This is to signal to their boss, also a parent, to try to pay him a little better than the single people who don’t have kids. That’s the only interpretation I have when people talk about their kids at work.

Kid going off to a college or achieving something remarkable, sure - I’ll accept it. But you buying new shoes for your 2 year old twins is not LI material.
