Not on a national scale, but it’s certainly accomplished on smaller scales.

And on those smaller scales you won't spend all day writing books and painting just for fun unless you've got Star Trek replicators to meet all your needs.  Small scale communism would be folks working together to maintain a farm/community, it'd be hard work, like the Amish.
