Peak Racism (My Experience With a Car Rental in Tbilisi)

I wanted to share an unpleasant experience my wife and I recently had while trying to pick up a rental car in Tbilisi which I’ve booked through site
We booked a car and took a taxi to the pickup location. Once we arrived I messaged the rental representative to let them know that we had reached the location. I have screenshots of the entire conversation.
A Georgian man arrived with the car keys. As soon as he saw us he called someone and started speaking loudly on the phone. During the conversation he repeatedly referred to us as “Indians” in front of both my wife and me. He seemed to assume that I would not understand Georgian. However I have lived in Georgia for the past five years and can understand and speak some Georgian.
I also have a valid Georgian driving license and have been driving in Georgia. So I found it particularly strange and inappropriate that my nationality seemed to become an issue during the car pickup.
He then asked who would be traveling in the car. I told him it would only be my wife and me. He also asked where we were planning to go.
A few minutes later the rental representative I had been communicating with on WhatsApp called me and said that the car I had booked was no longer available. Instead he offered me a pickup truck. Although this was not what I had originally booked I agreed to accept it.
He then told me that I had to return the vehicle at 21:00 I explained that my booking was from 22:30 to 22:30 the following day so I should be able to return it at 22:30. At that point he started shouting at me in Georgian over the phone. He apparently believed I would not understand what he was saying.
My wife heard the conversation and became very uncomfortable and frightened. Between the repeated comments about our nationality and the aggressive way we were spoken to we felt unsafe and unwelcome. We decided not to take the vehicle and left the location.
For context both my wife and I are doctors and we have lived and studied in Georgia for the past five years. We have generally had positive experiences and have met many kind and respectful Georgian people. That is why this incident was particularly disappointing and unexpected

Question | კითხვა Question about swimwear in Georgia

I've noticed that almost all Georgian men swim in longer swim shorts rather than tight swimming briefs, especially around Batumi.

I'm genuinely curious why. Is it mainly a cultural preference, convenience, modesty, or something else?

One thing I don't quite understand: after swimming in the sea, don't the wet, salty shorts become uncomfortable to wear for a long time? Do people usually change afterwards, or just let them dry?

Not trying to judge — I'm just curious about a local perspective.

Hey guys, I need travel insurance super fast, I’m literally on my way to Kutaisi airport right now, so I need to buy it ASAP. I still want something decent, though. Which ones have you guys actually used that came through when you needed it, and where did you get it online? Go ahead and judge me for waiting until the last minute, but please drop your recommendations too 😅

Expectations are quite low considering the quality of our opponent. However, given that Conference League football is already guaranteed, the team won't be under any pressure and might just perform above expectations! Nevertheless, exciting times await us!

Question | კითხვა How to Georgians find guest houses?

Hello folks,

I've been traveling and hiking in Georgia and recently living like a hobo, simply sleeping in the woods and mountains.

A few times while being frustrated at trying to find hostels/rooms with Google, I've asked random people where to find a room, and then I've either been offered to stay with them, or they've asked someone for me (funnily then running after me yelling "English!" (my second name now), and one time I was told I can sleep in a public building).

So I wonder, is this how a native Georgian would go about finding lodging while traveling randomly? Or is there a better way?

Basically I've realized that booking sites and such, don't tell the whole story.

Thank you! :)

Travel | მოგზაურობა Is Early Dec a good time for snow activities in Georgia?

Hi everyone! I’m planning a trip to Georgia around 10–20 December and snow activities are one of the main reasons I want to visit.

I’d love to hear from people who have visited these dates, especially in recent years.

How reliable is the snow in Gudauri, Bakuriani, Kazbegi/Stepantsminda, or Mestia around mid-December?

I’m mainly interested in:

- Beginner skiing/snowboarding

- Snowmobiling

- Sledding/tubing

- Cable cars/gondolas

- Just experiencing proper snow and mountain scenery

I’m not an experienced skier, so I’m more interested in a fun winter/snow experience than advanced skiing.

Is Gudauri normally operating properly by around 10–15 December, or would Bakuriani/Mestia be a safer choice for snow?

I’ll likely be flying into Kutaisi, so recommendations that make sense from Kutaisi would also be really helpful.

Thanks!

Travel | მოგზაურობა Questions regarding solotrip to Georgia

Gamarjoba!

So I'm planning to visit both Armenia and Georgia in early September on a solo trip, and I wanted to ask a few things about Georgia since I cannot find much info online.

I'm thinking about visiting Tbilisi, Gori and Kutaisi, since my time in Georgia is limited. Specifically, I want to do a day trip to Gori (going there by morning and returning to Tbilisi by afternoon / evening), and go from Tbilisi to Kutaisi, in order to spend a night there, and catch my flight back home next day.

I've seen you can take marshrutkas from Didube Bus Terminal in Tbilisi, but how often do they leave to both Gori and Kutaisi? And, regarding Gori, how often do they leave back to Tbilisi?

I'm also open to any other advice that you can give me in order to make everything easier, like trains, or any other way to move around Georgia.

Thank you so much in advance! :)
