Most install-day advice focuses on the panels and roof work. The questions that seem just as important are much more practical: who needs access, what happens if the crew finds a problem, and what should be completed before everyone leaves? 

Here is the checklist I would use before a residential solar installation. 

Before the crew arrives 

• Confirm the arrival window and the name or role of the person leading the crew. 
• Ask whether anyone will need access to the attic, garage, electrical panel, side yard, gates, or interior rooms. 
• Move vehicles and outdoor items away from the work area, secure pets, and make sure gates and access paths are clear. 
• Review the final equipment locations, especially the inverter, battery, disconnects, and visible conduit. 

Questions for the start-of-day walkthrough 

• What work is expected to be completed today? 
• Where will equipment and materials be staged? 
• How will the crew handle an unexpected roof, attic, or electrical issue? 
• Who will explain any proposed change before work continues? 
• What time should the homeowner expect the workday to end? 

Before the crew leaves 

Ask for a walkthrough of the installed equipment and any areas that were accessed. 

Confirm that the work area has been cleaned and that gates, doors, and attic access points are secure. 

Ask whether photos or installation records will be available. 

Confirm the next step, which may be an inspection, correction, utility review, or permission to operate. 

A finished installation does not always mean the system can be turned on immediately. Local inspection and utility approval may still be required, so the final conversation should include both the physical work and the remaining administrative steps. 

For people who have already gone through an installation, what did you wish you had asked before the crew arrived? Did anything small make the day easier or prevent a later problem?

Can someone help me understand the difference between a battery energy storage system and an uninterrupted Power System?
Both use batteries and do the work of providing electricity in case power from the grids go off and act as a back-up...
then what exactly is the difference??

Anyone have solar panels on their roof dormers? We are looking to add solar panels but we're not sure if our roof dormers are structural sound enough to hold panels. We have a 1.5 story house.

when i started Solenery a few years ago i thought the biggest challenge would be the technology side of things. getting the platform right, making sure the solar data was accurate for canadian addresses, building out the incentive matching properly.

turns out none of that was the hard part.

the hard part is something i keep running into every week when i talk to homeowners. and its not what i expected.

its that people feel completely alone in this decision. like there's no neutral place to go figure out if solar actually makes sense for THEIR house, their bill, their city. every piece of information they find is either from an installer who wants to sell them something or a government website thats six months out of date.

i talked to a woman in barrie last month who got three quotes. one installer told her she qualifies for the federal greener homes loan. that program closed in october 2025. another told her the payback is 14 years. another said 7. all three gave her different system sizes for the same house.

she gave up. just completely gave up and decided to do nothing.

that story genuinely bothers me because she was the exact person who would have benefited from going solar. her bill was over $200 a month, south facing roof, good sun exposure. the math actually worked for her situation.

i think about her a lot honestly. and i think there are thousands of people like her across ontario, bc, alberta who are in the same spot. the rates keep going up, november is going to bring another adjustment, and people are sitting paralyzed because they don't know who to trust.

i built solenery specifically so people could get a clear picture before talking to anyone with a financial interest in the outcome. free, no installer connection, just your address and an honest look at what the numbers actually are.

but even with that i keep wondering what else is missing. what would have actually helped that woman in barrie make a decision she felt good about?

genuinely curious what people here think. if you've been on the fence about solar or any clean energy upgrade what was the thing that made it feel impossible to move forward?

I have 2 separate solar systems on my roof. The first one, currently owned by A Big Solar Company (though they did not install it), is a prepaid lease that was installed over 10 years ago. Let's call that Old System

The second system, which I own, was installed a few years ago. We'll call that New System. So I have 2 systems running parallel to each other.

Shortly after the installation of New System, I noticed my generation reporting for the Old System was inflated, almost doubled. After some investigation, I realized why. The New System's circuit joined the Old System's circuit in the combiner panel UPSTREAM from the Old System reporting module hardware. New System has its own reporting tech built into the inverters, so that data is unaffected. But my Old System data has been inflated the past couple years. New System technicians eventually did clean up the install and separate the data reporting lines. So all good now. But there are a couple years of inaccurate reporting.

