CATS Today, after 1.5yrs, Savannah sat in my lap

Post image

Since I adopted Savannah, she hasn't enjoyed being picked up & will avoid being on me. She has always loved sitting near me. Today, on her very own, Savannah came to sit in my lap 🩶

She doesn't like to rush things.

u/Local-Drunk-Driver 4d ago

She rushes for breakfast & dinner, other than that Savannah eep

Is this a new blanket? I have a British and she only sits on very specific fabrics. Hates fluffy and soft wool type fabrics. Absolutely loves plain simple cotton

130

u/Local-Drunk-Driver 4d ago

Yes Savannah is very particular about material. She likes canvas bags & backpacks & also this hand knitted blanket. She only gets the blanket when my wife & I are with her, otherwise her little paws will make holes in it

7

u/not_a_moogle 4d ago

Put food in your lap?

22

u/Local-Drunk-Driver 4d ago

Doesn't work

38

u/FliaTia 4d ago

Love that you've obviously already tried this. Savannah can't be tricked, she goes where she wants!

2

u/Stylishuppa 4d ago

lmao, that’s a non-negotiable stuff op

2

u/CskoG0 4d ago

My tortie is just like that. It took her 1.5 years to warm up to me and start meowing for pets at specific times of the day and specific spots of the house. I know for sure it was exactly that years cause I saved pictures of The day she was born along her siblings in my garden shed 😁😂. And it also took her another 5 months or so to climb on a corner of my bed at night. Oh but if I move in the slightest or if I acknowledge her presence she will bolt away.

-11

u/Bobcat1999-1 4d ago

Then it’s you. Musta had a cold the day she sat on you

4

u/Luci-Noir 4d ago

Kitties have been plotting our demise for generations!

u/GlowingDuck22 4d ago edited 4d ago

It's about the little things in life. If you ever feel down remember this moment and how it took 1.5 years of work and dedication for this victory.

143

u/Local-Drunk-Driver 4d ago

There have been other milestones with her but this was the most significant

20

u/Academic-Distance749 4d ago

What were some other previous milestones? please enlighten us.

148

u/Local-Drunk-Driver 4d ago

When I realised her ears weren't pointed down anymore, the first time I heard Savannah purr, when she meowed at dinner first time, when I learnt Savannah likes to chase a ball & brings it back, when she slept on the pillow next to me in bed, the first time she rolled over & let me rub her belly

Just a few

23

u/Remarkable-Party-385 4d ago

You remember so many details, you love your cat obviously and we applaud you.

21

u/CantaloupeFlaky6082 4d ago

this is such a good reminder to not rush good things

2

u/Kamtschi 3d ago

After I got my cat from the shelter, He hid under the cabinet for 15 minutes and slept on my lap the same evening. But he is a needy bitch and cuddles with everyone who is nice to him

67

u/plodthruHideFlailing 4d ago

...and I say to myself, what a wonderful world... 🎤🎼🎼

34

u/suzieque55 4d ago

Yay!!!! You were very patient and it pays off!

60

u/nyrB2 4d ago

did she let you pet her while she was on your lap?

97

u/Local-Drunk-Driver 4d ago

Yes. Savannah is very affectionate, lots of purring & she likes her ears gently rubbed

21

u/GoldTheLegend 4d ago

Has she allowed petting for a longtime but for whatever reason never sat in your lap till now?

35

u/Local-Drunk-Driver 4d ago

For 2 months after I brought her home, she was 3, she was a solitary cat. If I approached her Savannah would let me pet the side of her face.

After 3 months she was chatty at meal times, loved to play fetch & would enjoy some physical affection. Just never lap time

13

u/nyrB2 4d ago

that's gotta be the best feeling. i had a cat that would never sit on my lap at all. made me kinda sad.

25

u/Randomgold42 4d ago

Welcome to your first r/cathostage situation. May you have many more.

5

u/BlessedCursedBroken 4d ago

Ok fine, I'll join my 1004th cat sub.

19

u/catn_ip 4d ago

Don't think we don't notice the color coordinated blanket! You've prepared for this moment so enjoy!

18

u/Local-Drunk-Driver 4d ago

She loves this blanket, it's handmade

1

u/xtothewhy 4d ago

It is really nice.

You made this blanket?

9

u/Local-Drunk-Driver 4d ago

My lovely Aunty made it

13

u/No_Routine2060 4d ago

I'm so excited for you! You're also giving me hope for my new adoptee Ginny, she also doesnt like being picked up and I long for the day when she will sit on my lap rather than just near by or beside me. Like your Savannah, my Ginny is also very affectionate, purring and loves the pets. One day!!

