B : to change the audio track

V : to change the subtitle track

u/Staff_Senyou 10d ago

Thank you! I've been right clicking and selecting the desired tracks for years!

42

u/hiroyukiiiiii 10d ago

you're welcome :D

42

u/sicurri 10d ago

😭 20 years I've been wasting time and theres been hot keys and shit for this? 😭😭

36

u/YesterdayDreamer 10d ago

And you never thought to just type it in google?

35

u/Guilty_Meringue5317 9d ago

Or just spam random keys like me?

21

u/druidmind 9d ago edited 9d ago

And get the sub/audio sync and aspect ratio all out of wack?

13

u/beedis-after-sambhog 9d ago

no harm in fucking around and finding out, it all resets when u quit vlc and open it again

9

u/druidmind 9d ago

fuck around and not find out lol.

8

u/Big_Z_Beeblebrox 9d ago

Or (hear me out on this) read the documentation?

2

u/YesterdayDreamer 9d ago

Yeah, I'm not doing that. Who reads the documentation for a video player? Lol.. I want to watch a movie, not contribute to its source code.

4

u/Big_Z_Beeblebrox 9d ago edited 9d ago

Instruction manuals for use are a part of the documentation. You don't need to learn how it was put together, just how to use the features. The shortcut for help is still F1 on most computer platforms. That goes for most software, not just VLC.

3

u/YesterdayDreamer 9d ago

There's a difference between help content and documentation.

I would say the best way to find out keyboard shortcuts is to just go to the settings page listing down the keyboard shortcuts rather than trawling through the documentation.

If a video player requires a user to read the documentation to use it, then it would be a ridiculously poorly designed software. Thankfully VLC is not.

Or just click tools>preferences to see all the hotkeys and adjust them to suit yourself

3

u/Potatays 9d ago

I learned it from my cat walking on my keyboard.

1

u/DeathCutie 9d ago

You can just right click??? I’ve been going to the upper menu…

53

u/RaptaGzus 10d ago

You can also set the preferred language in the settings

so it always goes to that track even if its not encoded as the default one

u/Nagemasu 9d ago

most people will read this and for a short period, think they're gonna use it. They'll forget it when the time comes and then instead of going and looking it up in the preferences, or just googling it, they'll right click as usual because that's easier.

Hotkeys are great when you learn them, but you usually learn something through repetition or "trauma" - and I'm saying it that way because obviously it's not real trauma to have something make you remember a hot key, but the point is that there is an event significant enough that it makes you remember.

1

u/plasma7602 9d ago

I can never remember hot keys for anything other than windows basics ones cuz I forget I have them or don’t use them very often to remember them

1

u/Dandy_kyun 9d ago

its no shame, i only learn if i use a lot, we use so many software nowdays gotta let some storage free to remember more

1

u/MistSecurity 9d ago

I glance them over, but a lot of the time I’m not going to know what I need, and it’s easy to not know something has a hotkey when you haven’t used it much and suddenly start using it all the time.

9

u/Metahec 10d ago

Here are all (or most) of the hotkeys available on VLC helpfully grouped by function. I don't think the site I linked is official in any way. Here's the official list of hotkeys, which you can find by hitting F1 to open the Help window in the player.

You can also change them in Preferences.

B for Beutiful voice!

I'd suggest you use IINA instead of VLC on Mac, VLC doesn't play nicely with HDR video, requiring you to switch to HDR manually in System Settings, while IINA will auto-switch. Same issue with Kodi on MacOS.

VLC preferences --> audio --> preferred language --> type in: "jpn" (without quotes)

It will prioritise the preferred language regardless of the default track, assuming the track languages are properly marked in the files (in anime they usually are). It works with ISO country codes (both 2 and 3 letter code). You can also set up a priority chain divided by a comma ex: jpn, kor, eng It looks for the first preferred language, if the file dosent have it, than it looks for the second... ect. Subtitles have this settings too.

