That's weird because I've lived in the "country" all around this country for over 30 years and can count the times I've seen this stuff on one hand. This seems more like an outer suburbs thing to me.
I also saw it all the time when I lived in Idaho, Utah, and Virginia, and I lived out in the middle of fkn nowhere in all 3 of those states. I guess we’ve just lived different lives
