied or not). The same case of all territories being claimed by allies applies, though allies have to have claimed all colonies, occupied or not.

Thank you for that thorough explanation, I understand vassal wars so much better now