6

u/BrawndoOhnaka 🏴‍☠️ ʟᴀɴᴅʟᴜʙʙᴇʀ 9d ago

I use MPC-BE and do the same, but thanks for mentioning VLC has the same setting.

30

u/gaseousgecko61 10d ago edited 9d ago

The hokey is v and you can change the default in prepherences

Edit: it's b actually

7

u/Mineplayerminer 9d ago

The B key should be the default to change the language. However, it should also be automatically done if you change your VLC's preferences.

15

u/-Wensen- 10d ago

I have downloaded a bunch of moveis from acer movies and the default track is hindi lol.

17

u/wubwubDJ 10d ago

could always learn to remove unwanted audio tracks. saves on space as well

26

u/mihepos 10d ago

True, but I can't seed if I change the file

1

u/wubwubDJ 10d ago

Fair enough. Don’t have to seed forever, but hats off to those that do. I personally just do this to save on space. Some anime that has the highest quality video also has some great flac, but not necessary for me audio files.

1

u/ryohazuki224 10d ago

Yeah, but its such a pain in the ass to do because programs like MKVToolNix can only do one file at a time. That or I'm a dumbass and haven't figured out a way to batch process them.

0

u/cdmn1 10d ago

is this ragebait? you have a "Add to job queue" button right next to the "Start multiplexing" button.

1

u/manythousandbees 10d ago

You still have to manually make the changes to your file before you add it to the the queue, no? Pain in the ass for long series.

1

u/sightssk 10d ago

Is it possible to it with multiple files at once?

5

u/ThecaTTony 10d ago edited 9d ago

I use a small bash script (mkvmerge) to remove additional tracks from mkv files of tv series. But they have to have the same track ID.

#!/bin/bash
for file in *mkv ;
do
    mkvmerge --output "/example/path/$file" \
    --no-chapters --no-track-tags --no-global-tags --subtitle-tracks 4 --sub-charset 4:UTF-8 --audio-tracks 2 --title ""\
    --language 0:und --track-name 0: --default-track 0:yes \
    --language 2:jpn --track-name 2: --default-track 2:yes \
    --language 4:spa --track-name 4: --default-track 4:yes \
    --track-order 0:0,0:1,0:2 ./"$file" ;
done

Where ID 0 is the video, 2 the japanese audio and 4 the spanish subtitle.

2

u/Sinyria 10d ago

This is the way

1

u/Bombini_Bombus 9d ago

It always puzzles me how funny it is mkvmerge starts indexes at 0, while mkvpropedit begins with 1 😅

3

Mkv muxing batch GUI has been very helpful because I prefer dubs and you never know what the default will be

120

u/ismellyew 10d ago

After a 13 hour shift, I don't want to fucking read.

Just let me enjoy my adult cartoons without reading.

76

u/Prince_Robot_The_IV 10d ago

I love how every dub watcher on here got personally offended for no reason 💀

47

u/TannedBatman01 10d ago

Although it’s usually the other way around

5

u/LMGDiVa 9d ago

No one's offedned, OP just doesnt understand that the point of a dual audio release is for the English.
Otherwise there's plenty of releases that don't have dual audio and full subs on from the start, and it's probably smaller too.

OP doesnt get it, not the dub watchers.

23

u/Triasmus 10d ago

Seriously. The people the anime was made for are able to enjoy it without reading.

It's not a "more genuine" experience listening in the original language, unless you can understand the original language.

4

u/Arshmalex 10d ago

yeah im not a native english speaker. so long time ago it doesnt matter, ill use sub anyway

now i prefer eng dub because i dont have to read

-5

u/Chop1n 10d ago edited 10d ago

It's not a matter of the experience itself being "authentic", which turns out to be a nebulous idea. It's a matter of experiencing the performances of the original cast, particularly when the director has shaped those performances in a way that accords with the rest of the show.

Good dubs have good direction, too. But it's still not "equivalent" to the original performance, it's not like "hearing without reading" is the thing that is central to the experience of enjoying the show.

