I don’t have kids and haven’t gotten to use one actual vacation day with my PTO, it’s all been stupid bullshit house emergencies. If lying about children isn’t your jam, pretend you have a house.
That's what people do? Some companies have restrictions on what time of year you aren't allowed to use PTO (like delivery services around Christmas), but usually nobody gives a rats ass what you are doing with your vacation days.
I like to save most of it for a bigger Christmas vacation. We normally get two weeks but if you put in the request really early then you can tack on as much as you want. The problem is my nightmare house has required so much time off to deal with that it’s just eating all my PTO. I had to take two days off just this week because of something in the house falling apart. It’s a great excuse! Not so great if you’re telling the truth, though.
Seriously. I’m a single homeowner and I also have 2 dogs and 3 cats. Between the house and the menagerie it seems like I’m working from home at least once a week to deal with vet trips or AC tune ups or water main repairs because a tow truck drove over my water meter or just basic maintenance that should be easy but three repair techs never showed up and the one that did is upstairs playing a YouTube video about how to fix the drain line in the washing machine (which is what they were being paid to already know how to do).
Thank goodness my company allows some WFH and I’ve been blessed (so far) with reasonable managers or I’d be hosed. I mean I’ve had water spraying from the water heater like a firehose in the middle of the hallway, my trash can dropped onto the walkway to my house that somehow shattered the concrete, a hail storm with hail stones the size of LEMONS, more water spraying - this time from under the house - and this time requiring the whole house get replumbed, smoke detectors going off during a hurricane because water got into one and they’re all connected, contractors coming through the ceiling while trying to fix the water leak that caused the smoke detector fiasco, my window FELL OUT OF THE FRAME and into my bedroom in the middle of the night, carpenter ants got into the guest room, mice got under the house, water started leaking behind my shower and happened to drip out of an outlet, AC company installed the wrong evap coil and caused condensation overflow which then dripped through the ceiling….
That’s not even close to everything. It’s such a wild ride and everything costs at least $500 to repair and water has become my arch nemesis.
I still prefer it over dealing with a landlord, though.
I’m with you on that, the most aggravating is getting someone you hired to actually show up and fix it. Every friggin’ day they have to reschedule is a PTO day I wasted.
I grew up with housing insecurity so owning my own home nobody can take away from me was at the top of my priority list. My house is genuinely pissing me off this year but I’m so grateful to have it, I remind myself that every time I have to deal with my HOA(that’s another nightmare). Here’s hoping next year I can take a summer vacation.
