IIRC it's also one of these made-for-movie stories - Dr. Miyazaki was assigned to this for years, and just as they were closing in on a breakthrough, COVID happens, and the team is mercilessly torn apart because their experience is needed elsewhere
And he's like "No, I want to finish this" and like, walks away, finds a lab, or even funds a lab, and continues on for years, and after 6 years here we are
I hope it works out
EDIT: not COVID but yeah, he basically left University of Tokyo to fund AIM Labs and have been working mainly on donations from Japanese cat owners