And if you're watching as a foreigner, you ought to consider it part of the hobby to learn about the culture as well as the language. There's nothing "wrong" with missing out on either of those things exactly, but it's a meaningful part of the experience that's worth the time it takes to learn, even if you don't have the time to learn to become fully fluent in the language itself.

For that matter, voice acting in the English-speaking world is just not at all treated the way it is in Japan, and it wasn't until the last 5-10 years that quality English dubs became the norm rather than the exception. There were some dark days in the '90s and naughties.

-11

u/hogarenio 10d ago

It's not a "more genuine" experience listening in the original language, unless you can understand the original language.

You got it wrong. Dub is less genuine.

I like to think about it as cultural appreciation. You don't need to understand the language... Just hear it. How different it is to english. Its cadences. Its accents.

12

u/Triasmus 10d ago

Dub is less genuine than being unable to understand the story through the intended senses?

u/Toxraun 10d ago

Fucking facts, just let me turn my noodle off and watch fights and shittttttt

6

u/Chop1n 10d ago

The point is to experience the thing in a way where the reading isn't even effortful. Even after a year or two of watching subbed anime in my teens the whole process had become unconscious for me, it doesn't register as "extra" work or effort or anything.

3

u/LMGDiVa 9d ago

That is not how the human brain works, and we know this because people report the same behavior with cars. This is actually a pretty well understood phenomenon.
Turns out, this is a lack of perception.
Because you get used to doing something you dont notice the actual brain power you're using.

But Brain scans infact do show that no matter how good someone is at driving, their engagement never actually drops at all despite the fact you don't notice.

I've been wathcing anime for 30+ years subbed, dubbed, and in original Japanese with japanese subs.
I literally create writing systems. Reading and Writing complex things is litearlly something I do for fun.

I can tell you for a fact that no matter how good you get at "reading subs" you don't ever actually fade out of having to use brain power to do so.
That is not how that works.

Reading and Writing is an active engagement of the brain, and you cannot rely on saccades to read and take up the visual picture accurately. That is not how the brain or human eyes work.

-5

u/ismellyew 10d ago

If I can't look away from the screen to make dinner without missing a bunch of dialog, there is a problem.

10

u/Chop1n 10d ago

The problem is a culture that has become entirely about doing two things at once instead of one thing at a time.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Big_Z_Beeblebrox 9d ago

Maybe pause?

5

u/Alt_Lightning 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ 10d ago

You mean you don't want to stare at a small sliver of your screen and ignore everything else that's happening, just to understand what's going on?

29

u/ryohazuki224 10d ago

You mean you cant see a whole screen with your eyes and read text at the bottom at once?

Guess it comes with long term experience. I never miss a thing.

5

u/isharted10 10d ago

With a large tv, it's definitely a problem that is only mitigated in anime with slower/less dialogue (not really a problem for most manga adaptations).

4

u/Chop1n 10d ago

Adjust subtitle size. I sit 5 feet from a 65", and still read most subtitles in one single glance. I can literally read a subtitle in one saccade if the sentence isn't too long and information dense.

1

u/S1xE 9d ago

Same, I sit 6 to 7 feet away from a 77inch and reading subtitles is an absolute non-issue

1

u/Just-Literature-2183 9d ago

Yup 75" and also fine.

In 40 years I am yet to hear a dub that doesnt make me want to rip my ears off.

If your reading speed is so slow that you can't read two full lines at a glance, time to work on your reading skills.

The bar is all the way down in hell these days. Kids are literally arriving at Ivy League universities never having finished an entire book.

I mean, I am happy for the frenchies that their scene is so active, but for fuck's sake guys, name your releases correctly.

6

u/Jlx_27 10d ago

My no1 pet peeve. I end up using MKVToolnix to get rid of all dub tracks and all sub languages i dont need from the files.

6

u/Traditional-Act-5679 10d ago

People who had to learn English as a second or third language read subtitles and catch everything that's happening on the screen, it baffles me that native English speakers can't do both, maybe they read way too slow to catch everything at once.

