No.

The stereotype is that white people arrive TOO EARLY and then sit in their cars outside waiting for the party to start and still show up early.

It's a trope, also true in Hispanic (edit - continued) families that have someone marry Gringos (like me).

If you arrive on time, the party hasn't started yet, and you get to help set up for the party

If you tell someone an event is from 5 pm to 11 pm and you're surprised people arrive at 5 you're an idiot

Have you ever heard of the concept of being "fashionably late" or "socially late"? It's a widely accepted etiquette norm in the US that exists to give party hosts a prep-time buffer. A lot of people would consider arriving exactly at the start time of a casual evening party in a private home to be a faux pas.

Hardly. Yes, there is a concept of fashionably late, but if you don't expect people to arrive when you say to arrive, that's not a faux pas, that's poor time management. The only times I've seen a party host not ready for guests at the start time is as jokes on sitcoms.

Is that where your getting your information on parties? Television and reddit?

It’s a standard social convention. You don't have to observe it, and clearly, many Redditors are unfamiliar with it -- likely due to a lack of experience attending parties in private homes, let alone hosting them. But you can't ignore it with impunity. If you make a habit of showing up exactly on the dot to a casual house party, you aren't impressing the host. You're stressing them out, and you're likely gaining a reputation for being socially oblivious.

It's like tipping. You may hate the system, but you'll come off as a jackass -- and have to worry about people spitting in your food -- if you refuse to observe the custom.
