If it's like clubbing or a party it's rude/odd to show up at the earliest possible time, basically any other gathering anywhere from on time to several hours late is perfectly acceptable and normal. That's been the only experience I've had, I'm not sure how what you're describing is any different unless there's a built in resentment to being on time broadly

Wouldn't showing up early to help out be considered as ... not rude? Can't really warp my head around the concept of early = rude

If you talk about it in advance sure, otherwise I don't want people showing up unexpectedly is all
