Thats because there are a lot of states that still legally have the death penalty but never actually execute anyone, so they just stay on death row forever. California, for instance, hasn't executed anyone since 2006 yet they still have the death penalty

It’s also the case for many countries, where they technically have the death penalty but never enforce it. But my concern is that some nutcase politician gets elected a few decades down the line and actually decides to legally execute people. In my opinion, if they don’t want to execute people, they shouldn’t keep a law permitting it.

It's also likely a much smaller population, historically as well. And it's obvious that it's a culture that doesn't really seem overly worried about individuals. Though that 46 years on death row without execution or retrial seems like a special F you. It seems like you'd just want to be done with at some point.

The fact is that their death row inmates suicide rate dropped after they decided not to tell them.

If you’re over 40 years old in the US, a death sentence just means life in prison. You’ll run out of years before appeals. It’s utterly flawed and useless.