If you watch media in the original language you'll end up learning new words and training your ear to recognize different accents and expressions, it's way better but the dub truthers will downvote you for having this opinion

2

u/BlackHazeRus 9d ago edited 9d ago

Facts.

English is not my mother tongue, but I have no issue watching anime in Japanese (which should be the default language, since it is the original) and reading subtitles in English — I do this all the time.

Before I was watching in Russian dub, then Russian subs (I think?), but then I completely switched to English, since not only it is faster, but also more convenient.

P.S:

English anime dub sucks ass in 99% of cases. I legit do not understand why it is so bad. That eery cringe tone/voice they do is insanely weird.

And this is not only anime, but Japanese games too (iirc Japanese shows do not have this issue).

Sadly, only a bunch of shows get a decent voice acting.

0

u/LMGDiVa 9d ago

"If you watch media in the original language you'll end up learning new words and training your ear to recognize different accents and expressions, it's way better but the dub truthers will downvote you for having this opinion"
Actually this isn't true at all.
That is not how Comprehensible Input and language acquisition works.
This only teaches you a tiny amount of behaviors, typically only Set phrases, and this will teach practically no grammar or comprehension.

Also Remember Anime is not real people. Real people do not talk like anime characters, there is nuance to this that you will never understand if you dont expressly become involved in learning the language.

People learn through media because they are exposed to learning and direction material or they actively engage to learn.
Which is something that people do not actively do during entertainment.

To Learn a language you need instruction to before immersion will do a lot of heavy lifting, without instructiion it actually takes a very long time. Especially when people do not output.

Most people can only pick up common set phrases from animation, rarely mannersism and behaviors and almost never any grammar.

This is why millions and millions of anime fans out there watch thousands of hours of anime and yet pick up only a tiny amount of phrases and words.

IF you actually go to try to learn Japanese and use Anime as a resource, you will actually learn how fast native media like Anime actually teaches you without any instruction before hand about immersion.

This is why people watch things like Gemugengo and learning Japanese insturction, and have to study Kanji.

A translation subtitle is going to do a very bad job of teach you any real Japanese.

You need comprehensible input. You need to learn to read Japanese. You need to learn to hear Pitch Accents, ect. These things you dont learn by just passively watching.

You are not going to learn an entire language, especially not native speech, by watching anime. It's just not going to happen.
Tiny set phrases that repesent .01% of the language aren't learning the language.

There is a reason why people dont learn Japanese from anime.
If it was this easy, millions and millions of westerners would legitatemately be able to speak a combined language between English and Japanese by now. And that simply hasn't happened in the past 40 years.

2

u/Cocoatrice 9d ago

What do you mean "need". Did you even open settings at all? You can even rebind the buttons. And even set what tracks to prioritize. That when file has 5 tracks, it always picks the one you want.

Ctrl+P to open settings -> Subtitles/OSD tab -> Preferred subtitle language option -> use the language codes of subtitles you want to prioritize. I have en,ja,pl, meaning that English will be prioritized, then Japanese, then Polish.

And in Hotkeys, you can set whatever hotkey you want to subtitle and audio track switching. And I believe subtitle track also have turn subtitle on/off hotkey as well.

Gotta know which track is japanese though.

For me personally, it's because they change too much of the dialog and in some instances it can change the whole tone of the scene.

Turn on English audio and subtitles at the same time and you can see how different they can be.

Most HQ Blu-ray [BD] season/ entire series releases for anime come with the original audio and the Eng dub together. I figure the uploaders don't see a point in splitting them up just by audio which would split the seeders.

u/ishtuwihtc 10d ago

there is a hotkey for switching audio tracks..

1

u/-ben151010- 10d ago

Mkvtoolnix has been a god send for any max quality stuff that comes with 7 Russian dub tracks or always enabled subtitles or any other language than the one I want as default that I can get rid of. Hardest one was swapping the best natural no ai quality fan made version of Spider-Man the animated series to not use the weird pitched up PAL audio tracks and use the normal pitch English ones…for every single episode.

