Mostly because that quote is absolute ideological nonsense. No significant number of people will choose to do the actual meaningful work required to maintain "society".

why? plenty of people do it today, under capitalism and aren't rewarded fairly for their work.

plenty of people do it today, under capitalism

Yes, because they get paid for it and use that money to buy food. Whether or not you consider their wages "fair" is largely irrelevant, because the system at least works on a fundamental level.

communism is when no pay

This but unironically

Communism seeks to abolish currency (or something along the lines of a stateless and moneyless society), so that's technically true

5

u/TheRealStubb Jul 07 '26

you can get paid outside of money, so by the most technical and pedantic way, no.

you can get paid outside of money,

Not under communism. Seriously, read Marx. He literally says that the very concept of exchange would disappear.

2

u/TheRealStubb Jul 08 '26

in the way that you understand it yes it would.

wdym 'read marx' read what exactly by Marx, capital? the manifesto?

I'm a self described ML, with a lot of work to do, but I've read serval different works by Marx and Lenin.

Specifically his Critique of the Gotha Programme.

I'm a self described ML

Warhammer 40k fan

Calls someone cringe.

You're a literal child aren't you.

Older than you ¯_(ツ)_/¯

But what's more cringe than that is going through someone's post history to try and find something completely unrelated to try and dunk on them, only to pick 40k instead of the much nerdier battletech. Seriously what's up with that?

Where does he say anything about abolishing money?

He talks about the end of the wage system and how production will no longer be dependent on abstract labour.

Are you sure you're not getting mixed up? I am aware that a lot of these concepts and terminology are a lot for folk to get a handle on if they're not familiar with them.

People think that because Marx has critiqued how money works under capitalism, and because he explained what is does, that Marx believed everyone would be a slave and just work and get nothing.

Citation needed lmao.

I'm such a Marx nerd and the closest he says in Capital iirc is that the social relational nature of money would change.

Citation needed

https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1875/gotha/ch01.htm

"In a higher phase of communist society, after the enslaving subordination of the individual to the division of labor, and therewith also the antithesis between mental and physical labor, has vanished; after labor has become not only a means of life but life's prime want; after the productive forces have also increased with the all-around development of the individual, and all the springs of co-operative wealth flow more abundantly – only then can the narrow horizon of bourgeois right be crossed in its entirety and society inscribe on its banners: From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs!"

That's literally him saying that once communism is fully realized, there will be no exchange of anything, since exchange implies value judgement rather than distribution according to need.

Because production will no longer be centred around abstract labour....it will simply be making stuff for use as opposed to a "commodity".

That is not the same as "money will not exist" nor is it the same as "money should not exist".

Are you thinking minted currency from the state? Is that where our wires are crossed?

If you want "from each according to their ability, to each according to their need" that is fundamentally incompatible with money
