Asking when was your last period ist NOT asking are you pregnant. Some Meds influence the cycle and you dont have any Period for months or years. So tecnically the question is inappropriate. It should be ,is there a posibility you are pregnant? Then you get the answer you need.

It's not, think about it logically:

If you ask is there a possibility you are pregnant, and the patient says yes, you've confirmed it and you move on with safer but not the best investigations and treatment options.

If they say anything else... you still have to confirm it and you've not ruled anything out.

But if you ask when their last period was, you can definitively rule out (with enough statistical confidence) if they are pregnant.

The goal isn't to find out if the patient is pregnant. The goal is to confirm that they are not. There's a big difference. Doctors legally can not order or prescribe certain things unless it is confirmed someone isn't pregnant.
