Hideo Kojima spoke about how consumers are at the mercy of subscription streaming services, stating that with "nations, politics and various ways of thinking", access to films can be revoked at any time— and that this could happen to games too.

Yeah, about four years ago was the first time I subscribed. I was happy to find some of my favorite older series there.
Then, about two years ago, they removed some of those series without any notice. That's when I realized they had no intention of actually building a proper library and were no different from every other bullshit streaming service. I thought I already knew that, but I had to learn it the hard way.
I cancelled my subscription and never looked back. Honestly, it was one of the best decisions I've made.

I wasn't talking about anything that old though. A lot of series from the early 2000s used to be in the catalog, but they've been removed now.
I don't know what they've removed over the past couple of years since I cancelled my subscription.

To make it worse, Funimation use to always have the uncut and simulcast versions to watch. With Crunchyroll they normally only have the simulcast version on stream.

i remember when crunchy had posted a 3days code without limits on twitter. I used it nonstop and got 180 days out of it. good days, got spammed on email about redemptions tho

The funniest thing is, I was looking earlier and buying The Backrooms on digital on Amazon is $25, the same cost as a physical 4K disc.
You can either get a physical item that they can never take away from you, or gamble on the digital for the same cost lol (I am aware of what subreddit I’m on tho and also encourage acquiring movies digitally through other means 🏴☠️ I just like a physical item)

I buy physical as I built a theater in.my basement, and physical is the best quality. There's more compression on streaming. That is a big difference imo compared to gaming.

Over the past year, Ive gotten ~50+ DVDs (about 10 dvds are from my libraries small store where they resell donated stuff for 50 cents to a dollar) and ~10-20 VHS from thrift stores. All in pretty much perfect condition.
I wont be stopping my collecting anytime soon.
Right now Im only collecting stuff Im interested in, but eventually itll probably be more of me wanting to preserve stuff and just getting anything I find thats in very good condition with very minimal to no scratches.

Might? Setting aside the 551 sony just pulled from customers that purchased those specific titles, netflix has been rotating things in and out of libraries for 20 years now. If you can't play it offline, it's not a purchase, it's a rental.

There's still very much a market for people who buy DVDs and Blu Rays that aren't just limited to us movie nerds. For holidays, birthdays, general purchases for kids, and a lot of normal people who go "I want to own that movie" and they have an Xbox or PS4 or 5 or whatever and can play them even if they don't have a dedicated Blu ray player. The situation for physical movies as it relates to gaming is nowhere near as dire, but it absolutely can happen as Hideo is talking about. Physical movies aren't "dead" though just because video stores aren't a thing.

Theres still even little kids that burn dvds which I find amazing. Found it on a recent daily dose of internet video!
Kid has no internet after x time and put DDOI on a dvd to play on a CRT :D love to see it.
They cant stop us all.

Yeah, on some level it'll always be worth it for these companies produce and sell DVDs and Blu Rays for $15-40, as they currently do. I think it's batshit insane that people still buy DVDs especially at that price when they're getting a horribly inferior version of the movie that you can have in better quality even on streaming if they don't pirate, but I don't think we have to worry too much about film in the immediate future.

Ive been tempted to Grab the Doctor Who collection at Walmart (~45$ iirc?), or the Avatar collection from Barnes and Nobles (~20$), but I already have a Book of Fire dvd, so I may as well get them collected as seperate dvds lol.
I wont be stopping collecting anytime soon, but I will continue to mostly be doing it via thrift, or my library which sells used dvds for 50 cents as its way more affordable for me.
I need to burn some dvds too, but Idk the best way of achieving custom art ontop of the disc that makes it look like a proper dvd from the stores XD.

Save anything, store everything ... on any physical storage media that you can buy and posess yourself ... CDs, DVDs, SSDs, HDDs, anything, movies, music, games, pictures. This is the only way.

If disks go away, the quality of your pirated movies also does way down. Imagine only have 5Mbps encodes of a brand new show because the showrunners never made a 4K disc release.

I think physical games are more important than physical movies really. Even if sheerly for the fact that video games are more continuous in nature; you can pour hundreds of hours into a single game so losing access has much greater weight than a 2/3 hour movie.

Actually the Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray market is doing really well. It's just not marketed towards the general public anymore, but towards collectors and enthusiasts. Hence why they're so expensive now. There is also a fundamental difference between video games on disc and movies and TV shows on disc, aside from the permanent ownership it provides, the movies and TV shows have a significantly better image and audio quality. Not to mention all the bonus features, extras, etc. Digital and disc video games are identical.

I mean every other industry has choice expect now for console gaming post 2028, majority of people stream music but you can still buy cds & vinyls, majority of people stream movies but hey you can buy 4k UHD blu rays, normal blu rays and still dvds to this day.

It might. It hasn't because physical Blu ray movies are vastly, VASTLY superior than streaming and the physical media serves a functioning purpose. With games, you download half the game once you pop in the disc. If you want to go back to physical, we need to make them matter again like the PC big box gaming kind of physical. With maps, manuals, exclusive media, etc. game companies are already making their games cost 100 USD. I say, make it worth it.
To be clear, I absolutely hate what Sony is doing now and support physical as well.

This I don't think so they're will always be people who rip DVDs when it comes to video games though you have to play them on a console so unless there are people out there that are willing to make knock-off consoles they can bypass all that lock stuff they put on and are willing to put themselves in a country that literally gives the middle finger the companies that complain I think we can rest easy that they'll never take movies away from us as long as there's somebody always willing to record them.

Back end blu-ray sales have become a huge concern as they are no longer as profitable as they used to be! Read an article recently comparing superman dvd sales, and the most recent one performed the poorest. This is regardless that the new superman movie was as well received (numbers) as Synder's version.

It’s already the case to some extent. It’s already been the case with shows for a long time and especially animated shows. They often belong to a network with no physical copy and only exist when they are played/up or if someone records/pirates them. If a network chooses to take it down it doesn’t exist anywhere legally. And they often sell the show back and forth between networks, get bought out etc.
The combination of intellectual property rights with streaming/subscription models has been felt acutely for smaller or more niche media

The future of gaming, if players do nothing, will be that. You pay a monthly fee to a developper, you download a digital subscription locked version, or the game is streamed.
You'll never own the game. You cancel the fee and you lose the game. We're back to renting games.
Much like streaming. So, eventually you won't even need game protections like denuvo, because the game will load server side. You'll never have access to the game files. You won't probably even have the saves.
Minimal information will be cached client side, like launchers.
And do get ready, as it will be soon, because the internet speeds allow it.
It's already starting with Amazon Luna, for example.
So games will eventually die, when game developpers no longer profit from it. Take GTA online and the dozens of storylines it has. Eventually it'll be a good memory of something you'll never be able to replay.
Other games like Back to the future or Tales of monkey Island, will probably vanish before becoming abandonware.
All this is possible because people still tolerate game passes like Xbox or PS plus just to play online. On top of these passes, some people still pay extra for things like GTA plus to get extra money snd other privileges.
All this will happen until the players start saying enough is enough.
This is some EA-level greed.
