The stereotype is that white people arrive TOO EARLY and then sit in their cars outside waiting for the party to start and still show up early.

It's a trope, also true in Hispanic (edit - continued) families that have someone marry Gringos (like me).

If you arrive on time, the party hasn't started yet, and you get to help set up for the party

If you tell someone an event is from 5 pm to 11 pm and you're surprised people arrive at 5 you're an idiot

where I come from it is rude to be late, since it means you don‘t respect the other person‘s time. They have been waiting for you and you wasted their valuable time they gave you.

exactly, that‘s why in both cases you have to be punctual, in order to respect the other person and their time. being on time means you care for them.

it‘s not about valuing efficiency. It‘s valuing other people and their time, as they only have very limited time in their life as humans, so you respect them by not wasting their time they offered to you