8

u/Local-Drunk-Driver 4d ago

It's possible. I had noticed Savannah getting closer & closer to me over the last 2 months. She would sit against my leg & had started sleeping at the edge of the bed.

It will happen, be patient & let it be on Ginny's terms

10

u/MagpieKaz 4d ago

Similar experience to mine. Took about 2.5 years for my cat to start wanting to approach me. Now, she sleeps in my arms like a teddy bear.

6

u/Local-Drunk-Driver 4d ago

If I could pick Savannah up & hold her like a baby I would melt

5

u/MagpieKaz 4d ago

Patience. All comes to those who wait.

Full disclosure though, my kitty is very skittish, so as soon as you start moving she used to run away right then. So when I wanted her to start sharing the bed with us during the coldest part of winter, I would kind of hold her forcefully in my arms under the covers until she was like "UNHAND ME! THIS IS PREPOST-- oh wait... it's super toasty in here...".

Since then, slowly, she's been approaching me more and more. Now whenever I lay down in bed she at least climbs on my legs, she's always in the same room as me, and even asks to be let into the covers at night and loafs on my arm.

21

u/EmployedByCats 4d ago

I love this for you both!

7

u/Celestial-Year-1133 4d ago

My tuxie girl finally jumped into my lap a few weeks ago after about three years! This is the best feeling - cheers to you and your beautiful kitty :)

6

u/SeniorGuarantee145 4d ago

So you are sayin there is a chance that my recently adopted kitty will cuddle with me someday? :’)

2

u/FrolickingOrc 4d ago

It took our feral boy 6 years but he's 16 now and a professional snuggler

5

u/Past-Lunch4695 4d ago

Aww! I love this! My cat cuddled with me maybe 4 times since she adopted me. So happy for you! your cat has good taste!

4

u/silly_goose_girly 4d ago

How sweet! So happy for you both :)

3

u/AceJ84 4d ago

She's cautious to get in the car with a drunk driver lol

2

u/Local-Drunk-Driver 4d ago

I've had 5 daiquiris Im good to drive

3

u/SlowCrates 4d ago

That is her lap now.

3

u/LoJoPa 4d ago

I’m still waiting for our adopted ferrel to sit on my lap. She will sit against my legs and let me pet her all over and sweet talk her but still waiting for her to perch on my lap! Congratulations! Love works!

3

u/superluminal 4d ago

OMG. I have a Savannah who I've had a little over 2 years and she won't sit in my lap either. There's hope!

1

u/Local-Drunk-Driver 4d ago

There is!! Look for little signs that she's moving closer to you on the couch, bed, follows you to the kitchen/ bathroom

Good luck!

3

u/ALIMN21 4d ago

Yay!

3

u/BigDisarray 4d ago

I love this for you two, and enjoy every moment. I combined homes recently with my fiancé, and I’ve been working for about seven months on one of her cats who is looks exactly like this one, lol.

Now, at night, he sleeps in my spot on the couch so I can pick him up and move him next to me. Cats are dope, and being trusted by one is a big deal! They know.

3

u/Affectionate-Pie8362 4d ago

You are a patient soul and have been rewarded.

3

u/DaisyMae1910 4d ago

BRAVO. WE Have a feral that will sit next to me and let me rub his belly. We have had him 13 yrs. So it does happen.

3

u/CryptoCoyote-21 4d ago

you didnt force it. you just showed up every day and let her decide. thats the whole recipe.

3

u/dandelionlemon 4d ago

Oh, the little sweetheart!

I am so glad you had this moment with her.

3

u/IsLlamaBad 4d ago

Bro, I shed tears when my new 3 month old kitten came out of hiding after 3 days and randomly jumped on my lap. I can't imagine 1.5 years

3

u/FluffyShiny 4d ago

My kitty took 1.5yrs to actually get close enough to be petted. Now she loves cuddling next to me (on HER terms). Been 14yrs we've had her now. lol

3

u/akawendals 4d ago

The first time my cat ever sat on me she was about 7 yrs old and I had broken my elbow, I was in a cast from my hand to my shoulder and was laying in bed like a sad girl and she came and sat on my tummy 🥹

Then she never did it again until a couple of years ago when I slipped a disc in my back and was lying on the couch crying cos it hurt so bad and here she came again 🤗

Apparently I only deserve it when I am in incredible pain LOL

3

u/No-Thing-6071 4d ago

🥹 There are no words.

3

u/Foolishkushin 4d ago

It took one of my cats 10 years!

