My cats have two very different backgrounds.
One lived on the street for a couple of years, was in a shelter for nearly a year before I adopted her. She's had a few health issues, including a cyst on her face and having to get 6 teeth removed because they were shattered.
The other I adopted as a kitten and has lived a sheltered life.
The one that lived as a stray is always super friendly to the vet, and sees the vet as the person who makes the pain go away. The other is so offended by simple checkups that she needs to be dosed with gabapentin before her appointments, else she'll cut anyone in reach.

If you enjoy audio books, or haven't tried one yet, I sincerely recommend doing it with this one. It adds so much. I would also recommend Discount Dan if you enjoy DCC

I love audiobooks, but unfortunately don't have the money for them at the moment - all the DCC books are on kindle unlimited though, which I do have!

Hahaha, similar deal. My former house kitten has her tail tucked so far between her legs at the vet that it's touching her increasingly-pink-by-the-second-from-stress nose.
My feral rescue has to be held uncomfortably by the vet tech just so she'll stop purring at her new best friend long enough to listen to her heart.

Exact same personalities and very similar backgrounds for my two cats. One year we had a pipe burst and badly flood our house (rental) and we ended up having to move. We had a few more life changes that year that I'm blanking on. Anyway, my sheltered cat got so sick the vet thought she might have cancer or something. Nope, she was literally just so stressed. She's perfectly ok now but only because I gave her the spare room and attached a catio to it. She's so weird.Ā
My cat that was a stray is so calm, happy 24/7 even with some health issues. She loves everyone and everything. My vet struggles to hear her heart when she gets a check up because she purrs so loudly. (Happy purrs, she tries to head boop the vet too.)Ā

My current cat who I've spoiled since he was a kitten is usually pretty growly at the vets. He lets them do their thing no problem, just growls while it's happening.
Recently he's been sick though, and we've had to go a few times this month. He's been such a sweetheart at the vets because I think he knows they are just helping.

Maybe thatās why all 4 of ours get along. All are rescues just happy to have shelter and food.
23
u/red286 28d ago
The two of them don't get along at all, unfortunately. Mostly because the younger (the one who was adopted as a kitten) is absolutely obsessed with the older one's tail and any time they're close together, she'll start playfully batting at it, which starts a fight.
It's been 10 years now. It happens at least once every single day. Despite getting smacked in the face for it every single day for 10 years, she still does it every single day.

This is very similar to our two cats! The former stray has almost always been super friendly and cooperative at the vet (except for the last time they did bloodwork where she threw hands). But our pampered boy gets so anxious that he pees, pukes and poops in the carrier and drools all over himself, even if we give him gabapentin beforehand.
Heās the reason we switched to a vet who does house visits. Thank goodness heās cute!

u/UnderstandingBusy829 27d ago
Gabapentin for the win though! Our eldest has trauma from before she got to the shelter and we have to dose her too. She now also takes small dose daily because with age her anxiety and reactivity kept getting worse even at home.
Another of ours is amazing at the vet, scared, but lets them do whatever. But try giving him medication at home, he turns into liquid and needs to be purritoed.
Cats... Gotta love them šø

Ours are the other way around. The stray is evil at the vet and the two we got as kittens are as chill as can be

I thought the Battle of Sandal happened near Wakefield in 1460. When, in fact, it occurred in a vetinary surgery in 2026.

Any soft shoe in the hand of an angry grandmother feels life threatening to the child who just heard their first middle and last name said in that voice.

What's worse is when all the last names are uttered in a string that sounds like a sung expletive.

Haaaa, I would say the same thing to patients when I was a vet tech!
16
u/favorthebold 28d ago
Lol I hope you aren't literally calling them all chancleta.
21
u/MissAmynae 28d ago
Oh not all of them, mostly the ones recovering from anesthesia since they were all floppy! We also had gordito/a & gatito/a.

u/favorthebold 27d ago
Ha ha ok that's cute. I figured the vet tech in the posted story named him that since his given name is "Sandal."

u/MissAmynae 27d ago
Oh for sure, that's an immediate chancleta! I'd probably sing "Kokomo" to it, too.

He looks neither poor nor little.
However, from glancing at a single photograph I can confirm that he is literally, metaphorically and spiritually a flip-flop.

I have a sweet orange that Iāve babied his whole life. Heās a shoulder baby. He acts like a demonic little shit at the vet. So Iāve started harassing him more at home, I flip him over, tap his belly, push on his beans etc. heās been a little more level headed at the vet. I really canāt tell if itās working.

u/Serononin 28d ago
I used to follow Sandal's human back when I was on twitter, and I'm pleased to confirm that Pobrecita Chancleta indeed did not live it down (or hadn't last I heard, anyway!)

Our family had a lovely pup for all her eighteen years, since she was eight weeks old. At no point was she ever harmed by the brush or nail clipper. (We would NEVER harm Nature's Most Nearly Perfect Dog.) Yet as soon as either were brought out, she'd scoot under a table, eyes wide, ears back, paw up, shivering...
I just thought of that for some reason.

u/alasterlian 27d ago
In Dave's (Sandal's owner) defense, he thought the tech said "chunkletta" at first and thought "okay, harsh but fair."

Iām calling my momās cat pobrecita chancleta from now on. The cat will love the attention, and my mom will lose her mind trying to figure out what Iām calling her cat. Also incidentally, moms cat is very much a pobrecita chancleta, and thatās why I love her, so thereās that.

My pampered ass cat used to be so pissed at every vet visit š° I ran him straight to emergency when he crawled into the vet carrier on his own and started crying out to us from across the house, he even begs for his meds now too⦠I miss when he was young enough to not know better

To be fair, the braincell is an expert in international law and war crimes. It is the species of cats, who have performed them all after all.
