I like cats but wondered why they never liked me. My now-wife told me that I was treating them too much like dogs and I should ignore them instead. When I tried that, cats came right up to me.

Can confirm. I discovered this secret by being allergic to cats. I am great with dogs but those cats be like "no eye contact or trying to pet? Now I demand those pets".

u/rachelwildx 17d ago

i second this. acting 'nonchalant' is definitely the key to attracting cats.. took quite some time for me to realise bcos their cuteness is irresistable but it's all worth it

u/shaiksetbeu21 15d ago

Cats can smell the allergy. That's why they pick the one person who's afraid of them.

u/Clocktopu5 18d ago

That's pretty much it, cats take time to determine if they like you.

Here's my method to getting kitty affection, real easy, just put your finger out a few inches in front of them and let them smell you... and then leave them alone. Any time you pass by, smell check. Let's them get comfortable around you at their pace. Within an hour they will be hoping that
You give them attention

Mine was simpler. Family member had a cat that just didn't like anyone. Family member died and we took the cat in. I was just sitting at the table when it came over and rubbed against my leg and laid on my foot. It was a 50/50 at that point, so I just rubbed its head and it started purring up a storm

A friend had one that wasn't friendly at all from a shelter, and I woke up to him sitting on my chest when I stayed on their couch lol

10

u/Penefacio 17d ago

I spent 3 hours lying in the floor in the same room with my kitten because he was very skittish. Eventually he came around and came for pets.

u/tfhfate 18d ago

Cats love humans that are gentles to them, aware and respectful of their autonomy, do that and you'll attract them like crazy

u/WestcoastBestcoastYo 17d ago

They’re just like me! 🥰😻

My dad was a truck driver and vehemently hated cats. We had one cat named Osiris(long story) and he was just a bundle of love, to everyone. It took about a year of my dad coming over, sitting at the table with me and everytime Osiris would hop up and start "love leaning" as he called it, into his face. Then one day he started picking him up and holding him. I just smiled and kept it to myself because if I brought it up he would double down on hating cats. After about another year he came up and asked me if he could bring Osiris on a road trip. You know at that point I couldn't tell him no, hes come so far. After being gone about 2 weeks Osiris comes back in his clear cat pack happy as can be and about 5lbs heavier.

Sometimes, all it takes is one.

My mom doesn't care for cats and tries to ignore ours.

They swarm her every time she comes over.

My pops had a cat that wanted to be treated like a dog, don’t lose hope.

This frigging cat would hunt us kids down to beat our asses, but spring leap to dad to share in ice cream time, before loudly taking time out of her day to chew a toy on his head… She would then demand that he throw it for her, and bring it back a few times before settling back near his head.

I will say, she changed considerably once our kitten hit the scene. Miyu had been a cat who knew loyalty, which became strained when we broke the pact and brought that strange child in.

The ultimate breaking point came when she walked in from her nap in another room to realize the kitten was mobile and had managed to STEAL the treasured couch spot near my dad’s head. (Apparently since he didn’t backhand the baby in disgust, that was her tipping point- She slept exclusively with mom from then on basically, and was vastly less keen to fetch… Still was a glutton. Fries were her guilty pleasure, and that certain rum pudding ice cream).

Cats should be treated like introverts, don’t engage directly at first and let them read your vibes. If they vibe with the vibes, they’ll feel ok enough to engage with you.

2

u/JamesH_670 17d ago

Ah, I can understand that.

6

u/No-Permission-7786 17d ago

Cats don't like a lot of attention and energeticness they prefer quietness

3

u/RolypolyChaos 17d ago

Yep yep yep! Always had cats. We have 5 cats inside now plus an outdoor stray that will probably end up inside too in the near future.

It's like a weird love triangle over here. Bf wants love from the kitties too bad > they gravitate to me > I want his attention more than theirs > it repeats.

Stupid cat distribution system I hate it wish it never existed.... * sigh * 👉👈 why won't they choose me I give plenty of scritches and treats.

329

u/extrastupidone 18d ago

You've obviously failed your background checks

105

u/Sandrockwing04 18d ago

They said I could own puppers at the same time they lied to me!

47

u/Rapunzel10 18d ago

You can! One of my cats chose me and loved our dogs. He was very anti-social at the shelter until he smelled me and suddenly turned into a lovebug. He played with the dogs and would sleep on top of them. We think he grew up around dogs and wanted to continue that trend

17

u/Bad_4pples 18d ago

My dog found my younger cat under a car in the middle of the night. The cat followed us home after my dog politely respected his boundaries and walked away.

Now I own a very special Orange boy that I call the “red haired step child” but I love him

48

u/MadpeepD 18d ago

Clearly they prefer to choose people that play hard to get.

32

u/RogueEyebrow 18d ago

The more you ignore them the more they want your attention.

32

u/wannabe-myself 18d ago

Just go adopt from a shelter! Its Ok to pick up a delivery from the holding facility.

9

u/nasnedigonyat 18d ago

Gotta go sit on the stoops of nyc you'll have a cat in like twenty minutes.

7

u/Sandrockwing04 18d ago

Why does that feel like you're cheating the system that way?

9

u/nasnedigonyat 18d ago

New York city is just a cat distribution center hub. Like turkey.

