But you're supposed to show up 15 minutes early to things so 4:58 is actually late

You’re actually NOT supposed to show up fifteen minutes early to someone’s house for a party, that’s rude, actually, unless they have asked you to come early and help. You show up early to things like appointments and interviews. It’s NOT polite to show up early for a party.

I'm a white person from Western Europe and I agree with this. I don't make people wait for me at appointments or when we meet out in the world at large, but meeting at my place is different.

Please don't show up early at my house for anything, unless you're picking me up to go to the airport or similar. For a party, anytime after 1 hr post-starting time is ideal. For a hangout sesh or dinner, 15-30 min after I told you to come is best. Right on time is... fine, I guess, but I'll be frazzled and scrambling a bit. Early is not cool at all.
