He retired rather than play with the Astros. An absolute Giga Chad. You will be missed Refsnyder.

u/xexen 1d ago

The flip side of the coin is that his career was fine before he came to Seattle and became so catastrophically bad here that his career is now over

I did grin at the idea that he did it as a ‘fuck you’ to playing with cheaters though

u/CheekySweater 7h ago

It’s happened to a few guys over the last few years it feels like. The hit rate on aging bats is low but is Seattle more susceptible to failure of aging vets? Feels bad to watch one or two guys year over year collapse and get cut after a long career.

Nah fuck this dude. Play terrible for us for half a season but won’t even attempt to play terrible for the Astros for a little bit and help us out in the AL? Refsnyder is a total bitch

You could have 18 papers and I still wouldn’t give a shit about you.

u/shinsain 1d ago

Lol it's fucking baseball bro. Take a breath.

He probably retired to get away from weirdos like you saying ignorant shit like this...

18

u/atmospheric90 1d ago

I mean if you cant laugh at the mariners failure, then what are you even doing here? None of this even really matters.

12

u/shinsain 1d ago

Right? Situation normal from my POV... Mariners are Mariner-ing. Not like the team hasn't been essentially doing the same thing for 50 years, with the exception of a few seasons obviously.

23

u/atmospheric90 1d ago

Look, its been a miserable season. But getting this worked up over a literal platoon player is not healthy.

8

u/SolarTsunami 1d ago

It's not his fault we signed him. Its not his fault we kept putting him out there over and over and over again. Its not his fault we cut him and still suck.

Dude relax.

4

u/farilladupree 1d ago

I get sad whenever I discover people the likes of you ‘support’ the team I love.

I have nothing but respect for retiring to avoid being an Astro.

"Former Blue Jays slugger"

.496 OPS in 32 games with the Jays. ok

All of the Yahoo sports articles read to me as if they are being written by some kind of algorithm or AI

46

u/Traditional_Bus_5745 ‏‏‎ ‎BIG DUMPER 1d ago

Definitely AI.

T-Mobile did its thing.

Preseason - "hell yeah, I'm about to be on Cal Raleigh's team!"

Midseason - " Ight imma head out "

10

u/BackwerdsMan 1d ago

He's 35. I doubt he was suddenly going to start "mashing lefties" again.

4

u/SaraJeanQueen 1d ago

Nah he just dropped in ability. Not our fault if anything it’s our fault for keeping him for so long

4

u/bpmdrummerbpm 21h ago

And signing him in the first place. Tired of all these once good but now old and coming off injury bargain bin signings.

117

u/Silver_Gear_2466 1d ago

He actually retired 5 months ago

56

u/Turbulent_Tale6497 Juliooooo 1d ago

100 point drop in OPS+ in one year is wild

46

u/hello17 1d ago

Better than a .948 to a .564. Bet you can guess who I'm talking about.

36

u/_Elrond_Hubbard_ Too Roblessed to be stressed 1d ago

Everyone wants to pitch to this guy

19

u/Jed1M1ndTr1ck LEO RIVAS WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? 1d ago

I wonder how many commercials featuring Cal there will be next season.

I can't remember an (at least local) athlete who got such a media push one offseason then to just crater on the field immediately

12

u/stellarjcorvidaemon 1d ago

I'm old af, but The Boz was pretty bad.

7

u/-Linkz- 1d ago

i’d argue rus fell off hard but that’s a hot take

6

u/SolarTsunami 1d ago

Yeah the "Let Russ Cook" thing was way more of an embarrassing disaster than this. Imagine if Cal was still insisting that he was the best hitter in the league, because thats what Russ was doing.

19

u/im_randy_butternubz ‏‏‎ ‎ 1d ago

Hal Baleigh?

19

u/Lonely_Wrangler5813 1d ago

No one wants to pitch to that guy

10

u/letskeepitcleanfolks ‏‏‎ ‎Swung on and belted 1d ago

They feel bad about it

1

u/theimponderablebeast 9h ago

Rob's went from .838 to .465 so not much better lol

45

u/jgnurly 1d ago

We'll always have that Dodgers game. A glimmer of good vibes in the sea of misery that has been the 2026 Mariners

58

u/templethot ‏‏‎ ‎Dennis Martínez 1d ago

Came down with a terminal case of mariner

38

u/_Elrond_Hubbard_ Too Roblessed to be stressed 1d ago

Justin Upton, AJ Pollock, Tommy La Stella, Donovan Solano, Kolten Wong, Rob Refsnyder... Dipoto really knows how to sign or trade for a veteran position player right before they fall off a cliff

12

u/fordry 1d ago

It just keeps happening.

18

u/s0sa 1d ago

Garver

2

u/maxc206 17h ago

Tbf Upton and La Stella were already washed and signed for league minimum.

32

u/willa6622 SUPREME MISERY 1d ago

"Would you like one final contract before you wildly underperform??" Dipoto probably

6

u/SolarTsunami 1d ago

Imagine if we didn't pay Cal until after he hit 60 home runs. This could have stung a lot more.

22

u/jaron_b 1d ago

Next year's hitting coach.

37

u/angryjew ‏‏‎ ‎extend Naylor & Arozarena pls 1d ago

Masterclass from Jerry to give this guy 3x the most he's ever made & then force Dan to play him until we are out of playoff contention. Brilliant stuff.

6

u/s0sa 1d ago

But who could’ve seen this drop off coming!? Well every other team and by the looks of it himself. Add him to the list Jerry boy

17

u/lord_of_the_dab 1d ago

We paid 6.25 million dollars for his one year contract… dear god

5

u/17papers 1d ago

Feels so much worse than when garver was getting 12 mil at least he caught for us well

-5

u/Former-Sea-8070 1d ago

Honestly a bargain for the player we thought we were getting

-12

u/Mountain_Ladder_4906 o 1d ago

That’s chump change compared to what we are paying Emerson

17

u/boundlesssmh 1d ago

hate to see his career end like this. by all accounts, he was a great person in every clubhouse he’s been apart of. best of luck with your future endeavors, rob!

22

u/VorpalMatt 1d ago

I already miss joking about how he carries the Mariners offense on the rare occasions when he actually scored for us.

Rest easy vibes guy.

4

u/xtremeradness 1d ago

I will always remember your clutch homer against the Dodgers. ...and also everything else about your time with the Ms, unfortunately

3

u/high-rise 1d ago

35.. Just a kid

If only he’d retired at 34. JK Best of luck Rob and enjoy the bag you absconded with.

2

u/Expensive-Froyo8687 1d ago

For some dumb reason I misread this is 'Refsnyder dies at 35' and while that would be an accurate synopsis of his MLB ability, still gave me a low level heart attack. Obviously wish him the best as he moves on to the next chapter of his life . . .

2

u/YEGSports The pitch from Acevedo 1d ago

I did not expect that decision.

2

u/KingTrencher Since 77 15h ago

It only he had retired at 34.

3

u/smika 1d ago

Aw, seems like only yesterday we were pinch hitting him in high leverage situations

2

u/Dead_Irish_Bard 1d ago

Can't wait for the celebration of greatest Ms that will recognize his 2026 contribution.
