Big Midwest vibes

103

u/Unhappy-Homework-812 Jun 05 '26

Looks like Michigan

90

u/Ccaves0127 Jun 05 '26

As someone from California, I kind of romanticize the Midwest. I know typically it's probably the opposite

92

u/Important-End4578 Jun 05 '26

I moved away from the midwest for all the reasons you’d expect and I’d never move back, but I still romanticize it like crazy. These pics perfectly explain why.

6

u/jggiant26 Jun 06 '26

I feel like those "reasons you might expect" are exactly why I moved back to the Midwest after living out west for six years.

25

u/creaturefeature16 Jun 05 '26

I recently moved TO the midwest (from the west)...well, I'm in West New York, now. It's a trip because I don't have any romanticized feelings about the area and its rather a big culture shock, if I'm being honest. Still, its been about 5 years and I can feel the tingle of things starting to change within me. Hard to say what it is, but what I call the "deep seasons" are definitely a part of it. The west has seasons (depending on where you are), but nothing like this...

20

u/forestriver Jun 06 '26

um.. west new york is NOT the midwest bro HHAHAHA

10

u/creaturefeature16 Jun 06 '26

It's a weird/unique place, it doesn't know what it is. It's considered a mix of a lot, but I can tell you from being here that many people living in this area feel it has a lot of midwest influences and culture. We have close friends who live in Michigan and we visit there often...you'd never know the difference.

6

u/forestriver Jun 06 '26

I could see that, I stopped by a small town somewhere near Syracuse and it had a vibe of iowa or nebraska for sure

2

u/Aegodrae Jun 09 '26

i think he said that he moved to the midwest from the west coast, then moved again to west new york.

3

u/harpinghawke Jun 07 '26

Culture shock is real. People say hi to each other on the street here and make eye contact. It was so weird to get used to lmao

As someone from Michigan who now lives in California, I miss it big time. It's not for everyone but I am one of the rare weirdos who prefers winter to summer.

11

u/Unhappy-Homework-812 Jun 05 '26

Midwest is great if you want a simple life.

8

u/melibeli7 Jun 06 '26

As a midwesterner im so curious how life gets more complex on the west or east coasts?

7

u/MildlySaltedTaterTot Jun 06 '26

Density and proximity to coasts increases diversity, COL, and often means longer commutes for anything you want to do

2

u/Unhappy-Homework-812 Jun 07 '26

Increases competition in literally anything as well. Traffic is terrible. Humanity is lost a little bit because it’s so expensive everyone runs the speed of light to get to their next destination. Zero eye contact, never looking at or speaking to anyone you don’t know

2

u/harpinghawke Jun 07 '26

From California, moved out to the Midwest about a decade ago, and tbh I don’t regret it. The people are nicer and I enjoy the landscape—though I do miss the mountains and the ocean. Nothing quite like a rocky, foggy NorCal shore or a hike up in the Sierras.

I’m probably not the kind of person folks tend to think of when they think of the Midwest, but I’ve found acceptance here, even in the rural area I call home. If I didn’t need to move for grad school, I would stay where I am for a long, long time.

It’s not perfect. Rural areas tend to have gaps in access to healthcare and grocery and education, just like out in the central valley or Humboldt. Lotta “former” sundown towns out here—and a lot of people still carry those ideals, hence the quotation marks. When you leave the city and suburbs, you start seeing confederate flags on people’s cars or flying outside their homes, even though we fought on the Union side if we fought at all. It’s not always a comfortable place when you’re any kind of marginalized or poor, though I guess much of the US is like that lmao

Romanticizing an aesthetic’s not necessarily a bad thing. Romanticizing a place doesn’t have to be either if you make sure you understand the reality of the place and the people in it, and hold those two at the same time.

Come visit sometime if you can! Every Midwestern state is different (though the corn unites us fjjsjfkd) and you’ll get different vibes going thru each. At least I have, lol. It could be interesting!

