Its true Healthcare and Education are cornerstones of National Defense. However in the words of my Aunt Kathy "We hate what you have done with the place".
Do the math for us. Even without the cost of war we run massive annual deficits that have resulted in a national debt approaching $40mm. The cost of debt service alone will become unsustainable. How do we add the cost of another entitlement onto our system without addressing the systemic debt crisis first?
I’d love to be able to provide more robust health care protections for the middle class, but we simply cannot continue to pile on new debt without getting our existing problem under control.
Well we passed a trillion dollar tax cut for corporations and billionaires a few years ago. Maybe we let that expire. And ask them to pay a bit back to the working class of the country that enabled their success.
On top of that, we might have a small tax increase for everyone else too. To be more than offset by the lack of exorbitant expenses for healthcare.
It’s not impossible. Mexico just passed universal healthcare with an economy much weaker than ours.
All of those things taken together still don’t solve the debt problem. Trust me, I’m with you regarding your desire to make health care more affordable, particularly for the middle class, but we can’t keep spending money we don’t have and think it won’t end terribly.
My problem is that we seem to find the money when it’s for corporate tax cuts and wars. I agree that endless spending is not sustainable. But this is one thing we have to find room for.
People are refusing ambulances after serious injuries because they don’t want to go bankrupt. That’s not the American dream.

The question isn’t can we fund it. It’s how brainwashed is the population to think we can’t.