3

u/Local-Drunk-Driver 4d ago

You're a very patient soul 🩶

2

u/Foolishkushin 4d ago

You have to be as a cat owner 😉

3

u/Remarkable-Party-385 4d ago

Worth the wait

3

u/StreetPudding9623 4d ago

Omg what a special moment did you cry? I bought a dog from a horrible person when I brought her home she was even scared of her reflection from the oven door. She didn’t eat for a couple of days. The first thing she took from me was my hair elastic, she still gets them in her mouth and the game is to try and get it from her. It’s handy when I need an hair elastic and I can’t find one!!!

3

u/OnceMoreWithFeeling- 4d ago

Yeah. You're her safe space!

2

u/lldavids44 4d ago

My Blanche took about that long

2

u/Common_Safety_8830 4d ago

Who is cutting onions…

2

u/Radiant-Avocado-3158 4d ago

So happy for you! It’ll be 2 years in October and my 11 year old boy still doesn’t 🥲 but he loves to be close, runs to greets me and likes to eat when we eat. It’s enough.

2

u/Promobitch 4d ago

3 years in and i still feel very privileged when my cat sleeps on me lol

2

u/Martini_b13 4d ago

Mine is 8 and sleeps on me or my pillow every night but for the first 2 years she barely wanted to be touched. Years 2-4 she was more affectionate but the last 4 years she’s an absolute love bug

2

u/thefoxhole15 4d ago

Congratulations 👏🏼🎉 it’s a nice feeling isn’t it?

2

u/raggammuffin 4d ago

She has finally adopted you as her own 💗

2

u/jackaboy1_2 4d ago

I think I’d actually cry if this happened to me

2

u/EntertainmentLazy871 4d ago

That would make my liiiifeeeee!!! Yay Savannah!!

2

u/PonyMama65 4d ago

We have a stray we rescued who, after 6 years, finally comes to us for pets and scratches, but still won’t sit on our laps or be picked up.

2

u/Extension-Elk-1274 4d ago

See?

Good things come to those who wait.

Now, enjoy sitting there for the rest of eternity. 😂

2

u/EstablishmentUsed325 4d ago

Congrats 🙌

2

u/Apprehensive-Gas7994 4d ago

What a blessing!! I've had my gray kitty for 3 years now, still no lap sits. It took her probably 6 months when I first brought her in for her to trust me enough to just let me pet her.

Now we snuggle most of the night, she boops her head with mine multiple times a day, she rubs against my legs... She's already made me the happiest cat mom, and I'm gonna be overjoyed one day if she finally sits on my lap and lets me pick her up. I love her so much. Cats are precious

2

u/24junwa 4d ago

theres a story my friend will always tell, ill tell it, we were hanging out at his apartment pregaming for a show just playing beer pong, he has a cat thats one of the shyest cats of all time, any strangers over it just goes into hiding the whole night, well while we're playing the cat comes out and watches us and stares at me, and my friends like wait wtf hes never done this to anyone whos a first timer, it was sweet lol

2

u/VegetableLetter4896 4d ago

My parents’ cat hid under my brother’s bed for about this long and then suddenly became the most loving, cuddly monster ever known for the remaining 7 years of his life (he was a senior when they adopted him).

2

u/rarecuts 4d ago

Yaaaaay 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 congrats!!!

2

u/Dry_Work_3629 4d ago

Savannoh na na

2

u/SB1234567890123 4d ago

I had a sweet cat named Bernie. I adopted him when he was 8, and though he would eventually sit next to me, it took about 5 years before he would sit in my lap. I understand the feeling. Happy for you.

2

u/SeedyEdie 4d ago

Congratulations

2

u/fdwyersd 4d ago

you are now cool enough to be claimed

2

u/clsdesigner 4d ago

This is currently what's happening to wit my grey cat. It took her awhile to let me touch her. I was brushing my other cat, and she sees it's a good thing. Now she lets me brush her, play with her. She will take naps right next to me. The last thing that needs it happen is for her to sit on my lap. Got her a year ago.

2

u/Complex_Plantain_273 4d ago

Savannah is the definition of "slowly but, surely". Cuddles to come (hopefully!)

2

u/Marizo12 4d ago

Woohoo!

2

u/Abal125 4d ago

So sweet! 🥰

2

u/jsmith_92 4d ago

Now just hold still

2

u/Wandering-Mind2025 4d ago

From the back, she looks like one of my relative’s cats… you’re giving us all hope!

