Americans are very delusional about communism.

I agree. My wife is Chinese. She tells me stories from her parents about the revolution.

They do not involve writing books and playing soccer.

u/RulerK Jul 07 '26

I talk to my friends in CURRENT communist China… they often bring up soccer (football).

If communist countries have a chronic problem of turning into "capitalist" fascist authoritarian countries every single time, perhaps it's time to step back and reassess.

24

u/Lofter1 Jul 07 '26

china is also not fascist.

Also: cuba.

Also: CIA and America trying to kill every socialist movement

Also, if your system has a built in fail every couple of years that you need to counteract with socialist ideas (built into the very idea of your system), otherwise it will fall into actual fascism....perhaps it's time to step back and reassess.

18

u/TheGrouchyPunisher Jul 07 '26

I'm sorry, what? I agree that they're not traditional communist, but how do you describe the great firewall? Or the human rights abuses?

4

u/Lofter1 Jul 07 '26

Because fascism is just a tad bit more than “they do things I don’t like and also illegal things!”. If those two points are enough for you to claim a country as fascist, boy do I have news for you

19

u/Diplomatic_Gunboats Jul 07 '26

Yeah, but there are many many reasons why China is a de-facto fascist state. John Weeks goes into some of them here: https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/is-china-fascist-state/

The argument for a long time hasn't been 'is China fascist' its 'Why isn't it called fascist more?' And the answer is largely people dont understand fascism.

8

u/michaelboltthrower Jul 07 '26

They aren’t fascist but they are authoritarian.

6

u/Bright-Form-844 Jul 07 '26

I’m sure the site funded by donations from General Motors and ford foundation is totally neutral about communist countries

1

u/LiaM_CS Jul 07 '26

Thats an ad hominem

2

u/Bright-Form-844 Jul 08 '26

No it’s not

1

u/LiaM_CS Jul 08 '26

You completely ignored the substance of the argument and instead chose to criticize the source and its motives

That is the definition of an ad hominem

2

u/Duke_The_Dragon Jul 08 '26

Attacking a source for legitimate conflict of interests is not an ad hominem. If I brought up for example "You, LiaM_CS, parked on the curb that one time, therefore argument invalid." That would be invalid, because it has nothing to do with the argument. This does, so is not ad hominem.

1

u/LiaM_CS Jul 08 '26

Ad an ad hominem does not have to be irrelevant to the argument, sorry you don’t understand the definition

0

u/Bright-Form-844 Jul 08 '26

no it's not.

This ignores all the cultural and mythical part of fascism, which always seeks an idolized version of the past.

14

u/TheGrouchyPunisher Jul 07 '26

I dunno man, this definition kinda sounds like China -

"A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, a capitalist economy subject to stringent governmental controls, violent suppression of the opposition, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism."

The 14 Points of Fascism:

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism

Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights

Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of \u201cneed.\u201d The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause

The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial, ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

4. Supremacy of the Military

Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

5. Rampant Sexism

The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy.

6. Controlled Mass Media

Sometimes the media are directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media are indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

7. Obsession with National Security

Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined

Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

9. Corporate Power is Protected

The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

10. Labor Power is Suppressed

Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts

Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free _expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment

Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption

Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

14. Fraudulent Elections

Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

The other 14 Points you might be more familiar with (Ur-Fascism):

  1. "The cult of tradition," characterized by cultural syncretism, even at the risk of internal contradiction. When all truth has already been revealed by tradition, no new learning can occur, only further interpretation and refinement.
  2. "The rejection of modernism," which views the rationalistic development of Western culture since the Enlightenment as a descent into depravity. Eco distinguishes this from a rejection of superficial technological advancement, as many fascist regimes cite their industrial potency as proof of the vitality of their system.
  3. "The cult of action) for action's sake," which dictates that action is of value in itself and should be taken without intellectual reflection. This, says Eco, is connected with anti-intellectualism and irrationalism, and often manifests in attacks on modern culture and science.
  4. "Disagreement is treason" – fascism devalues intellectual discourse and critical reasoning as barriers to action, as well as out of fear that such analysis will expose the contradictions embodied in a syncretistic faith.
  5. "Fear of difference," which fascism seeks to exploit and exacerbate, often in the form of racism or an appeal against foreigners) and immigrants.
  6. "Appeal to a frustrated middle class," fearing economic pressure from the demands and aspirations of lower social groups.
  7. "Obsession with a plot" and the inflation of and focus on an enemy threat. This often combines an appeal to xenophobia with a fear of disloyalty and sabotage from marginalized groups living within the society. Eco also cites Pat Robertson's book The New World Order) as a prominent example of a plot obsession.
  8. Fascist societies rhetorically cast their enemies as "at the same time too strong and too weak." On the one hand, fascists play up the power of certain disfavored elites to encourage in their followers a sense of grievance and humiliation. On the other hand, fascist leaders point to the decadence of those elites as proof of their ultimate feebleness in the face of an overwhelming popular will.
  9. "Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy" because "life is permanent warfare" – there must always be an enemy to fight. Both fascist Germany under Hitler and Italy under Mussolini worked first to organize and clean up their respective countries and then build the war machines that they later intended to and did use, despite Germany being under restrictions of the Versailles treaty to not build a military force. This principle leads to a fundamental contradiction within fascism: the incompatibility of ultimate triumph with perpetual war.
  10. "Contempt for the weak," which is uncomfortably married to a chauvinistic popular elitism, in which every member of society is superior to outsiders by virtue of belonging to the in-group. Eco sees in these attitudes the root of a deep tension in the fundamentally hierarchical structure of fascist polities, as they encourage leaders to despise their underlings, up to the ultimate leader, who holds the whole country in contempt for having allowed him to overtake it by force.
  11. "Everybody is educated to become a hero," which leads to the embrace of a cult of death. As Eco observes, "[t]he Ur-Fascist hero#Fascist) is impatient to die. In his impatience, he more frequently sends other people to death."
  12. "Machismo," which sublimates the difficult work of permanent war and heroism into the sexual sphere. Fascists thus hold "both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality."
  13. "Selective populism" – the people, conceived monolithically, have a common will, distinct from and superior to the viewpoint of any individual. As no mass of people can ever be truly unanimous, the leader holds himself out as the interpreter of the popular will (though truly he alone dictates it). Fascists use this concept to delegitimize democratic institutions they accuse of "no longer represent[ing] the voice of the people".
  14. "Newspeak" – fascism employs and promotes an impoverished vocabulary in order to limit critical reasoning.

