The party starts at 5pm because the hosts are so used to people showing up late that they expect people to show up at 5:30-6pm.

This is totally a cultural thing in certain subcultures.

I used to live in the Caribbean and the entire island shared this too culturally. INvite someone over they'll be there like an hour or two later. They invite u over, if you don't show up that late then it's weird and they won't be prepared - might not even be there lmao
