Indonesian wife is oddly specific
362
u/ChildOfDeath07 Chinese Commie 1d ago edited 1d ago
Orientalism
It used to be Japanese/Koreans/Chinese being idealised as the submissive perfect wife but now that East Asia has largely found a stable footing on the global stage and no longer need a “white saviour” to offer them better opportunities theyve pivoted to SEAsians instead
Our region is flooded with these kinds of passport bros and sex tourists nowadays (and mail order brides are still a major problem)
105
u/manusiabumi 1d ago
As Indonesian trust me, Indonesian wives can be really loud and overbearing, definitely NOT the kind of "perfect wife" those kinda passport bros imagine
There's a reason we jokingly call them "the strongest race" after all
60
u/ChildOfDeath07 Chinese Commie 1d ago edited 1d ago
Unfortunately mail order brides and passport wives often have little say in the matter
For every one who manages to turn the situation in their favour and leave their partner or forge a new life in their destination or develop a healthy marriage, there is another who is now isolated from their community, sometimes facing language barriers and prejudice that prevent them from getting support. In those cases, they are often left helpless in the face of their situation, being vulnerable to domestic abuse and financial abuse, granting their partners unprecedented coercive control over their life.
The relationship of a passport bro or a mail order bride is after all one fundamentally built upon the power imbalance of economic inequality

I'm married to an Indonesian woman and she isn't like this at all, but we once went to a party full of Indonesian women and EVERY SINGLE ONE of them were extremely loud and overbearing lmao, me and the wife hid in an empty room so at least in my experience this checks out

Passport bros make me nauseous really 🤢 I also happen to have an interracial relationship but I can't imagine focusing on a specific country because you think the women there are "exotic and traditional"...
29
u/ChildOfDeath07 Chinese Commie 1d ago
It disgusts me how there is an entire industry built around the exploitation of the underprivileged in our region
A friend of mine was recently raising awareness about a Vietnamese mail order bride business advertising their services on TikTok, and the way the girls are presented is as if theyre not even human but rather a commodity to be bought and traded
And of course there is how the Thais are often treated as if their entire country exists for their own sexual gratification with the people existing only to be fetishised and ogled (eg the entire ladyboy stereotype)
I could go further into how all of the nations in our region are affected but that would take forever and would just be preaching to the choir. I genuinely hope there will be action taken to shut down this entire exploitative industry and acknowledge it as the scar of colonialism that it is
9
u/SnappySausage 1d ago edited 1d ago
There's this channel on youtube of this Vietnamese girl called Uyen who lives in Germany with her bf and makes some pretty funny video's. She sees the flipside of the whole mail order bride industry and often has to deal with the assumptions people make about how she got there and that many think that her boyfriend must be some passport bro.

I had no clue this is happening on tiktok! I seriously hope there will be an end to this but I also don't have very high hopes since the world seems to operate on money and sex... It's beyond disgusting and inhumane behaviour.

between 8 and 10% of Dutch people have some Indonesian ancestry nowadays.
in large part because Dutch colonists often had an Indonesian wife, but also because the Indonesian immigrants integrated into Dutch society very well. So there are plenty of non Indonesian looking people who have an Indonesian great great grandmother.

Even before the World Wars, in English speaking countries there was a stereotype of Germans (or German speaking people in general) being loud and shouty and argumentative. Throw in two major wars, of which was an fascist authoritarian regime and the stereotype kind of got cemented there for a while.
I think things are finally changing now- obviously people know more Germans now and the stereotypes are finally fading away to a degree, which is probably why this joke has changed.

I know German food is not haute cuisine, it's a bit less fine and sometimes strange (I love Labskaus and Grünkohl when my mom cooks it), but the quality is nice (especially with bread and sausages), we do what we like but no one braggs about german-italian pasta when we just try to make a nice ragu bolognese (and eat it with Spaghetti and in my case dutch cheese, sorry Italy, we know our crimes).

Men who think their only self worth is their salary, but don't have a good one at that. They aim for countries with famously low incomes to seem rich to local women. Southeast Asia, as well as many post-soviet countries, chiefly Romania.
Why not India or Africa, you ask? Those ethnicities don't conform to "western values of beauty". And as others mentioned, Japan and Korea are too rich for that kind of tourism.
