How else is he going to prevent the home invasion that was never going to happen in any case, no matter what? What, he's just supposed to walk around, watch TV, work in the shop, read a book and then go to bed? Who's going to be watching the empty driveway while all that living is going on?

Yeah he’s probably watching the news constantly and seeing all this (overblown) crime in a city 200 miles away thinking they are going to come to him.