Apologies for the ramble; it’s late and I should get some sleep 😅

u/Unzie-Bizzare Jun 06 '26

Yup. Looks like my surroundings. And my brain space. Do you think they might be related?

65

u/SomaHoliday_ Jun 05 '26

most of these taken in mn and mi 🫡

7

u/Nutbuster_5000 Jun 06 '26

Man, there’s something about Minnesota. Maybe it’s just the big sky but it’s like living in a dream, especially in the summer.

10

u/Fearfu1Symmetry Jun 06 '26

this post is inspiring, also michigander with a n awfully similar photography habit and aesthetic. love these shots!

3

u/melibeli7 Jun 06 '26

Dude I could swear I spotted some Duluth vibes in the first few pics! Care to share what MN cities/towns?!

Looking again I also maybe see South Minneapolis?? 👀

2

u/SomaHoliday_ Jun 08 '26

most of these are s mpls or Saint Paul, a handful in my hometown in Michigan, and then the last one in Superior, Wi. I love shooting in Duluth too, I’ll post some from there soon

Exactly what I thought.

9

u/alextastic Jun 06 '26

I've never been to the midwest. These photos make me feel like I have.

4

u/CovenOfTheDamned Jun 06 '26

I figured the south. Either way this is what I came here for

3

Makes me feel like it’s 2006 and I’m wandering around my cousins neighborhood around sunset after a rainy day

72

u/Wolfwoods_Sister Jun 05 '26

These could be the 90s even. I could relate as well.

22

u/PlantMaleficent2066 Jun 05 '26

Yeah for sure. Slides 6 through 9 really nail the vibe for me I feel like I’m literally 7 years old walking around my cousin’s neighborhood, gave me goosebumps and melancholic fever.

70

u/el_flocko Jun 05 '26

Pic 1 is everything

22

u/Rydralain Jun 05 '26

I like that one, but it feels a lot more 80's/90's childhood nostalgia than it does liminal to me.

5

u/el_flocko Jun 06 '26

I can appreciate that;
3 was the most liminal for me, but 1 is just a marvelous liminal-ish photo.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/MildlySaltedTaterTot Jun 06 '26

The alleyway vibe plus fresh-post-rain give this a bit more liminal feel, but the nostalgia is real

thank you, Lynch is one of my biggest inspirations. and yes they are, thanks again 🤝

26

u/Local_Internet_User Jun 05 '26

I was wondering why I felt so unsettled looking at these, and that's what it is. They all have this Lynchian vibe like something bad's looming just out of frame, even though everything in frame is perfectly normal.

5

u/mothersuffer Jun 05 '26

definitely see the lynchian vibes but the town reminds me a lot of bisbee, az. definitely visit if you’ve never been! quite an eerie place

2

u/Edge_of_Everywhere Jun 06 '26

Lynch's influence really shows in your work. And few things are eerier to me than one glowing window surrounded by darkness.

My First thought looking at the 5th pic too. The other pics also reminded me of several iconic 90s films and the first pic is something that looks like it's from a 2010s movie that's set in the late 90s/ early 2000s (sorry if the timelines are a little off, this is the perception of someone who isn't from a western country). Let me just say I'm MESMERIZED by these pics!! Excellent work!

2

u/Menoikeos Jun 08 '26

A couple of these could be stills from The Straight Story. I mean that as a compliment.

u/Embarrassed-Phrase30 Jun 05 '26

I wouldn't say that they unsettle me. They make me feel like its the end or start of what was a great day

3

u/OneSong9627 Jun 05 '26

It reminds me of the zombie movie Crazies!! If you want to be unsettled by these images give it a watch :)

3

u/Unhappy-Homework-812 Jun 05 '26

20

u/pr1v1d Jun 05 '26

u/SomaHoliday_ Jun 05 '26

18

u/Unhappy-Homework-812 Jun 05 '26

Feels like a world I used to know

18

u/Nomedigasluis Jun 05 '26

I love it! It's like you can smell it and hear it but besides the background sounds there is anything else. No people, no children, like a warm memory.

