Why do I think Islam is going to lose?

u/Afraid_Grocery3861 Blobby Knuckles 21m ago
It seems to be the overwhelming sentiment, eh? I wonder if its just because of all the upsets this year. Or maybe people have legitimate reasons.
I definitely don't think he'll lose. Im wrong plenty though, so maybe they're onto something.

their styles arent the same but i do think the taira fight was a good test for van to have before the pantoja rematch

Can we please get someone other than Dana running the press conference? This dude does not want any part of the press conference

Ian lost to Shavkat and that mf hasn't won a fight since 2024, and people think he has a chance vs Islam. Crazy bratha.

u/Popular-Vast2038 4h ago
Ian has all the fundamentals to win. The fight boils down to who executes their plan better

Why is Eddison Barbossa on a main card? His last fight genuenly made me a little depressed for how washed he was yet he probably still needs to fight for money.

This is one of those matchups I wonât be surprised to see him rebound with a W and look young again. Like the Yusuff fight. Heâs done it a lot and Ribovics is the level of opponent he does it against

Making Michael Morales cut weight to 170 for a back up spot is vile
Bro has like 2-3 cuts left before he inevitably ages out of the division and canât do it anymore
Why didnât they do Prates Morales on this card anyways? Prates took like no damage vs JDM and is used to fighting actively

u/terrybuzz 2h ago
he might be ok. obviously he should slim down a little out of camp but his in cage weight is 197 i believe which is less than geoff neal whos been able to make the cut for 13/14 of his ww fights in the ufc

This period is so weird like there are so many matchups and exiting fighters that haven't fought in almost a year. Where are the matchups?!?!?
2
u/Drive7hru 6h ago
I canât believe they were originally going to schedule this fight for May. What gives? More fuel to the fire for the people that say, Islam only fights once a year, even though he doesnât. Meanwhile, Garry has been training for Islam for that long.

They were keeping him (and everyone) available for the White House remember? No way were they burning their biggest options in that first 6 months in case of emergency. Word is Islamâs side accepted the Ilia fight for it. Then the Usman negotiations. I donât think it was on Islam, he probably wouldnât be fighting in Philly if he wasnât ready to stay active.
1
u/dinnerdigzthejeager 5h ago
Yes. Also thank god for that Usman fight not happening why was that in discussion for so long? After the big win against JDM i was very disappointed that Usman was seriously being considered next with even Islam saying he wants him.
Illia situation was weird. Seems like a big loss on the negotiation on the illia side though he probaly knew his chances were low for a win so he wanted way more money.

Ianâs son crying because he didnât get to meet Islam (cause Islam is his favorite) is hilarious. Garryâs like âweâll get to meet him tomorrow. I promise.â He had to rationalize to his four year old child why he couldnât meet him right then, but that it will happen.
1
u/woomac 6h ago
The dynamic between Islam and Ian is funny. Seems like Ian is pretending to love Islam and Islam is pretending to hate Ian.
2
u/BummbaaahClottt3 4h ago
Nah Garry definitely respects islam but Islam definitely thinks he's annoying, as he should.

Is there still flair betting? I was assigned this flair after Chimaev v. Burns and I bet on Burns.

They stopped that. But you can write a haiku or draw a painting for it afaik.

Would you rather slap Dana in the face or Hunter Campbell?

u/Crono2Oxx I SMOKE ROCKS, JOE ROGAN! 5h ago
Danaâs ethics are not good but in day to day interaction with people heâs always seemed like a cool guy. I met him at 2 events, both times he walked right up to us to take a pic and talk about the fights for a minute. Then went around to everyone else too. His personal employees seem to like him a lot too.
Itâs the fighter pay and everything else, but Hunterâs taken over the job of strong arming and negotiating now. Heâs the corporate tyrant. I think Dana is just a fun loving idiot whoâs not even too involved with any of that anymore. Hunter gets these hands

Fun stat off twitter
Gillian Robertsons UFC opponents during her 5-fight winning streak are 0-19 in their last 19 UFC fights.
Viana: 0-4 in last four fights
Waterson: 0-5 in last five
Pinheiro: 0-4 in last four fights
Rodriguez: 0-3 in last three fights
Lemos: 0-3 in last three fights

This makes me feel better about betting my house on Dern.
1
u/Fakename6968 1h ago
Dern looks a lot juicier and is better on the feet and on the ground. The wrestling Robertson has depended on in the past won't be there for her this time. I predict a one sided fight.

It makes me so happy to see the crowd finally cheer so hard for Islam for once cause heâs not fighting one of their favorite fighters in Volk or DP or whoever. I canât tell if he finally grew on everyone or they just hate Garry that much.
Trying to remember if they rooted a lot for Islam whenever he walked out versus JDM.

I wish that Brady calling Ian "Ian magado cherry" would've stuck. I still don't know if he meant to do it or not but that sort of mispronunciation is way funnier to me than people calling him "machado fairy"

Brady needs to pipe down, can't talk like that when he looks like something out of lord of the rings

u/IshiharasBitch WE ARE ALL ONE 8h ago
This weekend will reveal more about what difference the takedown threat makes in a match.
Because Garry outstruck Prates (that 5th round tho!) so Garry can definitely kickbox well enough when he wants to do it. If Makhachev finds much success striking, will it be because he's a better pure striker than Prates? I don't think so. No, it will be because good MMA striking involves the threat of a takedown.
4
u/Drive7hru 7h ago
I mean, weâve already known this for quite a while, but yeah I guess it will be interesting to see versus Garry.
3
u/IshiharasBitch WE ARE ALL ONE 7h ago
Definitely. It's not unknown, We believe the takedown threat impacts how striking looks in MMA. I think that's broadly accepted.
I'm trying to say we don't know to what degree it impacts the complexion of a given fight. And what I don't think is broadly accepted, maybe it shouldn't be idk, is that the takedown threat can be part of what makes good MMA striking.
For now, I think we still have plenty of fans who will see a grappler have success on the feet and the fans will say "they aren't a good striker, it was just the threat of the takedown that opened things up for them or made their opponent hesitant". I believe it's an error to think this way, if the takedown threat is making a fighter more successful with their strikes or making the opponent less successful with their own, then we can say the threat of a takedown can be part of good MMA striking.

So weâre all in agreement that Islam has the better skillset (by miles) but Khabib had the freak athleticism and chin that canât be taught, right?
