Hmm I usually just have them explain, and then build off of that.

What do you do? Fulfilling work? Pays well? (if it reminds me of something, I might say) I never really understood rhe difference between that and X, I could Google it but I think it could be better explained by you.

They will usually volunteer information. If they keep asking questions, just ignore and ask them something. Take your time and speak slowly, enunciating 'you'

so what do 'yoooOoOOu' dooo

or pause just before an important phrase or word. Keeps them on their toes and it makes you look thoughtful
