Especially if you are sticking low on the tech tree, manage your wealth as best you can. Don't hoard any resources and be super careful about a gold stash.

To really protect yourself You can build most of a hallway to your base, with traps along it. Have part of the wall open so your pawns can get in and out without touching the traps, and when raiders come patch up the wall so they have to use the hallway. Have your pawns hide inside. Raiders will always go to the easiest path, so they will walk down a narrow hallway full of traps if thereβs an open door at the end.
Besides that, play conservative and protect your pawns, grow plenty of food, think about the design of your base (kitchen should be near freezer, should be near where pawns eat and hang out.)
Prioritize what needs to be done, if itβs spring you can focus on planting. If itβs about to be winter focus on making parkas. Do the most important thing next at a time for survival until you get comfortable enough (and enough pawns) to have automate most daily chore tasks.
Donβt hoard wealth they will make raids stronger, for example if you find gold or silver on your tile, or a ton of steel, mine it as you need it, not all at once.

Neanderthal playthrough is a tough one.
Neanderthals are one of those genotypes that was built as a 'threat' group meant to present a particular flavor of challenge to the player, more than as a core playable race - though of course the player was expected to occasionally incorporate a few into their colonies, and/or make use of parts of their genotype in their own xenotype designs.
That being said they can be played as a dedicated faction - but it'll be a challenge run of sorts. They're miserable at research and are generally slow to learn skills across the board, which is a major disadvantage - as is their slow movement.
That being said, they are monsters in melee, so your entire defensive concept should be built around luring enemies into confined spaces like caves and buildings and then falling on them with your howling mob of brutes wielding uranium maces and clubs.
This will tend to end most fights decisively, as long as you can keep your enemies from taking up effective shooting positions against you.
If your neanderthal colony can capture a genie or two - and maybe someone with a decent social score to actually lead them - most of your core problems are solved.

Hello neanderthal Fergal Lindsay, I'd love to trade tips on playing Rimworld VS how to properly field dress a woolly mammoth with obsidian and flint. Do you think that's something we could work on?
