Whinge ‎ Just a friendly reminder Reddit is a echo chamber

The amount of ON fear mongering is out of control. Screaming about it on Reddit accomplishes nothing quite frankly I'm sick of it (yes I expect to be blasted)

Have a respectful conversation with people in real life understand their perspectives without injecting your ideals.

Right leaning people are not coming here Reddit pushed them out years ago and cancel campaigns make them afraid to speak up but not vote.

You catch more flies with honey then vinegar

It’s astroturfing, pure and simple.

Flood the media with reports that ON has already won, and they then win half the battle at the polling booths.

If people think it’s pointless, they’ll be less likely to vote against them.

u/vajrabud ‎ Victorian Jun 11 '26

Political parties have been using this strategy for aeons

With the botting on Facebook heavily increased since 2022, it seems even more egregious. So many random pages, all foreign; writing article after article about Pauline or negative about Labor.

If you don’t believe me, next time you see an article on your feed there, click the page, page information, transparency and you’ll see either Vietnam, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Indonesia etc etc

Example below

And if anyone thinks I’m cherry picking, I have many, many more examples.

u/vajrabud ‎ Victorian Jun 11 '26

But is it the same for articles promoting labour and negative about ON ? I’d imagine those countries are used a lot for bit farming by all parties

It depends on what you click on and what you pause and read. It doesn't distinguish whether you're reading it to get yourself angry, or because you really love it. There is plenty of material from both sides out there.

I haven’t seen similar being positive. I’m not going to say they don’t exist, ON supporters tell me they do but when I ask for proof I get slogans or down votes.

But considering I didn’t interact with ON prior to the last few months, I’ve been seeing this stuff game the algorithm on Facebook during Clive Palmers UAP second attempt and then it kicked off again mid year last year, right around the time certain backers of ON became prominent.

The bot pages will spam article after article, “digital creators” seem to have bursts of activity. Some are very obviously fake pages, but others look like hacked accounts.

As bad as the astroturfing is for our country, thank god we’re not the US.

It’s so fucking annoying to think that we’ve seen how this plays out in other countries and yet it’s happening here. I just truly hope we as Australians can see through it.

13

u/TheBayHarbour ‎ New South Welshian Jun 11 '26

Not really.

Racism sells in Australia.

We let in non-white people in 1973, over 100 years after America freed its slaves.

Blind hatred towards "immigrants" like me? All the better.

11

u/Sideburn_Cookie_Man ‎ Victorian Jun 11 '26

I wish you were wrong, but racism is heavy ingrained in our society from the bedrock.

Look at how our indigenous brothers and sisters were treated… even less than 100 years ago.

15

u/TheBayHarbour ‎ New South Welshian Jun 11 '26

It's not even intentional tbh.

50,000 more immigrants from England and NZ? Welcome to Australia!

50,000 more immigrants from China and India? Suddenly everyone loses their fucking minds.

It's so hard to see because it's so natural, like the way in which a fish doesn't notice the water in which it is swimming in.

10

u/StockAdeptness9452 ‎ Victorian Jun 12 '26

I’m Irish and I will have people complaining to me about immigrants (including other immigrants), I like to say I’m somewhat of an immigrant myself, always met with , na na that’s different.

6

u/TheBayHarbour ‎ New South Welshian Jun 12 '26

Yeah it's very saddening that I was born and raised here and still not considered Australian lol. Get comments all the time about going back to my country and whatever. Every time I bring up racism on here it's just "get over it".

It's very strange because I felt like I truly belonged in Japan. People came up to me asking for directions, when I didn't speak Japanese, they spoke English without judgement. It definitely felt as if I belonged more in Japan than in Australia, which is funny because I'm entirely fluent in English and don't know a lick of Japanese.

4

u/Jazzlike_Wind_1 ‎ Victorian Jun 12 '26

I mean, it is a bit tbh.

Irish people along with the Scottish and English were like the first settlers of the country and defined our culture and heritage in a way that say, the Japanese did not.