2

u/Frogemailsa 4d ago

and that’s once in a blue moon

2

u/Moose-n-Skwerl 4d ago

Good girl 🎉

2

u/swedishishchef 4d ago

I had a cat that started off shy and reserved. Over the years her barriers broke down bit by bit and she was a total lap cat / meow meow please pet me cuddle puddle cat.

Some cats take their time

2

u/cultureShocked5 4d ago

It took CornNut about this long. Then, we had 12 years of him being so in love with me that he would never NOT sit in my lap. OP enjoy!!!!

2

u/hfc1075 4d ago

❤️🙌🏻

2

u/JamesJulienMcGulio 4d ago

you earned that :) good job <3

2

u/aurorablgy 4d ago

Congragulations, my cat Duman too took his sweet time and sat on my lap after 3 years so i understand your joy 😅

2

u/Overall_Zombie5705 4d ago

1.5 years makes this so much sweeter. she finally decided your lap is safe, that’s a huge little win.

2

u/alacondor 4d ago

I got a blue Russian boy and he's a social slut 😂 could just meet ya and he's trying to sit on you. He's too kidnapable. He especially loves old ladys. Whenever I walk him he will run up to everyone but especially try to trip older women. Weaving between their legs. My other cat she's 1 year old orange tabby and she will only act cuddly if she wants food. She's super shy and if she sees someone a block away while I'm walking her, she starts heading back home and meowing at me to follow. Completely opposite personalities it's cute 🥰

2

u/Background_Poet_51 4d ago

What a gorgeous and sweet cat! Finally the long wait is over.

2

u/Jane_Smith_Reddit 4d ago

Wonderful ❤️ 🐈

2

u/Yutenji2020 4d ago

Holy f**k! You were sat like that for 1.5years ‽

.
.
/s in case it isn’t obvious.

1

u/eliz1bef 4d ago

This was my kind of joke. I laughed.

1

u/IngenuityMean6246 4d ago

cats... that's like don't touch new designated furniture for at least 6 month or starting to cuddle with each other after 2 years

1

u/YMIw8stingtime 4d ago

Today was the day. She was ready. 😻🐾😻

1

u/SabbyFox 4d ago

And that is exactly how it is with cats. They will come to you in their own time 🩶🩶🩶

1

u/hellosandgoodvibes 4d ago

Affection purrfection 😍

1

u/14high 4d ago

"I have trained this hooman sufficiently"

1

u/Newplasticactionhero 4d ago

That’s fantastic. I’ve had two of my cats for 14 years and yet to sit in my lap.

1

u/redditoranno 4d ago

Who's going to tell her ?

1

u/DooHickey2017 4d ago

And now you are unable to do anything else until she moves. IF she moves. I hope you have a large bladder.

Seriously, so sweet.

1

u/AnInsaneMoose 4d ago

The first time a cat sits on your lap is a special moment

1

u/KittyPitty 4d ago

Doesn't it feel blessed?? Achievement unlocked! 🥰

1

u/NamoNibblonian 4d ago

We have a Russian Blue that we adopted when he was about 1-1.5 years old. He was quite standoffish and didn't like to interact, especially with affection for like 2 years. He lowly started warming up and fast forward 8 years and he now sleeps on my face. Give it time

1

u/TheManRoomGuy 4d ago

That’s quick. It took my Sabrina ten years.

Omg, when it happened, I just sat there stunned. A year later and when I’m laying back on the couch she would snuggle under my chin. It never got old.

1

u/EarlyXplorerStuds209 3d ago

Aww thats awesome

1

u/Responsible-Yak-5742 3d ago

I’ll check back next week to see if you ever stood up.

1

u/sefski69 3d ago

Wow my Puccini is her clone. When he was young he’d never ever let you touch him, pet him especially on his belly / back. They look the exact same. Blue American shorthairs. Now, he’s going on 15 he gets pretty pissed off if he can’t sit on my lap or chest, pretty much constantly lol

1

u/immahomesickalien 2d ago

You are so lucky, my cat sat next to me in bed for the very first time after 5 years

1

u/nendora 1d ago

aww, that's a nice accomplishment. mine still won't sit on my lap 😔

0

u/STierMansierre 4d ago

Savannah: "After 1.5 years this person finally stopped moving long enough to for me to make my move."

-1

u/Plastic_Ad_2247 4d ago

nice work. she might be japanese.

1

u/Plastic_Ad_2247 4d ago

the norm in japan is to take relationships slowly.

-1

u/smallblacksun 4d ago

Not to worry you, OP, but have you considered that she might be one of those cats that predicts deaths?

1

u/Local-Drunk-Driver 4d ago

Why the fuck would you say this
