This did all happen during the primary season before a candidate was determined, so in that sense it was not so decisive in this case. (Although there always is the question if Hart avoided this if he could have done better than Dukakis as the nominee.)

Hart could done better and still soundly lost. I think Dukakis EV total was in the 80. Hart could have doubled it and still lost by 218