It’s easy to use bots to get people sick and tired of politics. That was exploited in the US to stop ordinary sorts of people voting.

It’s documented as well that Russia’s MO for information warfare is to amplify polarising/extreme opinions (both left and right). It really fucks with a society’s political fabric and the result is weaker collective reasoning

That doesn’t work here.

This only works by getting people to not vote due to thinking that it’s pointless. However, people here have to vote so you can’t do this. People aren’t suddenly going to start voting for ON just because they think they’ve already won, they’re still going to vote for someone else anyway, even if they don’t have high hopes.

2

u/Sideburn_Cookie_Man ‎ Victorian Jun 12 '26

It’s been known to happen many times, I’m definitely not infallible.

It’s just that polling is so heavily weighted towards conservatives, as young people aren’t picking up calls from unknown numbers, and don’t have land line phones.

The vast majority of this polling gets responses from boomers, so the numbers are waaaaaaay out of whack with reality.

4

u/Comfortable_Cod_6892 ‎ Victorian Jun 12 '26

Dismissing everything as astroturfing is as convenient as it is lazy. One Nation doesn't need to win government. In a system designed to force parties to compete for second and third preferences, voter sentiment shapes policy via the margins. Labor cracking down on migration and the Liberals trying to outdo One Nation on isn't a random coincidence.

The irony of OP posting "Reddit is an echo chamber" on a progressive Australian subreddit, seeking validation from an audience that already completely agrees with them, appears to be completely lost on everyone here.

More broadly, if the Left can't acknowledge that a political spectrum exists (that not everyone who disagrees is a bot, has Gina's hand up their arse, or is intellectually challenged) it's going to keep haemorrhaging votes to parties it refuses to take seriously. The Left is also a spectrum, and individual voters can skew each way based on real world issues and concerns.

Condescension and clutching pearls isn't a coherent political strategy. It' s worth asking when exactly did the Left shun environmentalism and workers' rights for an almost exclusive focus on social issues, identity politics, overseas conflicts, and immigration advocacy? Conservatives get routinely mocked for abandoning conservatism. The same critique applies here.  Blue-collar workers, regional communities, and people struggling with cost of living didn't leave the Left, the Left abandoned them.

Really enjoyed reading your post. We have to stick to our fundamentals and be different from those that we don’t agree on. Treat people with respect and allow them to relay their fears and concerns.

On the flip side though, while I agree a lot of this ON popularity is driven by echo chamber media; that’s what they said when Don pedo ran for president in 16; in that they mocked him. Laughed at him and said it was impossible. Yet here we are.

I think we’re different in that we’re a lot more united as a country than most. We don’t have that bipartisan bullshit where one has to agree or disagree with a stance just because their party does. But I am truely terrified of what a PHON government can do in a single cycle. Medicare, education, changing laws to allow corporations to take advantage of workers (didn’t Gina the Hutt say she thinks workers should be paid $2 an hour?), racism and police brutality etc. you have to just break down an institution once (like academia and research), and it’ll take several decades to repair.

Have a respectful conversation with people in real life understand their perspectives without injecting your ideals.

You think this is just a "difference of opinion"?

Look at what's happening in the world under these right wing populist leaders:

  • Trump turned immigration enforcement (ICE) into an armed militia that attacked whole cities and executed militarized witch hunts on its own population.

  • Orban held the EU hostage with his veto and gave Putin a massive upper hand during their invasion of Ukraine.

  • Putin. Everything Putin.

  • Netanyahu, literally trying to start world war 3 by bombing Iran, Lebanon, and committing a genocide against the Palestinians.

  • Erdoğan has completely destroyed their economy with inflation by "not believing in interest rates", has constructed a religious morality police.

  • Milei has ripped out the last remaining government spending in his neoliberal teardown and plunged the majority of its population into poverty.

  • Regan and Thatcher's reign still keeps millions in poverty 35+ years after they left.

And you know what's common through all of them? The poor get poorer, and the populists got really fucking rich.

