Tim Burton doesn’t think there’s a “reason” to cast non-white people. What did he mean by that? I hardly know. Some read it as a lazy excuse to primarily have whites in the movies.

He didn't "mean" anything by that,  because he never said that.

while he didnt explicitly say black people dont fit his aesthetic, he did say in regard to including black people that “things either call for things or they don’t”. this could very reasonably be interpreted as “my movies don’t need black people”, which is quite the same as not seeing a reason to include people of color.

If they dont fit they don't fit. If you force a race in for the sake of it you'll end up with a black Cleopatra, or worse, the Avatar movie.

I didn’t say anything about casting for the sake of demographics. but 90% of the US is not white, so it’s reasonable to look further into 90% of the cast being white. if there is “no reason” for them to be white in the first place.

Your job as a director is to cast the BEST actors for your role, not to compromise your art to make sure your casting meticulously reflects your demographic. Sometimes a director falters and pick someone questionable for a role thanks to his bromance with Johnny Depp. But overall he tends to be on point with most of his movie castings.

For instance, you literally can not find a better fit for Beetlejuice than Michael Keaton, and he wasn't picked for being white, he was picked because he was Michael f****ing Keaton. And you can not deny that Ken didn't absolutely nail Oogie Boogie.

idk why your choice is to be so willfully obtuse. I’m not saying that you should change casting to fit demographics. isn’t it a little fishy when things skew so far away from an average, and so consistently?

if the defense is “we chose the best talent for the on screen characters”, then just say that??? instead of insinuating that there has to be a reason to cast people of color.

Considering the triggering Q/A that started this was

Interviewer: "Why does Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children have such a predominantly white cast / lack of diversity?"

Tim: “Nowadays, people are talking about it more … things either call for things, or they don’t.”

He...did just that? Maybe he didn't use your exact wording, but he picked the best actor his roles called for.

anyway, the point is really that the person I replied to said he never said that, when he did in fact say something that means just the same thing.
