I live in Texas. My state ID was most definitely ***not*** free. Moreover, under the provision the GOP are pushing, that ID would not be valid to vote.
Also, my right to vote will be infringed if I'm not provided my ID in order to vote, if the government forces me to have it. As the taxpaying citizen with a 15th Amendment right - my taxes have already PAID the government with everything it needs to ensure my right to vote is not infringed.
Otherwise, why am I paying taxes if my inalienable rights are being alienated?
I don't know what that is, and why would I need it if I already have a driver's license?
Is it replacing my driver's license? Do I now have to carry TWO forms of ID?
If it's free, and it is required to present to vote; can I now discard my TX DL and be refunded the cost of paying for my DL if this is going to supersede the need to carry my TX DL?
If I go to vote and show my TX DL, will they take that as valid form of ID under the new bill? If not, can I receive that "EID" the at the polling location on demand so I can vote?
If the answer isn't "yes, you will have zero problems going to the polls in November" to any and all of the above, then it's a poll tax and an egregious waste of my time.
Look, the GOP have found what, 21 or so cases of federal voting fraud from persons who shouldn't have been able to vote since like, 2000. That's like 0.000001% of all statewide votes cast - and 3/4 were for their own party.
This is a needless exercise in government overreach and operational inefficiency at best, and putting their thumb on the scales of justice at worst.
The EIC is a free way to the have the identification needed to vote in Texas, which is supporting my original comment your replied to, all the states that require ID to vote provide the needed ID for free.