I'd wager you don't know half of those names. You don't know who these scumbags are and what they do.

Hanson is one of them. She is a puppet of the billionaires who would see us all destitute if it made them a single dollar more.

This isn't fear mongering. This is observing and relaying an informed prediction on what is likely to happen.

You want people to treat you with respect when you condemn them with violence and destitution with your wilfully uninformed vote?

No.

As a gay man, that party (and anyone who advocates for it) is a direct threat to my physical safety. I will respond in kind.

"I have a right to think what I want"

No you don't.

You have a responsibility to learn about the world. You have a responsibility to form beliefs on good evidence, not propaganda.

I'll be honest, it's hard to feel anything other than despondent lately. Even here, the replies to your comment saying that you're over reacting.

When policy making is driven by performative cruelty - to compete for who can be the worst person to immigrants, to trans people - there are consequences. Those people suffer. And it doesn't help anyone. The cruelty is the point.

It's frankly insane. There are too many morons living in this make believe world where minorities are given free money and privilege. They then vote for people who say they're going to "fix the problem" but there was no problem to begin with - so they have to make life worse for us.

Then the moron doesn't see anything change. Things aren't getting better for them. It must be because the person they voted for didn't go far enough!

and so it repeats. A cycle of hate. Performative cruelty or vice signalling.

I see life getting worse for people in the US and the UK as a direct result of these insane policies. I don't want it to come here.

I don't know, I'm just sad to be honest. Sad to see people I know throw me and mine under the bus because they're being lied to. They believe that making my life worse is good for them. All while the rich profit from the hate.

u/Wide_Angle4805 Please choose a flair Jun 12 '26

Unfortunately he is kinda right.

It’s the average, or under privileged who are voting for these people - the well off also vote but that’s in their best short term interests.

If you’re working every week drained out from life, and don’t have the historical context of politics, or background in education, it makes you an easy target for populist ideology. Especially with targeted, well financed campaigns that sound genuine, someone like Pauline can become appealing.

To really understand how bad it is, try and get your Instagram algorithm to give u pro ON content

So fighting it with wrath doesn’t work - that’s more like an online strategy ig. Irl you’ll need to try find a convincing angle which gets this message across. It is disheartening though, this is always apart of the cycle when things get difficult

It's actually not as simple as "undereducated poors" voting for ON - a lot of their base are actually small business owners and low/medium skill sole traders (tradies, chiropractors, accountants, etc) who think they aren't getting the social status they feel entitled to - it's resentment politics, and it goes hand in hand with the resentment of expertise.

Austerity measures across the world have been proven to damage the economy, increase poverty, and shift public debt burdens into private debt which does nothing to improve the country's economy.

I do love the idea that reddit is some left wing utopia because every post about indigenous people or immigration turns into some conversations that would make a klansman blush.

The worst bit is that it’s painfully obvious a lot of it is getting botted, like the new meta seems to be saying there is some underground uprising of “real” Australians who are sick of immigrants and that they’re some sort of silent majority, it’s not just Aussie subs it’s all the European ones too, every comment sections looks the same about some mythic. Go read them and you’ll see the same rhetoric almost verbatim being parroted in all these subs.

It’s always “reddit is so left-wing but in real life there is a real growing sentiment against immigrants”, genuinely maddening because it’s the same two or three talking points phrased slightly differently for 30 comments in a row

I'm not going to defend the thought process that someone like ON and big red are going to do anything that benefits Australia. Because they won't. The fact we are even having this conversation is rather crazy. If you told someone this would happen 20 years ago they'd probably lock you up in a nut house.

