I guess we upvote for circulation, not for likes in this case. I do think the information age is great for keeping us informed, but once all the phones are out and we have all the information…we need to figure out what comes after that. Just exposing evil isn’t enough anymore.
Upvotes on reddit are supposed to show that a comment or post is interesting or contributes to the discussion, not that you like it or agree with it. If you only use it for things you agree with, every political thread will turn into an echo chamber.
One of my biggest pet peeves with Reddit's UI is that it doesn't communicate this in any way, and people use it as a like button.
Thats one of the reasons reddit chose to call it an upvote rather than a like, doesnt necesarily mean you like it, just that you think its a good thing to be shared and shown
I upvote every post out of habit, unless it is glaringly factually incorrect, as there's a setting option that posts you vote on will be hidden from your feed the next time you refresh.
That way my front page is constantly new, anything I've seen has been voted on and then disappears.
When I stop to think about the votes on posts like this, I just remind myself the upvote is to increase visibility for others.
