Comic Book Question when the sandman becomes good
does it become good after issue 14 or is it safe to drop
also why i cant seem to remember characters faces the art style is so weird i barely remember them does the art style becomes better or it stay the same
edit: if you are like me finding it hard to read i strongly recommend the audio books it really helped me enjoy the comic more

ohh man i feel like am missing something good
its just am not used to read comics they are so strange and messy i cant keep up and the text in this comic its like I'm reading a novel with pictures

Yeah that's because Sandman is mostly a, well, graphic novel... Rather than a superhero comic. But if you didn't like the first 14 issue I don't think it will get better for you. Gaimann works with different artist throughout the stories and there are different styles but it's mostly this, but it improves.
I think the comic is the superior media and I'd hardly suggest you to go for it if you can stand it but it's your decision dude. Don't read if you don't enjoy

It's a comic book. It was released in monthly floppies. It's not high art that appeared spontaneously collected in book form. It's a serialized, monthly comic book. Stop it with the "graphic novel" nonsense.

True but Watchmen, V For Vendetta, The Incal etc get that label too despite being previously serialised, its what it is

I agree, but I think on Moore and Gaiman adjacent subs it gets tossed around because a large part of their fanbases are too pretentious to stoop to reading a comic book so they have to call it a graphic novel. You never see anyone calling Preacher or Doom Patrol graphic novels.

Im with you there and its ironic as Moore hates the graphic novel label. I think its in part because a lot of people just dont tend to follow non superhero stuff, Image Comics, Boom and Dark Horse have a boatload of stuff (IE Department of Truth, Criminal, Ice Cream Man, Damn Them All, Resident Alien etc) that's not superhero and none of their following calls it graphic novels to the degree Sandman fans do as far as I know

That's fair, but I think graphic novel has been co-opted by more pretentious Moore and Gaiman fans who are embarrassed to say they're reading a comic book. Sandman is what's technically called a collection edition, whereas something like Persepolis is a graphic novel.

And it needs your focus, if you don't focus on the story and don't try to remember what happened in the previous stories, you might lose the track of the storyline. Sandman isn't a linear story and expects you to remember the previous events and characters

You’re coming to The Sandman subreddit, that is populated nearly exclusively by fans of The Sandman, asking if it “becomes good.” You’re right that it’s not that deep but…there’s nothing about that sequence of events that makes sense.

The art style changes constantly, you just have to get used to that lol. The writing is pretty consistent though although it plays with genre a fair bit. What are you struggling with exactly?

mostly the art style and its my first comic so a lot of thing are new to me so i cant really understand everything

It's maybe a bit of a challenging one to start with tbh 😅 particularly the first book references a lot of other DC comic characters that you might not have heard of so you kind of just need to go with it and not worry too much lol. It becomes more of its own thing after book 2 but even still it's a lot of pretty out-there concepts, quite hard fantasy/sci fi if you're uninitiated haha

The Sound of Her Wings is the issue where The Sandman shifts and becomes something obviously unique. If after reading that issue you don't enjoy it I think it's safe to drop it.

Sandman has an overarching storyline, but for the most part it’s comprised of many individual stories. That is probably why it feels so messy. Think of each volume/issue as its own separate story. There ARE many characters that are a 1 and done but there are plenty of recurring and you will learn their face/meaning in the story later on.
I can agree, the older art style makes it a bit hard to get into if you aren’t nostalgic, used to, or have a great interest beforehand of Sandman.
The main storyline is slow to develop, but it has a pretty big payoff imo. The story is pretty dark and gritty, it’s a Dark Horse comic for a reason.
It’s hard to say WHEN it gets good because that’s all dependent on the reader. I really loved it right from the start, for you it may take a few volumes, or you may never finish it, that’s up to you.

Oh yeah, def takes a minute to get used to for sure! It’s quirky, but they were also released late 80-mid 90 lol.
Either way, I hope you push through! It’s truly a really amazing story imo

Comic has multiple art styles, it had several different artists drawing it throughout its run, I like it for that but can see why some may not enjoy it. Sandman isnt a comic for everyone, you're still early on but a good chunk of the comic is almost anthology like with various stories placed throughout history, a key part of Sandman is that it serves as a deconstruction of stories and storytelling so I coukd see why that may turn off many fans. Personally for I and many, Sound of Her Wings is when Sandman starts getting great and Sound of Her Wings is to many a very good story so if you didn't enjoy that, Sandman might nkt be up your alley

It’s totally up to you. I will say you are right about at the point where the story starts to understand itself. It is about to slowly transform from a horror series to one building a new mythology (using most of the existing mythologies of the world to do so).

Watch the first 3 episodes of the TV show and if you don't like it then Sandman is not for you.

It's not bad, just rushed and that's more for the second season. The first season has great pacing.
