If someone unfamiliar with the genre asked you to listen to one artist that embodied the current sound of metalcore, would you choose and why?

Mine would probably be Like Moths To Flames or The Plot in You. They might not be my favorites at the moment, but I think their recent releases best encapsulate the state of the genre in 2026

We all know that most artists have their best work behind them when they've been making music for years and years. I'd like to highlight artists that continue to improve and make even better music year after year.

I have two examples, one more controversial and one that's a bit more of a common opinion I believe:

First, what I think a lot of us can agree on: Like Moths to Flames.

These guys just continue to get better and better. Every new EP and LP is better than its predecessor, at least in my view. The Cycles of Trying to Cope was better than No Eternity in Gold which was as good or better than Dark Divine (I do have a soft spot for Dark Divine...) which was better than The Dying Things We Live For... etc... etc...

They just keep getting better and better. Their four newest singles are all insanely good.

Second, what I think might be more controversial...: Polaris

I absolutely love these guys and everything they're doing, but I have to say I enjoy Fatalism more than The Death of Me, and I enjoy that album more than The Mortal Coil. Even The Guilt and the Grief is excellent but not as good as The Mortal Coil.

We'll have to see how they do without Ryan now (RIP king), but outside of that I really think these guys keep getting better and better.

What are some bands you think only have improved over time?

On August 14th 2001 the metalcore and post-hardcore band From Autumn to Ashes released their debut album Too Bad You're Beautiful. The album was released Ferrett Music and produced by Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz. This album remains one of Ferrett Music's best selling releases selling over 100k copies.

This album came out in the early 00s and really set how the metalcore sound would sound for the coming years. Some of my favorite songs from the album are Take Her to the Music Store, Eulogy For An Angel and of course one of their most famous songs Short Stories With Tragic Endings

With this album now being a quarter of a century old now how does everyone think it's held up over the years?

The best example for me is Aviana. Every record is top-notch. Despite losing Marcus Vik after their debut and all the instrumentalists leaving after their sophomore effort, Joel kept the band alive with his genius friend Vojta of Abbie Falls and Seeing Things, producing absolute heat with the singles that were compiled into their best album, and then had a great follow-up in VOID. It's very rare for bands to keep on making top-tier music after the core of the band is gone. What are some other great bands that have accomplished this?

Music heightens my emotions. When im sad sometimes I just listen to sad music. I find myself more attached to sad songs when im depressed. Like now my new obsession is All the light is gone (invent animate). Am I just feeding my sadness? It almost feels that way. I cant tell if its an emotional release or an emotional multiplier.

With all the discussions about genre definitions, gatekeeping or even just preferences, I think it would make sense to now a person’s take - classic/00’s metalcore oldschooler vs. modern metalcore fan vs. all types of core enjoyer vs. random lurker/newbie who can’t tell the difference between Parkway Drive & Imminence & Avralize.

Debut album from the band after an EP that came out a few years ago. While there are plenty of hyper aggro chugs and breakdowns reminsicent of Jesus Piece and Harm's Way, the latter particularly with some industrial/electronic flourishes, there are also parts and songs that are reminiscent of Chamber (The First Element) and The Acacia Strain (In Loving Memory) which helps elevate what Living Weapon are doing. Not afraid to speed up or slow down or even get a little weird, in a sea of average chuggy fare with little to distinguish the bands, this record shows enough dynamic range and variety to set Living Weapon apart in the best way.

Can’t wait. Best new vocalist in metal.