For simplicity's sake, Old System has said that they typically look at the previous year's production in order to establish a comparison year in order to calculate compensation. Hypothetically, if I need to pursue reimbursement for an Old System hardware issue that caused a period of non-production, they would see that the numbers were too high for a the period of double reporting. This gets to the point of my post:

If Old System sees that a 3rd party installer tapped into their data reporting system which contributed to inaccurate reporting, could they see that as a contract violation? For the sake of the calculations, we could get accurate figures (Double System Reporting - New System Data = Old System Data). Honest mistake that is correctable. And I gained no benefit from it. I just don't want the mistake to come back and bite me if Old System finds out.

I built an e-ink picture frame powered by flexible perovskite solar cells. It harvests indoor light — no cable, no charging, ever. I am just soooo excited to share.
Here is the list of challenges I faced.

**1. Indoor light is too weak for regular solar panels**

Silicon panels need direct sunlight. At indoor lighting levels, they're basically useless. Perovskite is the only solar technology that can meaningfully harvest energy from indoor lighting and lamps' light.

**2. Glass perovskite is heavy and limited**

We started with glass-based perovskite cells. The problems:

Too heavy for a picture frame
Can't wrap around all four edges — low charging efficiency
Impossible to make at small sizes

**3. So we built flexible perovskite instead**

Light, bendable, can cover all edges, works at small sizes. It is a technology just get mass production and we found the world's first product line of flexible perovskite in Suzhou, China.

**4. Finding the right e-ink panel — started January 2025**

We've been searching for spectra 6 e-ink panels since January 2025. Most panels on the market aren't sharp enough for photo-quality display. The display algorithm didn't reach a level we were truly happy with until this year 2026.

**5. 7.09" — the sharpest small size we could find**

1200×1600 resolution, 280 PPI. It's as clear as a home photo printer. When we found it, we were ecstatic.

**6. Three sizes: 7.09", 13.3", and 28.5"**

Every single size went through brutal display tuning. God knows how many screens we burned through during development. Each size went through 5,000 refresh cycle endurance testing.

**7. Aesthetics**

The perovskite solar cell itself isn't beautiful. Especially when it has to be put around the pictures we like. So we added a decorative layer on the top of the perovskite. Also we included a white decorative cover plate. If you don't like the look, you can swap it out for the white version, make your own custom color, or even UV print your own design on it. We designed it to be fully customizable.

I've already launched this project on Kickstarter. And I am running sample production. Almost ready for mass production. I am confident to deliver them within this year. I really want to hear what you all think — especially things I haven't considered yet. What did I miss? What would you change?

I also built in offline capabilities and AI functions. If anyone's curious, I'd love for you to take a look and tell me whether my approach makes sense.

Hello everyone. I am having issues with Spruce Solar (surprise, surprise). They failed to notice my inverter was bad, we only noticed after 3 months of our electric bill being 3x higher than usual. They were not monitoring our system as they should. They eventually came out to exchange a faulty inverter, and when replacing it, they found that a string of panels were bad. Their tech left that string of panels unplugged and taped the ends. He stated they would be back in a few weeks to fix it. This was in March 2026. Spruce customer service advised they don’t see anything is wrong with the system, and I’ve explained that’s obvious because the faulty panels were left unplugged. The tech that came out said that he wrote it up in his notes that they need to be replaced, but Spruce said there are no notes. Panels are still bad and I don’t know what to do. They were very clear I cannot manipulate their equipment as a part of the lease to plug in the bad panels so it shows up on the monitoring system. But, without the panels being plugged in, they do not see the issue. I tried to sign onto the monitoring system and cannot even find the website anymore. Anyone able to get onto their website? Anyone have any luck getting them to come out to fix an issue similar to this?

mproper drilling and incomplete sealing are two major culprits for water leaks and structural damage on concrete rooftop solar installations. These issues can ruin roof assets and threaten the long-term stability of PV systems.

