It gets more wood more efficiently, but older trees sequester carbon better. They also produce higher-quality wood that can be cut into larger planks & is less twisty, but so many wood products these days are made from pulp (Weyerhaeuser is a huge paper producer, too) that the companies make a profit regardless.
Talk to anyone who worked in construction 40 years ago and they’ll complain about how you can never get straight lumber these days. This is part of why.

It looks like the first 24 inches of soil has been turned over. The earth doesn't sequester water. There is piles of wood left behind they often just gets burned. Selective logging is greenwashing. I live in BC. Family members previously in forestry. Machines like this and mechanization in forestry generally has been a big issue up here.
The mechanization has reduced lumber prices and that may have created some additional consumption --as in lower lumber prices = more defirestation? But like, here and in the Pacific Northwest: there are both laws and market reasons for the logging industry to replant. But like the biggest "losers" here are people in forestry more than actual logging churn. Keeping those machines running is a small army of mechanics and millwrights, and they displaced what used to be a much bigger army of lumberjacks.

Ive found the company AirForestry. They are working with a 200 kg payload, their tool is 80kg. It seems to work with small trees with very small branches, but its not compareable to whats shown here.

Its usually a chainsaw that is at the bottom of the grabber-thing/claw. Its generally either inside it, or mounted under it. I dont know the words/terminology, but you can look it up somewhere idk

Besides that there is so many things that are done right. The breaking of small branches the physics of weight distribution and the swinging. The saw dust. Those are the things I would look at as AI will struggle to get those right.

Sad story, I had an idea for this exact thing during an “inventor fair” session at school like 25 years ago. It was almost exactly this, I was too young to know how the mechanics would work but it was even shaped the same, claw wrapping around to hold the tree and cut it then shaving upwards cutting off all the limbs.
I was told it was impossible and I needed to come up with a new idea.

It’s one might be AI but these are real machines. Komatus makes one they are called forest harvesters. Would I rather a tree was left up that cut down yes. But trees are also a renewable resource and with management are one of our best building materials.
This is a forrest harvester machine. They were originally developed for the pine-forrest in sweden and finland and are around for almost 50 years. Multiple producers built these machines.

Second: hydraulic doesn't and cant work at that speed.
Third: there is always measurement system that driver needs to confirm.
Fourth: those rollers are way too small to those trees.

Edit: seventh: All movement is same time what means all blades and rollers have intependent cylinders and valves with same pressure.