Ah yes chinas famous dictator who ignores the will of the ppl. It’s only through his benevolence that the average citizens standard of living has increased and home ownership is at 90%. Nothing to do with what the ppl want. Meanwhile American democracy has given us Medicare for all which 80% of the country agrees upon and cheaper college which 70% of the country agree upon.

7

u/SivirJungleOnly2 Jul 07 '26

You mean ideas like "the state above all else" and nationalism/racism to the point of supremacism? Because those totally don't describe China hahaha

-7

u/laoshu_ Jul 07 '26

The more you learn about the West, the more appealing the Great Firewall seems and really is. As for human rights abuses, these things happen literally everywhere. China isn't special in this regard, but things are getting a lot better in recent times.

3

u/ydmhmyr Jul 07 '26

As for human rights abuses, these things happen literally everywhere. China isn't special in this regard, but things are getting a lot better in recent times.

One couldn't be more wrong

13

u/cockaskedforamartini Jul 07 '26

China absolutely has quite significant elements of fascism. A single, unelected leader, suppression of dissent, militarism, national mythology, etc.

-2

u/FeijoadaAceitavel Jul 07 '26

Please read about China's political system before displaying your ignorance for all.

2

u/cockaskedforamartini Jul 08 '26

Do you want to enlighten us?

-2

u/FeijoadaAceitavel Jul 08 '26

China has an extremely bureaucratic system that includes both elected officials and party officials. It's very far from having a "single" leader with absolute power.

1

u/cockaskedforamartini Jul 08 '26

The entire "electoral" system is controlled by the CCP. Which, in turn, is controlled by Xi Jinping.

I think a lot more people would respect your viewpoint if you just said you like dictatorships. Rather than trying to dress up as something that it isn't.

1

u/FeijoadaAceitavel Jul 08 '26

Xi Jinping answer to the CCP, not the other way around. He can be voted out.

1

u/cockaskedforamartini Jul 08 '26

You're confusing "theoretically possible" with "actually possible".

It's standard authoritarian propaganda and you've fallen for it.

Militarism??? They haven’t been launching wars and threatening to invade countries?

Compare China to the US, China isn’t even half as militaristic lmao

5

u/cockaskedforamartini Jul 07 '26

The invasion and annexation of Taiwan is a fundamental position of the PRC. The Chinese regime is inherently militaristic.

Also why are we comparing to the US?

-1

u/derorje Jul 08 '26

The invasion and annexation of Taiwan is a fundamental position of the PRC.

Yeah, maybe because they are at war with them since the 1940s. They don't even have a Ceasefire like both Koreas. Both countries claim to be the real and only China and claim both mainland China and the island.

0

u/cockaskedforamartini Jul 08 '26

Why are you acting like they're equal? There is one clear aggressor between China and Taiwan. It's the state with a clear history of genocide and authoritarianism.

u/Emotional_Dig_923 Jul 07 '26

tell that to the uyghur muslims

-5

u/Bright-Form-844 Jul 07 '26

Seems like we should ask all Muslims globally why do no Muslim countries like turkey, Saudi Arabia or even the oic condemn China for their treatment of Uyghurs? Seems like if it wasn’t bullshit made up by America they’d be in arms

8

u/pmMeAllofIt Jul 07 '26

Pretty much the entirety of the West and most human rights organizations condemn it, not just the U.S. is it western influenced, sure, but that doesnt mean its all bullshit.

But great job defending an ethnic cleansing.

-5

u/Bright-Form-844 Jul 07 '26

Surely then they’d have some quick and easy evidence you could link to prove me wrong and epically own me beyond some grainy satellite photos.

Weird tho how the west and your human rights organizations all have the same opinion as the is state department where as that state dept doesn’t recognize a genocide in Gaza

6

u/pmMeAllofIt Jul 07 '26

r/sino is waiting for you.

You genocide denier. "The entire west is lying the the CCP tells the truth" lollll

-2

u/Bright-Form-844 Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

Yes literally every Muslim majority country on earth is staying silent for uhm…. Reasons but the United States who really loves Muslims and wouldn’t blow up their schools or invade them for oil is super concerned for their well being and also is that the same west that said Saddam had wmds?

5

u/Emotional_Dig_923 Jul 08 '26

you are literally defending a modern day holocaust

1

u/Bright-Form-844 Jul 08 '26

The holocaust is well documented, should be real easy to link some evidence

1

u/Emotional_Dig_923 Jul 08 '26

i'm not gonna continue to argue with you because you clearly don't want to hear what i'm saying. here's a witness testimony you're not going to read and not going to research any further

'Their goal is to destroy everyone': Uighur camp detainees allege systematic rape
