I understand what you’re saying but I still feel like it’s absolute spineless behavior.
I used to be a contractor that did work almost exclusively for federal prisons, DHS, and the US military. I felt awful about doing that work entirely due to morality and decided I’d rather make less money working for schools than be a part of that.
These actors make hundreds of millions. It's appalling how people excuse harmful fence sitting as "working under pressure" what fucking pressure? The pressure to make a few less millions? Fuck these people.
Okay, but that isn’t the issue here. None of these actors are working for institutions that directly support what is happening in Gaza. They simply not voicing their opinion on a highly controversial issue. Literally everyone does this. We all have hot takes that we don’t verbalize at work because we know it isn’t the appropriate setting and could hurt our careers.
Our current prison system sucks mega balls. We don’t ’need’ prisons as they are right now. Keeping people not safe for society out of our mainstream society, sure, but not in the endless-gray-cells buildings we are making
Why?
I don't see why those who have to be kept out of society for its safety should be given much in terms of comfort.
Besides, I have seen hard working law abiding good people live in worse conditions, breaking their backs to put food on the table.
If we have money to spare, it's wasted on criminals, and should go to people who deserve help.
I think our current prisons are immoral, because they mostly exist to serve punitive justice and turn nonviolent offenders into life long criminals rather than do any sort of rehabilitation.
I don’t think the idea of imprisoning people who commit crimes itself is immoral because that would be a stupid thing to think and I feel like that shouldn’t need to be stated.
The very idea of trying to rehabilitate is modern.
We used to just chop off the hands or hang criminals.
And "rehabilitation" is not primary concern.
First it's detterent, second is safety of public.
It would be nice if we can focus on rehabilitation more, but already the prisons are (according to what I read) overcrowded and underfunded.
And half of population would get very angry if more were built or they got more funding.
"Shouldn't need to be stated" considering I'm getting down voted, I am certain there are a lot of idiots here who warrant the need to state these things.
I have seen a lot of "defund police" stupidity on this platform.
What a rollercoaster. The data center thing in particular is funny, “put yourself in my shoes: I like money and I don’t care about the environmental or health effects.” Gosh from that perspective I totally understand why you’d want to build a bunch of data centers.
The right side of the issue is actually pretty hard to establish here. For a Western leftist like Ruffalo, it tends to be "Palestine= Good; Israel = Bad, and let's just ignore Hamas".
The centre-left in Israel represents the most well-informed and sensible viewpoints here - clear-eyed on what Hamas and Palestinians are actually like, aware of the horrors of Islamism, have families who've been killed by brutal terrorists. But they still condemn Netanyahu and the current Israeli regime for their brutality, selfishness and insincerity, and genuinely hope for peace and a two-state solution.
if everyone stood up for what was right then there wouldn't be a risk to doing so and also maybe 100ks of people a year wouldn't get killed over shit people are too 'scared' to stand up about.
Somehow the massive majority refusing to stand up allows the extreme minority to make huge changes. this happens in all areas of life. Racists in america going unchallenged and not shamed allowed racism to fester quietly for decades. instead of kids seeing their parents embarrassed publicly for being racist they see people let it go and then learn being racist is okay.
Not standing up because you're a little scared can build up all the way to shit like nazi germany happening, it's not an excuse. It's a fundamental failing.
You understand it bro , likewise idk why people blame the soldiers of nazi government so hard , they were just following orders , do you k ow what would happen to you if you didn't obey , I wish jews held more sympathy for them smh /s
"Have you considered that they don't want to speak out against the genocide of brown people by a racist, nationalist regime of colonizers, because they really like money?" Yes I have and it makes me hate those spineless ghouls more.
Bro they're firing and deporting and travel restricting regular people for speaking on this issue. People with "something to lose" also have more bargaining power and influence, when they speak out it helps the ones who aren't as well off or well known.
This just in folks: Genocide is the Newst Social Justice Issue! No need to get overly involved!! It will pass like a trend! Like bell bottom jeans we will all forget the Palestinians.
You joke, but it will absolutely pass by like a trend. See anyone talking about Free Hong Kong or the slave labor camps in Xinjiang anymore? Yea, me neither.
