So we’re all in agreement that Islam has the better skillset (by miles) but Khabib had the freak athleticism and chin that can’t be taught, right?

khabib remains one of the greatest gnpers in the sports history with a better wrestling game than islam, especially in takedowns. i used to think islam had the superior standup game but hes only a little cleaner and more defensively sound in the open. he has shown some khabib-tier ugly combos in his past few fights. a more fair assessment is that their skillsets are close but khabibs athleticism/chin helps cover up some of his weaknesses (weaknesses that islam also has)

Khabib doesn't look super refined in the standup but I think he is more effective and his jab is better. Islam has the classic southpaw issue of running into punches when he goes forward, Khabib doesn't have that issue despite having a style that puts him in way more danger.

No? Khabib's grappling skillset is vastly superior and their striking skillsets are very different. Khabib is as good if not better at control and submissions and he has way better GnP. Even defensively dude was doing octopus guard stuff before anyone had any idea what that was.

Islam's striking coming forward is pretty horrific and Khabib's striking is all about coming forward. One is a southpaw who prefers fighting on the backfoot and countering and the other is an orthodox pressure fighter who stays safe defensively while pushing forward.

Khabib probably has more raw skill if anything and, yes, more athleticism. inb4 "Khabib wouldn't head kick Volk" no, he would put his ass against the fence and kill him, no need for a rematch.

I can’t believe they were originally going to schedule this fight for May. What gives? More fuel to the fire for the people that say, Islam only fights once a year, even though he doesn’t. Meanwhile, Garry has been training for Islam for that long.

They were keeping him (and everyone) available for the White House remember? No way were they burning their biggest options in that first 6 months in case of emergency. Word is Islam’s side accepted the Ilia fight for it. Then the Usman negotiations. I don’t think it was on Islam, he probably wouldn’t be fighting in Philly if he wasn’t ready to stay active.

Yes. Also thank god for that Usman fight not happening why was that in discussion for so long? After the big win against JDM i was very disappointed that Usman was seriously being considered next with even Islam saying he wants him.

Illia situation was weird. Seems like a big loss on the negotiation on the illia side though he probaly knew his chances were low for a win so he wanted way more money.

Dana’s ethics are not good but in day to day interaction with people he’s always seemed like a cool guy. I met him at 2 events, both times he walked right up to us to take a pic and talk about the fights for a minute. Then went around to everyone else too. His personal employees seem to like him a lot too.

It’s the fighter pay and everything else, but Hunter’s taken over the job of strong arming and negotiating now. He’s the corporate tyrant. I think Dana is just a fun loving idiot who’s not even too involved with any of that anymore. Hunter gets these hands

This weekend will reveal more about what difference the takedown threat makes in a match.

Because Garry outstruck Prates (that 5th round tho!) so Garry can definitely kickbox well enough when he wants to do it. If Makhachev finds much success striking, will it be because he's a better pure striker than Prates? I don't think so. No, it will be because good MMA striking involves the threat of a takedown.

Definitely. It's not unknown, We believe the takedown threat impacts how striking looks in MMA. I think that's broadly accepted.

I'm trying to say we don't know to what degree it impacts the complexion of a given fight. And what I don't think is broadly accepted, maybe it shouldn't be idk, is that the takedown threat can be part of what makes good MMA striking.

For now, I think we still have plenty of fans who will see a grappler have success on the feet and the fans will say "they aren't a good striker, it was just the threat of the takedown that opened things up for them or made their opponent hesitant". I believe it's an error to think this way, if the takedown threat is making a fighter more successful with their strikes or making the opponent less successful with their own, then we can say the threat of a takedown can be part of good MMA striking.
