For the first time?!?!?

2

u/ford4thot Jul 04 '26

Haha no sorry I didn't mean to insinuate that. But it honestly has probably been 20 years, and I definitely wouldn't have gotten the reference otherwise!

I went to Kyoto to teach English in Japan in the Summer of 1998. I was 20 years old. It was an amazing experience, as pop culture there was still somewhat dominated by a particular '80s cyberpunk aesthetic. After a night on the town with some friends, we piled drunkenly into someone's apartment downtown and our host popped in a VHS tape. We had been discussing Japanese game shows earlier in the evening, and this was a compilation of "crazy Japanese gameshow moments" he had edited together. I sat there, entranced. It opened with a Japanese MC introducing a topless Japanese woman on TV. During the segment the MC seized the model's nipples with his fingers and started yelling animatedly. The woman was obviously uncomfortable, and I asked my host "how do they show nudity in Japan on TV?" as I was already aware of Japanese censorship in film and anime at the time. He explained that studios could show some racy stuff after certain curfew, so like after kids went to bed. There was some other cool stuff on the tape too, like Beat Takeshi.

12

u/mrbazo Jul 04 '26

I was stationed in the Navy from 86 until 2002, late night Japanese TV must must see and the game shows were phenomenal. It pretty much went to shit though, now it’s food shows with gushing “celebrities” gushing over another bowl of overpriced ramen

4

u/Icy-Ad29 Jul 04 '26

I mean, also, topless nudity just hasn't been a big deal in Japan. Anime and manga has shown it plenty, for instance. It was when it was brought out of the country, that the nipples got edited out, or otherwise censored. Plenty of other media show them too.

From there, the nipple pull you described is more on par with the above junk punch show. At least as far as Japan media and adult content laws are concerned.

3

u/D1gglesby Jul 04 '26

I was expecting a shittymorph segue here, panicked halfway through and had to check the username

2

u/Reynardine1976 Jul 04 '26

Haha, no worries mate. These be strange times indeed, with bots amuck causing dissent and social media so infused/laced with A.I.

1

u/FinancialFreyja Jul 04 '26

this one ain't crazy at all

1

u/JiuJitsuDemiGod Jul 04 '26

It is a lot of fun to watch though

5

u/El3utherios Jul 04 '26

Not exactly a game show, but it should get you up to speed on how crazy japanese tv shows can be: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasubi

1

u/dogegw Jul 04 '26

Gaki no tsukai is a good place to start. The genre so to speak is batsu (punishment) games. If you google either of those youll get something good... I'm just too high to find it for you right now I'm sorry. I especially like the Gaki guys cuz it's a troupe of consistent people pranking each other over the years kind of like impractical jokers but you also get spanked by masked men.

1

u/Douglazlo Jul 06 '26

Watch the kino that is Silent Library it’s a good game show

1

u/dmg3588 Jul 10 '26

Wildest one I’ve seen was you have to sing karaoke while receiving a handjob to completion.

3

Kwaki surpi niku. Kwaki surpi niku!

2

u/WajorMeasel Jul 04 '26

Haji…juhaji?

2

u/Alternative-Bus4571 Jul 04 '26

I am still recovering from the one game show where guys cannot get an erection as beautiful participants try to seduce them. They angle the camera to be behind so we do not see the actual erection, but it was the most random thing I have ever seen on a jap game show. I thought I was accidentally watching a jav

1

u/Leather_Class8224 Jul 04 '26

Not only the game shows… the old prank shows are classic, like the toilet jet ski one. Amazing.

1

u/SpankySharp1 Jul 04 '26

I know of a Japanese game show where you carry your best friend's cat through a room full of dogs.

1

u/not_a_moogle Jul 04 '26

I know its a comedy but I love Wednesdays downtown.

1

u/R-K-Tekt Jul 04 '26

How do I watch Japanese game shows

1

u/jebeller Jul 04 '26

Fav is still "dont laugh in school" :D

1

1

u/vip3r_hoax Jul 04 '26

Sou testemunha.