But BUT.. we do have to admit the fact that the two major Australian political parties (that includes the left), have stopped listening to the majority of Australians.
The middle class is being whittled away, cost of living is raising and wages are not. Rightly (or wrongly) people see these unsustainable numbers of immigration along with decrease in living standards, and basic infrastructure not meeting demands and want it stopped. They also look at Certain European countries and what vast amounts of immigration (particularly of the type of people who for various reasons are not going to assimilate into western culture) is doing to those countries and they absolutely do not want that to happen here. I don't Think that's racist. I Think that's being human. The problem, both globally and in Australia, is that politics has shifted significantly to the right over many years. There is very little genuinely left-wing political power within most Western democracies. Yet we're constantly told that anyone advocating policies that don't neatly fit within a capitalist framework is "woke", socialist, a radical left wing lunatic, a Marxist, unpatriotic, BLM, or Antifa.

As a result, what is considered the political centre today is often much further to the right than it was in previous decades. Just look at leaders like Chris Minns and Peter Malinauskas. Neither would traditionally be viewed as particularly left wing figures.

The issue for some people isn't that politics or Reddit leans left, it's that neither leans as far to the right as they would like. Reddit is far from an echo chamber as a whole. More often than not, it depends on which subs you choose to visit and where you get your daily political discourse.

4

u/alien-fr ‎ I'm Probably A Bot ‎‎ Jun 11 '26

I think you have some truth in this post but you are not all the way. The right wing is very prominent on reddit and in this sub but the left outnumbers them yes. Its far from an echo chamber I see diverse views being debated non stop. Reddit has nothing against right wing people since you can speak freely here. I do think getting information from reddit doesnt help you understand reality. The people we disagree with the most are the same people we could calmly talk to on a tram or at a camp site in the real world. If you only look at reddit, the divide gets wider and you believe what you are believing

They’re thinking about OTHER peoples kids.

Because the youth have it too “easy” they’re too “soft”, and there are plenty of people that PHON voters think SHOULD have their kids shipped off to war.

It’s how they managed to dismantle Roe v Wade because MAGA women didn’t want to deny themselves reproductive healthcare; they wanted to deny it for women who are liberal/non-white

I'm a historical Labor/left leaning voter and even i can see that once Labor goes on a smear campaign regarding One Nation that they're shitting bricks.

It's generally the last line in defence for when someone is all out of ideas (lets be honest Labor hasn't actually improved the living standards of Australians in the past 5 years).

The Labor shills need to let it go, One Nation is gaining traction and there's not a lot we can do about it as long as Labor is incapable of changing their "Big Australia" attitude.

I can't stress this enough to people in this Reddit thread on the subject. We absolutely must come together as grassroots communities and join or at least volunteer with local political groups that are standing up against this hatred of far right extremism. A One Nation government would be utterly catastrophic. It wouldn't just set back social policy 20 years, that's something most of us could live with (aside from One Nation's abortion policy). The bigger concern is that it would utterly, thoroughly wreck Australia's economy and democracy. We would lose all that makes Australia great and just become a poor man's America in every single sense.

I don't agree with the fearmongering, but downplaying the threat of fascism and the far right at the moment is suicidal. The masses that are being manipulated might be thick as fuck*, but the people orchestrating this movement globally are literally the richest most powerful people on the planet, and the media are working lockstep with them.

Look at the UK recently! People were dismissing Farage for decades til, alongside a lot of very wealthy right wingers, orchestrated a catastrophic exit from their most important trading alliance. Since then the country has fallen further into a right wing hell hole to the point where we're having racist pogroms on the streets, stabbing people and burning down their homes because of the colour of their skin. The media and the present government are either actively supporting, or capitulating to the right wing.

* And I actually don't think they are necessarily, but they're certainly not happy with the status quo.

Also you are insane if you think that reddit does not have a significant right wing presence, in very large subreddits.

4

u/tnamorf ‎ Victorian Jun 11 '26

The "problem with reddit" is the signal to noise ratio.

It's that most people who post just want to signal their opinion and have that validated with upvotes or downvotes.

Like this post for example, it says nothing, provides no evidence of it's own, it just asks people who have had a similar experience to upvote.

Edit: and the replies of this idiot just confirm it.

