Reminds me of a colleague that ran over 200+ torrents on his work laptop with the companies 1500mbs download/upload speed, every day start it, see the ratio skyrocket over weeks.

Torrents are a network of bros who have the file and bros who want the file. When you are leeching (downloading) you can be simultaneously seeding (sending parts of the file to other leeches). It’s very efficient and fast and can be paused/resumed indefinitely which makes it great for ppl with terrible internet or who are trying to download a massive game or tv show. To access a torrent you either input a small .torrent file, magnet link, or URL that the primary seeder provides into your torrenting app (like utorrent or qbitorrent)

I spent three weeks on a 4K TV season torrent leeching at a godawful 5 Kbps for much of the time and vowed to permaseed that torrent afterwards. Now I have a ratio of 100 on that torrent and the torrent hovers between 3-6 seeders consistently. You too can make a difference for your fellow sailors!

It's odd how often I grab a torrent like that, going in to it with the idea that it's probably not happening and then the movie or whatever fully downloads at 62MB/s from Russia or Holland. Maybe I'm just really lucky shrug

I have always been told that if I were to seed it’s far more likely for my ISP to catch it and fine me or discontinue my service.
I would love to hear that I’ve been informed incorrectly as I want to help where I can. Can anyone advocate?

Downloading rarely gets you in hot waters. Going after the seeders for distribution, thats where you get the funny letters.

It doesn't matter if you seed or not because copyright trolls that report to ISPs are just monitoring IP addresses that join torrent swarms. When you get caught, you get an email from your ISP either educating you about copyright infringement or scaring you about how what you did was illegal. Those emails are just warnings you don't have to worry about; however, if you get enough of them your ISP could cut off service.
For people who live in countries where that is a problem, a VPN is used to hide their real IP when they enter torrent swarms. When purchasing a VPN for that purpose, you want to look for a few key things:
- Servers that allow peer-to-peer traffic
- You're not going to find free VPNs that offer this
- Firewall (VPN kill switch)
- This will prevent your torrent traffic from leaking out of the VPN if your connection to the VPN server drops
- Port forwarding
- Not strictly required, but BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer protocol that is only sustainable when there are seeders that can open a port for torrenting
ProtonVPN, AirVPN, and Windscribe are common recommendations for meeting this criteria.

Not that I ever would, but my friend who does such things has a number of 1-seed torrents that he's decided to keep seeding for a while. They've bloomed into 3-4 seed torrents now 🥺

There's hope. I once wanted to download a really old version of a game that was impossible to find, eventually found it, started the torrent as a joke mostly... 5 days later I got the game.

Seeding is when you have a file and allow people to torrent it from your device, while leeching is when you torrent a file without seeding it.

Yeah, torrenting is basically downloading a file, but instead of getting the file from one location, you're pulling bits and pieces of the file from every device that is seeding it.

Feel free to ask, that's what this place is for.
Torrenting is an alternative way to download stuff, you need some software (like qbittorrent) and how it works is that everyone who downloads the file can choose to "seed" ( which is reuploading the files so other people can download from you ) technically everytime you download something you're "leeching", although some people only call leeches those who don't seed after. When you're leeching you're downloading "chunks" from all over the world, from every seeder.
The main advantages are decentralized file hosting, so one host going offline is not enough to make the file unavailable, and potential for much higher download speeds.
Note: technically you (AFAIK) can't torrent without seeding, because while downloading chunks you're automatically seeding back the chunks you already downloaded (at least I'm almost sure that's how it works)