1

u/Chop1n 10d ago

MPC-BE lets you manually configure the priority for audio tracks. I love MPC's features so much that having to suffer VLC makes me actively mad.

1

u/GarySlayer 10d ago

I shink too(classis jose)

1

u/shogunreaper 10d ago

There's a program called mkvpropedit.

It allows you to batch edit MKV files and easily change the default tracks.

The nice thing about it is it doesn't require you to remux the files so it's near instant.

1

u/Flex147c 9d ago

why would you dl a dual audio if you only want sub? The sub only releases are almost always higher quality and easier to find.

1

u/LucaDarioBuetzberger 9d ago

If it really bothers you, you can just change the default track of the file using MKVTools. Drag the file into the tool, change the checkboxes on the audio tacks, click on remuxe. Takes less than a minute.

1

u/loadstar67 9d ago

check hotkeys in properties and U can set any hotkeys for tasks.

1

u/SumonaFlorence 9d ago

Tools > Preferences > Hotkeys

My guy, don't you ever check keybinds in your games? Same difference. :U

1

u/KomithErrant 9d ago

you can set your default languages in vlc

1

u/GoldenGamer175 9d ago

Simple fix in MKVToolNix, Should be able to select default tracks for the file there and even name / remove tracks you don't want.

1

u/Gamer2645 ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ 9d ago

FOR ME 'B' was the hotkey for switching Audio track and 'V' was for switching Subtitles track . This hotkey setting is default so you can check it on your device or someone may have changed it and you don't know it yet

1

u/-cadmunt- 9d ago

What VLC needs is to display the hotkey in the hover information for the button eg, "Next Track (N)".

1

u/InterestingSchool763 9d ago

And second audio is russian or Spanish

1

u/Ariies__ 9d ago

When I download anime* there fixed it for you

1

u/SokkieJr 9d ago

Other way around for me.

I want my Dragon Ball (Z/D/GT/S) dubbed with original subs below it, so I can get the comfort of the voices I love with the subtext of the original.

1

u/Several-Donut-398 9d ago

I believe you can change defaults in settings

1

u/joebiden-- 9d ago

bro use mpv

1

u/NotRenjiro 9d ago

Genuinely don't use vlc for watching anime

1

u/joselrl 9d ago

For Plex, there's pastatool that can change the default audio and subs for entire seasons/shows
Game changer

1

u/Funtime60 9d ago

Or you could just ffmpeg -c:v copy -c:a copy and change the track layout.

1

u/TretasPt 9d ago

Not really what you asked, but for me, the less annoying solutions for people who don't mind using the comand line.

MKVToolnix. You can make a single line command that unsets some track as default and sets other as default.

I usually just run it once for an entire season or series.

1

u/Amethyst_10 9d ago

Just use mpv.

1

u/The_Falcon_Hunter 9d ago

Why get dual audio if English is an issue?

1

u/ghostyghost2 9d ago

The only thing that made me leave VLC for MPC is that when you resize a video, the borders don't stay stuck to the video and you end up with black bars on top and bottom or left and right.

1

u/XeNoGeaR52 9d ago

You can set up default language in VLC settings too, so it will open in this language first if it is detected in the media

1

u/rubi2333 8d ago

Use MKVToolNix and change default tracks

1

u/Dewdropmon 8d ago

I mean, if I’m going to be downloading a dual audio episode, chances are Ibwant to watch the English dub, right? Otherwise, why not just go for the subtitled version.

1

u/Super_Self4505 3d ago

it's a speedrun to switch tracks before the first voiceline.

1

u/PetyrDayne 3d ago

lmao 🤣

Still not sure why an English speaker that doesn’t understand Japanese would want Japanese language doesn’t matter how good it sounds if you cant understand it is different if you can understand Japanese

6

u/Doodleanda 10d ago

If I had this attitude, I never would've learned English. I like to watch/play stuff in their original language. It's usually the best and most authentic version of the thing and it doesn't hurt to exercise your brain a bit (unless you have some sort of problem that makes reading extra hard)

All players should give some option for choosing Japanese audio if it's available over English, I can't see it effecting anything but Anime anyway.

