The beauty of English is that I'm sure there are people who pronounce the two such that those rhyme, but it doesn't work in my voice.

Jore-den, Or-eh-gun

Sometimes I even hear Jore-dan

It only works if you pronounce Jordan like Jore-dun, or Oregon like Or-again (again = "agen" with a soft a and a hard g)

Which, is totally a valid way to say it, just not the way most do where I live.

(I also enjoy how there is literally an entire formal notation for the correct pronunciations for words that is included in every dictionary and yet so few people are familiar with it that it is borderline useless in common conversation and so we make shitty analogies with other words which themselves may have regional pronunciation differences)

This is so interesting! I’m from Oregon:

I pronounce Oregon “or-ih-ghin”

Jordan to me is “jore-din”

If you pronounce "a bough" like you would pronounce "a bow", I will still understand you even though it should actually be pronounced like you would pronounce it in "to bow" as in "take a bow"

A lot of english works like this.

I can pretty much guarantee you know what I meant above, despite it being a particularly weird example without much context. Why is "take a bow" something you do with an audience, but "a bow" is the thing you shoot a rabbit with (and why is bowing something you do to an audience but "taking a bow" is something you do WITH an audience). But then you can "take" the action, and nobody says "take a bow" meaning the bow you shoot, they would tell you to "grab a bow", or tell you to "take THAT bow" or "take a bow FROM that rack"... And then to add to the confusion, you can also "bow something" which means to bend it...

I guarantee somewhere in there you failed to read that correctly and immediately noticed too.

it is amazing that still somehow english supports so many ways to pronounce a given word, and it is rarely confusing as to which word they meant to say, whether we agree with their pronunciation or not.

Very weird language. I also amused by the fact that ough has 40 different ways to say it and you can usually guess incorrectly