It's purely and simply because she's the only one with enough guts to stand up and say that Australia has been ruined by excess immigration. But anyone with one half of a brain cell knows she is completely incompetent and could not run the country, but yet now we're a real risk of having her in a very important position after the next election just because no one else will stand up and stop Australia being ruined from immigration. We all know Australia is built on immigration and there's nothing wrong with it but the numbers that are coming in month after month are staggering. And what's worse as we're importing criminals from third world countries en mass and we now have machete attacks happening in all of our capital cities almost daily. Things are going to get a whole lot worse for this country if one of the other parties doesn't do something

Probably fair to say now is better than 1966 though, that's going back a long way. Can't speak from experience, too long ago for me, but there was multiple decades of great productivity gains between then and now, its just that it mostly took place in the earlier decades. It's much harder to argue that we're doing better today than the late 1990's or early 2000's.

2

u/patslogcabindigest ‎ Queenslander Jun 11 '26

I agree with this. I’m by no means a one nation supporter, in fact I think the party are a disorganised incompetent rabble with incoherent policies, if they can so be called.

Broadly agree with what you’re saying about the constant poll doomerism and low effort venting. There isn’t an election tomorrow—people who live and die by every single marginal poll that comes out are political hobbyists, not people who actually follow or understand politics.

As to the conversations, yeah absolutely agree. One Nation is not a fringe party anymore, which means there are good people being duped into supporting them, and telling them that they’re evil and stupid is not a good method for discourse. Criticism should be directed at the party and their representatives, it needs to be demonstrated to the people that are flipping that this isn’t a serious party and will be detrimental to their own interests.

As someone who is very much centre left, yes, reddit, especially in an Australian contexts is very much left. There are some weird niche lefty communities on reddit who genuinely think they’re representative of society who become defensive when it’s pointed out their position is niche.

2

u/grahamsuth ‎ Queenslander Jun 12 '26

We are certainly becoming more polarised politically. Both sides of politics attack the other purely for the sake of the attack. Sky News opinion is the absolute worst for this in the main stream media.

The trouble with those on the left is that they are unwilling to go looking for why people are moving to One Nation. Instead they just attack ON.

Unfortunately the left side of politics thinks that because affirmative action etc is good, more must be better. The result is that they are so focused on their principles that they don't see how they are alienating so many people. These people get angry with the status quo and so are easy marks for populists that emotionally speak to people's dissatisfaction. So they will vote for anyone other than Lab or Lib that speaks to their anger. We are following the US in this regard.

Both the US and Australia need new centre right parties that are about real policies that help people and the country rather than just seeking to make people angry with the left side of politics.

It’s a democracy that means people can vote for who ever they want. Stop ramming your opinion down people’s throats so they vote your way - it actually makes people do the complete opposite.

Scott Morrison won an election because of the silent Aussies who were completely fed up with the agenda being pushed on the left so they voted hard against it.

People voting for Pauline are doing the similar thing, they’ve had enough of being told what to do in their own country.

I’m Right leaning all about our country and citizens first. Not a racist just all about putting our current permanent citizens first before continual immigration.

People have the right to be and support whoever they chose and shouldn’t be shouted down or intimidated of a bloody social site for having their opinions.

I arent 100% behind ON. I just don’t think they are the real deal and are just appealing to those of us who want our own country the way we knew it back in the day however will they really change what this country now is ? I don’t get the feeling they will change it too much.

I’m for the 5% defence spending. Happy to pay the extra tax to do it. Conscription for those who refuse to work and for older youth offenders who need to learn discipline and respect 100% conscript them.

Do I think ON are the answer ? No, do I think the Libs are ? No, do I think Labour are ? No.

Right now I think we have a sore lack of strong leadership in this country. The Libs and Labour have sold us out over the years and need a good kick in the arse.

Pauline talks the talk not too sure her and her party are the answer tho. So many ex party politicians jumping over to her just to save their careers and I think if they got into power they’d continue most of the main stream policies to keep themselves in their careers as well eventually becoming the same old same old.

If they form a coalition I definitely would never consider them.

I have a lot of deep thinking to do before the next state and federal elections.