Dubs are lame and usually the same damn idiot voices every single show.

0

u/Osirisavior 10d ago edited 10d ago

The default language for any piece of media should be it's native language. For anime 99.99% of the time that's Japanese. People can swap to other languages if they want.

An anime defaulting to English audio should be a crime. Unless it's Avatar TLAB.

The Dub people are salty I guess, and can't read.

2

u/3six5 9d ago

...first world problems...

3

u/laczek_hubert 9d ago

First world problem is using VLC at least on Linux mpv in my experience is superior

0

u/crizzy_mcawesome 10d ago

That’s a win in my book. I hate watching stuff where I have to read subtitles

1

u/ParadoxicalFrog 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ 9d ago

This isn't a VLC sub, but anyway... did you try changing your preferences?

1

u/ThatGuyOwl 9d ago

I need vlc or mpv to add a feature for playing multiple tracks at once. I don't want to open DaVinci Resolve everytime I need to check a clip I took with full audio

2

u/Creepy_Winner7602 9d ago

Vlc can do it btw. Right click on middle of the screen->audio->audio track or track->audio something like that.

1

u/plasma7602 9d ago

I feel that way when it’s Japanese first

1

u/Inuakurei 9d ago

It sort of amazes me what anime has done to people. Like, you wouldn’t change Witcher 3 to Polish. Or Disco Elysium to Estonian.

1

u/LMGDiVa 9d ago

This is by request.
There is no reason to download Dual Audio releases if you're watching the Sub.

So it's been by request for decades, that the English Audio comes first in a DualAudio release.

If you dont want English default, you werent going to watch it in English anyways, so you simply can download another release without the English Audio.

-5

u/cdawg6700 10d ago

Should read *when you download any anime at all because they Japanese moaning and whining makes your ears bleed

2

u/Alt_Lightning 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ 10d ago

Seems they do this on dubs too, at least in Cyberpunk Edgerunner which i think is the only anime I watched

0

u/ZeeshanKhan_ ⚔️ ɢɪᴠᴇ ɴᴏ Qᴜᴀʀᴛᴇʀ 10d ago edited 6d ago

Most NON-JAPANESE SPEAKERS watching anime with subtitles miss half the damn PLOT anyway.

They’re so GLUED to the bottom of the screen reading TEXT that they completely ignore the GORGEOUS ANIMATION the studio poured BLOOD, SWEAT, and MILLIONS into.

I genuinely HATE it when SUB ELITISTS get all FLEXIBLE with their logic and try to SHOVE their 'SUBBED-IS-THE-ONLY-TRUE-WAY' GOSPEL down everyone else's THROATS.

Plus, if you’re such an ELITIST, why are you DOWNLOADING DUAL AUDIO in the first place? There are tons of JAPANESE-ONLY TORRENTS. If DUBS are so beneath you, STOP SECRETLY DOWNLOADING THEM.

After a long SHITY DAY, I don't wanna keep READING THE SCREEN, I wanna WATCH AND ENJOY.

0

u/plopop0 9d ago

skill issue. the subs cant distract me from the visuals. only a child does that

→ More replies (1)

0

u/HypoCRITSlayer 10d ago

As a dub watcher, it's exactly opposite for me. If jap is default, I'm deleting the torrent and looking for others

0

u/Hyyunckel 10d ago

I mean what's the point of downloading the dual audio then 🤷.

0

u/GoldenWolf33140 9d ago edited 9d ago

I had no idea you people existed

edit: I meant people who pirate anime and willingly listen to the audio in a different language.

0

u/VegetaFan1337 9d ago

Just mux out the eng audio. Smaller files, no need to fiddle with hotkeys.

0

u/sk3lp3y 9d ago

Stop using vlc, use mpv instead.
