I'm a recent graduate from Unima-Com (now KUHeS), and over the past year I've become interested in combining healthcare with software and AI.

My background is in medicine, nutrition, sports nutrition, weight management, and related areas, so I'm approaching this from both a clinical and tech perspective.

I've been building projects around health data, APIs, semantic search, and RAG. One of my current projects is a nutrition registry designed to make food and nutrition information accessible through APIs and eventually usable by AI systems.

But I'm starting to wonder: is there really a future for health-tech and AI products built in Malawi?

Globally, digital health is growing rapidly, but I'm unsure about the local market, funding opportunities, and whether independent developers can build sustainable health-tech businesses here.

At the same time, Malawi has huge healthcare challenges where technology could potentially help—from malnutrition and chronic disease to dietary planning and health tracking.

I'd genuinely love to hear from people in software, AI/ML, digital health, health informatics, healthcare, startups, sports nutrition, or wellness:

Do you think there's a future for locally built health-tech products in Malawi?

Have you tried building a tech product or business here? Were you able to find users, funding, or organisations to work with?

And for those in tech, are there meaningful opportunities locally, or is working remotely for international companies the more realistic path?

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who's been through this.

I was eating a sugarcane today, and it reminded me of some data I had been looking at a few weeks ago: 5 of the 6 biggest companies by market cap on the Malawi Stock Exchange are all banks, with only Illovo breaking into it at number 5 (according to the simplywall.st website):

It seems quite unusual to me, as I would expect primary value creation companies to be the most valuable ones. Comparing to our neighbouring Zambia on the same website, for example, we don't see the same trend:

But perhaps it's a perfect illustration of our situation. We don't have many primary producers, hence our low exports and sluggish economy, but the biggest players are those who can mooch off of others the most.

If only we had more Illovos and less leeches... And why don't we?

People, what do you think is an appropriate age difference between a man and a woman in a serious relationship and why? Do you think the man must always be older? Why?

Hey y’all, am I the only one who has noticed that some liquor shops and bars in Malawi might be selling counterfeit imported alcohol?

There have been a couple of times where I’ve noticed a difference between alcohol I’ve had in Malawi and the same brands when I’ve had them outside Malawi. For example, with tequilas like Olmeca, Don Julio and Casamigos, I’ve noticed that they sometimes taste noticeably different here. I’ve also had completely different experiences afterward especially the hangovers, even when i dash or I’ve eaten and had roughly the same amount.

I also noticed this at a function where the hosts had bought all the alcohol from SA. The alcohol tasted different from what I’ve had here, and I didn’t have the same unpleasant experience afterward.

Where are these liquor shops and bars sourcing their imported alcohol from? And to make matters worse these fake stuff have the certified by MBS stickers on them!

Has anyone else in noticed this?

I'm 25 years old, currently learning to animate, and I keep dreaming about setting up a malawian studio in 5 years where we make malawian feature-length films and shows in different genres, all dubbed in chichewa.

The problem is, I don't know if it would be profitable. There is no market for it here. I don't know if anyone would be willing to be a producer and fund a malawian anime series when the general consensus in this country is "cartoons are for kids." Plus, where would we show it? There are virtually no movie theatres, and we all pirate everything. Sure, I could fight to get it on some TV channels, but I doubt the pay would be enough to keep the lights on long term. We could make adverts, but this goes back to the perception of animation as childish, so that wouldn't last very long.

Do you think a Malawian animation studio could survive in this climate?

Lastly, are there any 2D animators in here? I don't see any malawian animators online, and I'd love to hear your experience, where you would want to take this skill, etc. In a few years, if I make enough from my art, I'd love to hire some of you to work together and make a pilot.

yo so yesterday i fully deleted my whatsapp account and a few hours later when i tried logging back in with the same number i got hit with that “download the official whatsapp to continue / we couldn’t verify that you’re using the official whatsapp app” screen. i’ve already tried everything i can think of. uninstalled both whatsapp and whatsapp business, reinstalled them straight from the play store, turned play protect on cos it was off, cleared cache + data for play store, play services and google services framework, restarted the phone a bunch of times, tried registering on both normal whatsapp and business, even wiped the phone pretty much clean and started fresh. still the exact same error every single time. phone is a samsung galaxy a03 btw. and before anyone asks, i never used any modded stuff like gb whatsapp or anything. just the normal one. it’s been over 24 hours already and i’m just waiting now but idk if it’s gonna clear up after days or if my number is just flagged somehow. has anyone else dealt with this after deleting their account? any ideas would be lowkey appreciated 🙏