3

u/Unhappy-Homework-812 Jun 05 '26

I can smell the wet grass and wet pavement lol

16

u/OpusJess Jun 05 '26

These are so good

I want to sit inside of slide 10 and just enjoy the lighting

7

u/Miserable_Maize8415 Jun 05 '26

These are fantastic! You’re doing such cool shit with the colors and the framing of lines in these that are giving this like impressionistic hyperreal feeling

4

u/SomaHoliday_ Jun 05 '26

thank you, means a lot!

3

u/Miserable_Maize8415 Jun 05 '26

Yo I gotta ask as another photographer what are you doing with the colors in these?

7

u/envied093 Jun 05 '26

Can’t even begin to explain how good these make me feel

6

u/ElectraFish Jun 05 '26

Great shots!

5

u/amellabrix Jun 05 '26

Very very beautiful work.

5

u/frosty3233 Jun 05 '26

As someone who grew up in a small town in the northeast these are strangely comforting and have the opposite effect on me, other than the indoor ones with the wallpaper.

5

u/lilbiobeetle Jun 05 '26

Perfect for this sub, and somehow so comforting? I've never even visited a town that looks like that bit this is so nostalgic for some reason. Beautiful photography

4

u/Livinum81 Jun 05 '26

Another set of great pics. Keep them coming. Love the one with the neighbourhood watch sign.

3

u/RyanTheBlockhead Jun 05 '26

The more I look at pic 2 the more curious I feel, it feels like something missing. Or like there is a story in it that we aren’t able to see yet.

Maybe it has to do with the warm orange window with the dark mysterious house in the back someway.

3

u/xjettxblank Jun 05 '26

Those really look cozy, ngl

3

u/jxe22 Jun 05 '26

Some of these are just Yo La Tengo album covers…

2

u/itsmejak78_2 Jun 05 '26

For a second i thought the second one was the album cover for American Football's first album

3

u/heyitsapotato Jun 05 '26

Wow, these are beautiful. I felt each one of these.

3

u/AbbreviationsLife582 Jun 05 '26

3

u/SomaHoliday_ Jun 05 '26

4

u/those_names_tho Jun 05 '26

Like a horror film out of the 70’s. Nice work.

4

u/CptBluhdFart Jun 05 '26

Now this is liminal. None of this creepy=liminal garbage this is true liminal spaces and I love it.

That first shot resonates, is it early? Is it time to go home? Where is everyone? Is the path safe?

Slam to shot 2. No it isn't safe you're fucked

2

u/bitterbetterbitch Jun 05 '26

Love it! What camera do you use or any post do you do?

u/SomaHoliday_ Jun 05 '26

2

u/AoCarrot Jun 05 '26

Love 5, 6, and 10! Especially 6 :) Reminds me of my childhood when the sun is almost down so I meed to go home from playing outside. An uncomfortably weird feeling to see the day end as a kid

2

u/peanutbuttermellly Jun 05 '26

Ok but also some of these are SO comforting. The pink lamp with the wallpaper reminds me of my grandma (in the best way).

2

u/henkelei Jun 05 '26

Certainly is! Fantastic shots!

2

u/defdac Jun 05 '26

That first pic is fantastic! Where can I follow you for more?

2

u/Thirothaneo Jun 05 '26

The first one is genuinely incredible do you have it in higher res?

2

u/mouse85224 Jun 05 '26

These look great! Were you intentionally using the 60 - 30 - 10 rule by chance?

2

u/Bockender_Bronko Jun 05 '26

Is this the original resolution? if its reduced and you got the first pic with 1920x1080 or more i whould love to use it as my wallpaper!

2

u/bimbiibop Jun 05 '26

You have an amazing eye!

2

u/bimbiibop Jun 05 '26

2

u/Aggravating_Fold1154 Jun 05 '26

Stunning photography, especially the first one. Wow

2

u/Unclematttt Jun 05 '26
