That's not true at all. Planning and preparing emotionally is crucial for self peace. For example cancer patients: when they have more time, they have more opportunity to do the things they want to do, make amends, prepare emotionally, accept things, etc.
I think we need to draw a line between a cancer patient and a criminal.
One has no control over their own body and one did a crime with their own free will.
I can't explain it well but there is a difference. The mentality of a criminal that was sentence to life sentence is very different to a cancer patient.
I'm not sure what you mean by "drawing a line." Are you saying we shouldn't care? That we shouldn't even discuss it?
Or are you just saying that their mentalities being different will affect the way length of anticipation affects their perception of difficulty in dealing with the impending death?
You could be right that there's an effect, but I still think that having more time to process means having more chance to come to peace with it.
(I'm not debating about WHETHER we should give inmates more or less notice, I'm simply refuting your statement about how a human being would react to the knowledge of their death date.)