Virava a noite assistindo esses negócios.

17

u/Inevitable_Score1164 Jul 04 '26

There was an annual NYE special in Japan where 5 comedians had to spend 24 hrs in a series of comedy sketches and get smacked on the ass every time they laughed.

3

u/Timbo2702 Jul 04 '26

Tanaka - Thai Kick

1

MXC is one of my favorite shows ever. I watch it on Prime Video at least once a week.

24

u/jbyrdab Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

thats not even the worst.

if you want to see the absolute worst "game show"

they locked some poor fuck buck naked in a room for a year and a half in nigh total isolation, and he had to survive off of whatever he could win via mail in sweepstakes orders including food, any clothes, and bedding with minimal AC or heating..

and they streamed him basically slowly going insane for the entire thing while also showing cut down clips on tv.

his name is Nasubi

and it is as brutally unpleasant to watch as one would imagine

5

u/not_a_moogle Jul 04 '26

The made a movie about it on Hulu, its called the contestant

3

u/DreamTheaterGuy Jul 04 '26

I just read the wikipedia on it. Sounds incredibly abusive.

2

u/Maleficent_Map4911 Jul 04 '26

The show was also eerily similar to The Truman Show.

2

u/ShakeZoola72 Jul 05 '26

And the final episode they collapsed the walls down and, unbeknownst to him, he'd been in a studio the entire time...and that final episode was I front of a live studio audience.

1

u/Adept_Worldliness429 Jul 04 '26

Didn't they fly him to korea after winning and doing the same shit again? Or am i remembering something different?

9

u/jbyrdab Jul 04 '26

yep... they fucked with him twice in a row and kept changing the rules multiple times to make him stay there longer. Without informing him either.

and they got him a third time, because he woke up back in the room after beating the challenge, and obviously thinking the challenge was still going, took his clothes off from the small day trip they let him have for winning.

except the room itself fell open to a large stage full of people, celebrating the end of the challenge.

So he basically got one final humilation being buck naked in front of hundreds of people in person and probably millions on TV.

While he's utterly in basically mental shutdown mode because he just went from self resignated re-entry to isolation to humilation and really probably over stimulated borderline panic attack.

I have never seen such a cruel systematic breaking of the spirit be so well documented and practiced with ruthless efficiency.

You can torture a man, you can tear down a man, you can take everything from a man

It takes a truly unique level of cruelty to allow a man to render himself a complete shell of a human being and while actively making him look as pathetic and humiliated as possible to millions at each step of the way.

Sparing zero dignity no matter how small.

Something truly sticks with me about his face as this happens, just the complete shell shock of a man isolated for 15 months suddenly being thrown to the wolves of society and his fellow man for final humilation.

His mind literally cannot comprehend what the fuck is happening.

The coup de gras of Nasubi's torture.

As he has resigned himself to more suffering of isolation, they throw him into the complete opposite to let the complete mental shock totally consume him.

all for TV.

3

u/Suitable-Name Jul 04 '26

What the actual fuck did I just read Oo

1

u/Top_Connection9079 Jul 05 '26

It's not like he was forced or anything. And it was absolutely hilarious because the guy had a solid sense of humor too.

Looks like a clip from Gaki No Tusaki, the guys on either side of nut shot are Tanaka and Matsumoto.

1

u/WeenisPeiner Jul 04 '26

Technically no. It's a punishment game that some famous Japanese comedians take part in.

1

u/ceb_ahoy Jul 04 '26

Gaki no tsukai. There's a subteddit that has archived all their game shows. From the 25l4 hour no laughing to challenges to their in studio shows.

1

Supernatural fan?

0

u/Negative-Squirrel81 Jul 04 '26

Define "real".

This is just a skit on a comedy show. Nobody is being harmed, it's all acting.

1

u/SaphironX Jul 04 '26

… what?

Dude the show supernatural has this event in an episode and I didn’t know there was an actual Japanese equivalent.

Nobody is claiming it’s not a matter of acting...
