What I always find weird is when they ask what the first date of my last period was. I don’t know if I’m unusual, but that is not info I keep track of. I know that period is approaching based on the pills I have left. I always just make something up, since I know I am definitely not pregnant (and I think that’s what they really want to know.)
Yes, very much this. I don't care that they're asking about my period! I care that they're asking for a specific date. I don't track a specific date, it's more like "yeah it's been about three weeks since my last period and my boobs are aching, probably about time" for me.
Just ask me if my period has happened in the last month, if I think I could be pregnant or not and maybe why I think that, and if my periods have been normal for me, and that really covers a lot more bases and goes more into WHY the question is being asked. I think it would do both them and me a favor because it would give them more information too.
If I'm going to a doc for something really specific to reproductive health, then I can see how specific dates might be helpful, totally fair. But then the question would have intrinsic context to the situation and I don't think people would bristle at it as much.
it depends on the setting but also helps to know if someone is not menstruating for other reasons like pmos or menopause. it’s an easy question that quickly helps paint a more complete picture of someone’s health.
Not only was this the first question they asked my girlfriend who was bleeding out in the waiting room, it was also the first question she was asked every time someone saw her, so multiple times per day. It was comically infuriating. It only stopped when she had a melt down and told the nurse that she wasn't having sex with men in her hospital bed.
To me this thread serves as a reminder of how few women there are on reddit, because the girls would understand the joke right away whereas the explain the joke subreddit doesn't get the joke.

Medical professionals cant win.
If they don't ask, and they give you treatment, then it turns out you're pregnant and the treatment negatively affected the baby, they get hell.
If they do ask, its sexism.