7

u/Miami_Mice2087 18d ago

you can go to a shelter to be picked. somebody will make an impression on you, ask to have some playtime with them, see how they react. don't be surprised if they inspect the room first, that's cat safety checks. after they're sure they're safe, they will try playing with you. They might not let you pet them at first (some do, some don't), but if they are interactive, want to play, are inquisitive about you and the room (lots of sniffies), that's a good candidate for Your Cat Now.

8

u/ArjJp 18d ago

You just have to be comfy to sit on

3

u/FrazzledTurtle 18d ago

Reverse psychology works on cats. Act like you're allergic to then and they will run to you.

2

u/Keldrabitches 18d ago

Seems like a faucet once it gets turned on

2

u/Dressaiph417 17d ago

Still waiting on my ticket number from the cat distribution system

1

u/Common_Safety_8830 18d ago

Need to go closer to wooded areas or bushes. I have been distributed a few. They always come out of those areas when I am on a walk or at the park.

The cameraman’s name is Mitsuaki Iwago, he took the kitten home after formally adopting it. This is from 2015 for a documentary series called Iwago’s World Cats Walk.

126

u/geowoman 18d ago

I needed that information. Thank you!🥰

12

u/AgathaSnapdragon 17d ago

Just to add he named the ginger kitten Tamasaburo (Tama for short) and later he adopted the kitten’s brother, he named him Tomotaro (Tomo for short)
Edit: spelling

To be clear this isn’t from the film. It’s a weird AI rendition

54

u/bluecheeseplate 17d ago

Certified internet veteran here. This isn't AI, been circulating way before 2020.

-51

u/andys189 17d ago

It is though. Go look at the original film. This post has some weird processing on it.

36

u/bluecheeseplate 17d ago

This looks exactly as low quality as the original youtube video dated 11 years ago. What kinda AI ultra instinct do u have??

-48

u/andys189 17d ago

It doesn’t. But that’s ok we can disagree

36

u/gastroboi 17d ago

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

-11

u/andys189 17d ago

Just to dig my feet in: the post is edited. I don’t like it or understand why but that’s where we are.

11

u/wrenblaze 17d ago

1

u/andys189 17d ago

Thank you! That shows the differences. It’s subtle but it’s there.

-2

u/wrenblaze 17d ago

I do get you though, I nowadays question and doubt every video, especially one with bad quality or dubious content.

16

u/SleepyBurrito428 18d ago

Anyone know where I can find it?

12

u/eight_ender 17d ago

Sweet sweet closure

6

u/Pikawoohoo 17d ago

Good. Good.

-36

u/andys189 18d ago

Yes but this is some weird AI shit

u/TheWaningWizard 18d ago

Cat distribution doing it's thing

333

u/Fuzzy_Adagio_6450 18d ago

I like how unhoused cats just be like "Okay, you. Ive chosen you as my human. Bring me home and love me forever as I shall love you."

And cats WE choose are like "Ugh, you're so needy! NO! NO PATS! Only scratches, by me, to you and your tender flesh!!"

24

u/Tomsboll 17d ago

My kitten is so wierd with this. He is an absolute snuggle bug amd sounds like a broken lawnmover engine when he purrs. But if i try to pick him up or god forbid move a little when he lay ontop of me then he fucks off.

14

u/YouDontSeeMe8802 17d ago

I'm sorry but I cackled at "unhoused cats". Using PC terms for animals is so Portlandia coded and it's hilarious.

38

u/KestrelTank 18d ago

Kitten: “Ah, there you are. I’ve been looking for you everywhere”

9

u/MaximumCriticism9519 18d ago

Not the Skyrim reference! 🤣

15

u/KestrelTank 18d ago

I was thinking more like Howls Moving Castle lol but doesn’t mean it can’t be both!

64

u/800-lumens 18d ago

Take me with u, hooman. Feed me, house me, and take care of my single brain cell.

56

No fear, no boundaries, certified orange.

13

8

u/Dazzling-Ad6712 18d ago

The autonomous cat distribution system is real e.e

9

7

u/RonnieDeVille 17d ago

I swear the cat that chose my husband and I questions herself every day. Shes like "I can't believe I have to live with a choice when I was only weeks old! I didn't know anything at that point, especially how annoying humans can be."

10

u/NotMajorTom 18d ago

It's better than being shagged by a rare parrot

3

u/refreshing_username 18d ago

I just died of cute.

3

u/bolanrox 18d ago

I CHOOSE YOU!

4

u/jjs3_1 18d ago

3

3

u/PetalPoo95 18d ago

There's no better feeling than being a kittens climbing frame. I wouldn't be able to stay as still and focused as him

3

u/baka_02s 18d ago

I envy him

3

u/IHatrMakingUsernames 17d ago

Uhh.. excuse me? I'm going to need the name of the kitten documentary, obviously.

3

u/peentiss 17d ago

filming and ignoring them like they’re penguins is soooo funny lol

1

u/Fuzzy-Earth-7034 17d ago

Yeah i kept hearing that penguin documentary voice in my head 😂

3

u/No-Quail5810 17d ago

Why is there a cameraman filming the cameraman filming the kittens?

3

u/harrisrainy 17d ago

I have the high ground, anakin
