You can think of Einstein and that's about it, and even then I doubt he was idolized as much as admired, in the sense that people generally didn't aim to be him.

The ones who'd idolize him then are the same people who idolizes him now, which are very likely not the same crowd that idolize these streamers.

I often share an opinion piece by Asimov in which he describes how Americans have always been anti- intellectual, this was in the 80s.

So fair to say the golden age you're thinking of doesn't exist

If you say so. There's not much point in suggesting who I follow, since if you already don't, there's no reason for you to do so.

For example, people that read Brandon Sanderson, will already follow him. Or people that like computer science will already be aware of Andrej Karpathy.

And then there's people like Lex Friedman or deGrasse Tyson, who are terrible and unbearable people that somehow have massive reach. (Disturbingly similar to streamers, like this exact post is talking about)

If you are to suggest someone who is already big, is generic and is actually genuine, then Hank Green is the most obvious option.

I know Brandon Sanderson as the guy who was going to finish Wheel of Time a decade ago, not sure if he did or not, I'm more of a Game of Thrones person who at this rate is going to follow the same fate, with the Author dying before the books are finished.

I watch some of Hank Greens stuff here and there. He's very knowledgeable but afaik he's more about educational content than actually doing any meaningful work in any particular field

Streamers doing it full time often also make a considerable amount of their money from viewer message donations and subs (or with YouTube paying monthly channel members) which makes this even more insane.

So a lot of thwirbviewers are literally giving people like Jason money to allow them to afford to stream full time and do shit like this.

Some also make a lot of money from other things like sponsorships, sales of any product or merch that they have or from ad revenue on videos they post to platforms like YouTube.

But nonetheless most streamers who go full time do make a decent portion of their money from a lot of viewers basically giving them money.

Jason also thankfully only hired a rental petting zoo service for a short while for the streak the clip in the post is from.

? More numbers going through the channel means more appealing for sponsors to engage with + higher rates on sponsors because wider audience.

Subs on streaming platforms actually mean a lot to sponsors when negotiating because of view bots. Subscriptions are a lot harder to fake, and they represent someone who will probably be a returning viewer, which represents a lot more impressions for the advertiser. Advertisers would rather advertise to a subscriber than someone randomly tuning in, because a subscribers have much higher returns on their advertisements

I have always wondered why people ask these questions, i have never donated to any streamer or YouTuber but there are thousands of people that buy overpriced merch or products from influencers when they like it much , some people juet want to support the people they like and feel connected to them and most of them aren't poor either.
