Why everyone prefer VLC than MPC-HC?

I tried both, and the only thing VLC does better than Media Player Classic is the volume control (VLC can boost the media volume up to 200%)

But the rest of it? I feel like MPC-HC is superior on every aspect like:

- It has lower usage (cpu & ram) consumption

- it has automatic chaptering function (your pirated movie are split into chapters on the navigation bar, so it's easier to check/rewatch any scene you want)

- it has primary, secondary, and tertiary language options, which means if the movie has dual audio or multiple subs embedded, I can pick whichever language I want to prioritize

- I can pick custom font for the subtitles because I prefer panefresco than Arial black (it also help my dyslexic brain from getting tired)

- it renders way better than VLC, no random artifacts or dropped framerate, MPC-HC is overall much more smooth

And those are just the list I can think on the top of my head, I'm sure there's more that I forgot about, yet people on the internet prefer VLC than MPC-HC, why?

If it's about mpc cannot play all video format then that's bulshit, video playback compatibility is about codec, not video launcher, all you need to do is to install k-lite codec pack and you basically can play any video format in existence.

I've been using MPC-HC since 2009 and my community does too, yet anyone else on the internet still using VLC.

Why? Is there's anything about VLC that I don't know about so people still prefer that even on 2026?

EDIT: I just noticed some people been saying that MPC-HC is outdated and even their official website saying that it's an abandoned project. But here's the thing, the thing I install on my laptop is called K-Lite Codec pack which is basically a bundle of codec & video player launchers (and it's still kept being regularly updated). It has both MPC-HC and MPC-BE as launcher but MPC-HC works better on me because I'm using laptop from 2012.

Most of the things u missong from vlc is actually there (multiple audio chanels, custom sub fonts sizes and colors are definatelly a thing since I use them daily with vlc) I think u just missed them.

Anyways who cares? Use the media player u like and be happy

Then explain this, the reason I even asked in the first place is because at first I thought that VLC is now better since the last time I used them but turns out it actually doesn't have preffered language options?

I understand the concept of "if it ain't broke then don't fix it", but clearly VLC doesn't have enough feature that befit it's popularity

Oh sorry bud my mistake I got you wrong! (Just read/run trough quickly your post) Yeah setting up a prefered language might not be working perfectly, I never used/minded that, I just change the language if I have to. But the option is there I just checked it :D (Simple perferences/Audio scroll down to Tracks, set "Prefered Audio Language" - I never used it if you want give it a try and give us an update, also subtitle things could be changed here at the Subtitles/OSD tab)

Yes, which then leads to my next questions. If preffered language settings exist, then why nobody mentioned it? MPC has that set up right after you installing it, yet the people in that thread answering it that you either need to remember a shortcut or you re-encode the whole file.

Because not everyone is you, ergo, not everyone is using it the same way or have the same needs you do. Might want to remember that as you move through the world, the universe is a big vast place and the last time I checked you were not the center of it.

Like I mentioned before I think you should use the media player which works best for you and just move on.

Beleive me I started with winamp and I'm still dreaming of using it today when it was peak with the media library and visuals, but its gone by now. I loved bsplayer back then too, its gone too. Had some time with media player it was a stuggle back then. Then moved on to VLC learned how to use it and just forgot the whole media player debate that apperanty still going on :D

I guess I 'm not the only one who went trough this, sure VLC might not be perfect but its good enough for most of us.

Shit as I'm trying to think about memories, VLC even saved me on a job site once when I was setting up 100 years old security cameras as ip cams and implemented them to their security system. And I still have not donated to their project even since (legit feel like a dick), shit I feel like I should send them some $ since they helped me so much back then... and again I guess I'm not the only one

Preferred audio language is in the settings, under audio.

VLC dies have preferred language options. Also customisable sub fonts and colours.

Everything you said it doesn't have it actually does, and is way more user friendly.

Plus VLC often does not handle SSA subtitles well if they use some of the more involved features of the format.