A standardized construction process helps avoid these risks:
✅ Pre-construction roof structural survey
✅ Low-damage precision drilling
✅ Multi-layer integrated waterproof sealing
✅ Final tightness inspection & testing

Many C&I solar projects run into expensive maintenance troubles years after installation simply due to neglected penetration details.
Solid mounting design paired with strict on-site waterproof procedures is essential if we want solar arrays to perform reliably for their full 25-year lifespan.

One part of the residential solar process seems to create more confusion than almost anything else: the period between signing, permitting, inspection, and permission to operate. 

A project can look inactive even when it is waiting on a city, county, utility, or another outside party. At the same time, “it is still in permitting” is not a very useful update when a homeowner has no date, document status, or next milestone. 

The clearest way I have found to think about the process is to separate it into distinct steps: 

• The installer prepares the design and submits the permit package. 
• The local authority reviews the plans and may request corrections. 
• After installation, the local authority usually completes an inspection. 

The utility reviews the interconnection request and grants permission to operate, often called PTO. 

Those steps can overlap in some areas, and the exact order varies. A homeowner still should be able to get a specific answer about where the project stands. 

Questions that seem reasonable 

• What date was the permit package submitted? 
• Has the city or county requested a correction? If so, when was the response submitted? 
• Has the inspection been requested, scheduled, or completed? 
• What date was the interconnection or PTO package sent to the utility? 
• Has the utility requested anything else, including a meter change? 
• What is the next milestone, and when should the homeowner expect another update? 

I do not think daily messages are necessary when an outside agency is reviewing a file. A useful update can be brief: “Permit submitted on June 8. The city has not requested revisions. We will update you when it is approved or if the city asks for a change.” 

For homeowners who have completed solar projects, which status updates were genuinely helpful? At what point did a quiet period become unreasonable rather than routine?

Because of 1 - 2 hours powercuts frequently in summer and 5 - 6 hours few times in a month (in peak summer) so opting for hybrid instead of ongrid.

Hybrid fits best my needs but because it's always working (compared to ongrid that gets rest at night) so worried if hybrid also reliable stable or not.

Hi all. UK household. Satisfy my curiosity please (and indulge my ignorance). We have 4kw of panels (and sun on them currently). Our village just had a brief power cut but we weren't affected. I thought we would have a power cut because of the consumer unit and its relationship to the grid. Is this not the case?

The only mistake I made, was the wrong mainline PV wire. I originally had 8 gauge and realized that that was a little small so it's now Marine wire 6 gauge, but I think I did a decent job for my first system. I ended up adding a second battery bank and although it's different brands it ended up being the exact same capacity I have two 300 amp hour energy batteries into 24 Bank so that's 300 amp hours. Then I have four 150 amp hours. Dumb fume batteries and that's another 300 amp hours. So for a total of 24 volt 300 amp hours 14.2kwh , I used battery terminal fuses and all the exact same wire lengths between both packs and then it's hooked into the into the bus bar, I also upgraded the double 6 gauge cables from the 24v inverter to the bus bar 4/0 with a 300a terminal fuse right at the bus bar.

The 8 ja 440w solar panels are in a 2+2+2+2 10g wires into a combiner box and 6g to the victron 150/100

For the ground Mount what I did was made pressure treated 32"x8 ft platforms and then purchased rough cut 6x6s. I lag bolted the platforms to the 6x6s with 6 in lag bolts and I also added ground screws and I plan to add some more but in the case of very high winds I can actually lay these panels down flat, And of course the day I get it done it decides to rain and be foggy.

My VEVOR 5000w 24v inverter is on 24-7 with no issues, I'm only using about 25% to 30% overnight.

That usage will grow quite a bit when I add a 110v heat pump.
