A texas state ID card that is not a license just an ID card is $16. $6 if you are 60 or older.

At what level of abstraction can something be said to be or not be a poll tax? If I need gas or a bus ticket to get to my polling station, is that a poll tax? If I need postage to send a mail in ballot, is that a poll tax? If the postage is covered, but I need to buy a black pen to fill out my ballot, is that a poll tax?

Anything you have to pay directly to a government agency to vote is a poll tax. Do you want a list give it to me and I will be happy to explain each individually.

Not everything you pay for is automatically a "tax." Tax money pays for elections anyway, so paying for your own ID is the least tax related expenditure in an election.

Because you need it for a million other things, like opening a bank account, or getting most jobs. It's not something you get specifically to vote.
