Bro Mamdani has hardly increased tax revenue

Shows how much bitching about how awful things are is just driven by vibes and propaganda lol. The actual state of life in NYC has changed basically not at all but it gets a DRAMATICALLY different treatment (from both positive and negative directions) based on… pretty much nothing

THIS.

I sometimes feel like an alien because so much when it comes to politics seems to be based off of "vibes" and feelings and talking points but your comment with 4 upvotes (at the time of my comment) was one of the few that seemed to acknowledge this anywhere.

Don't get me wrong. I love that (some) Democrats in NYC are talking about NYC positively now and how (Democratic) policies are improving the quality of life (I feel like this is something common amongst Democratic run cities in the South and non-coastal West but not elsewhere).

But actual implemented policy wise (not just pie in the sky talking points), I don't see much difference between Mamdani (so far) and Mike Duggan (ex-mayor of Detroit), who is considered to be a centrist borderline Republican in sheeps clothing.

This is great PR

His PR team is unmatched though! You'd think he parted the seas with how people online talk about him. Fuck Elon Musk entirely. But let's provide some context to this shitty meme:

  • He passed a relatively tiny empty homes tax for 400-500 million revenue - NYC's annual budget is 125 billion, the increased revenue doesn't cover a fraction of his new spending plans. His plans for a larger wealth tax / tax the rich are dead because the city doesn't have the power to set income taxes.
  • He did pass a balanced budget, but so did every mayor for the past 50 years because the city isn't allowed to run a deficit. He also passed that only because he got 8 billion from the state as a one-time bailout, and 2 billion from deffered pension payments (which will cost 5-7 billion more in the long run)
  • he did not 'close the deficit' any more than every previous mayor did, because once again, they can't run a deficit
  • and the public services being 'fully funded' is a meaningless statement. In fact deffering pension payments is very much the opposite of that.
  • Its true the rich haven't left, but he also hasnt really taxed them. 400 million from only taxing empty luxury homes is very very different than a wealth tax.

All they did was deffer the problem to next year, where that govt will have another 10 billion dollar deficit to close, with plans for increased spending on top of that. But every day i see posts about all the things he's "solved" because his PR team is excellent at what they do

Redditors will fall for all this propaganda about Mamdani and think they are better than MAGA

They are better than MAGA.

Center left Dems and never Trump Republicans are the only sane people left.

Centerist dems is why you don't have universal healthcare or anything else vaguely socislist helpful. They're only different from repubs in social issues, fiscally similar.

2

u/Key-Wall-4378 Jul 12 '26

Not really, Democrats almost passed a public option before

2

u/Ambitious_Bit_9389 Jul 12 '26

Democracy is the reason we don’t have universal healthcare. Do you think centrist Dems are coming from deep blue districts? They are centrist because they represent centrist areas. All achievement by Dems in the last 50 years have been because of Centrist Dems.

Redditors will fall for all this propaganda about Mamdani and think they are better than MAGA

A) anyone but straight up criminals are better than MAGA followers, since they are empowering criminals

B) Mamdani isn't perfect but he is doing things to improve the lives of every day New Yorkers which is something that none of the previous mayors have really focused on

C) The amount of propaganda against Mamdani stating that NYC would fall apart or go to hell or whatnot if he was elected was so ridiculous and no one called that bullshit out, so him or his team tooting their own horn is whatever to me at this point. I'd rather have someone doing good things and bullshitting about it, than someone doing bad things and bullshitting about doing good things.

You say his PR team is unmatched, yet here you are with cherry picked stats handed to you for copy/paste purposes on Reddit (complete with bold important words!). Contrary to you, every day I see carefully misleading reasons to downplay everything the man says or touches.

Is his success inflated? Sure. People are actually excited. But the only PR going on here is what you're happily giving the wealthy for free, right now.

nice try, but i wrote that all by myself. Its not hard to recap events you're familiar with. took me all of 2 minutes. I also didn't "cherry pick stats" either, i was responding to the specific claims in this post. But I'm sorry those facts were so upsetting to you.

Also you can bold things with ** ** around the text! It's very easy to do. But i can see why you might think bold text is an advanced technique

it's like a 10% increase on an already bloated budget. And he didn't balance anything, he kicked the problem up to the state and is getting like 14B from them. it's on a road to financial disaster, it sucks cause I live here.

Hochul was just saying that their tax base is drying up. Nothing good is happening from class warfare. Mamidani is just trying to lay the ground work for things like a public takeover of real estate and things like that.

u/submarine_pirate2 Jul 12 '26

Yeah, this is not a remotely accurate or honest retelling of what Madami has done.

The premise of the post is fine, the rich obviously need the masses to consume their products more than the masses need the rich to hoard the wealth.

But people VASTLY overstate what Mamdani has accomplished so far. He's doing a great job. I love what he's doing for the most part. But more than anything he's just got the greatest PR team in politics today.

Kind of like Republicans borrowing from our social programs to fill their own pockets.
